beside和besides

besides：

这个词出现在12世纪，常见于14世纪后，来自beside（在……旁边）加上副词后缀-s。它曾经和beside有相同的所有意义，但现在只限于表示“除了，另外”的副词意义。口语中的缩写'sides出现在16世纪。

beside：

这个词来自12世纪的英语，意思是“在……旁边”，来自古英语be sidan，“在……旁边”，由be-和sidan组成，sidan是side（边，侧）的属格。

在12世纪时，beside已经作为一个词，既可以作为副词，也可以作为介词。

中古英语时期，beside还有一个意思是“在外面”，这个意思保留在beside oneself这个短语中，意思是“发狂，失去理智”。

beside有和什么相比的含义，是因为它可以表示两个事物或人物的相对位置或状态。例如：

- He sat beside her and held her hand. 他坐在她旁边，握着她的手。

- Beside him, I feel like a fool. 和他相比，我觉得自己像个傻瓜。

- That's beside the point. 那和要点无关。
