Holding the sword

握剑

The saber is to be held in a “locked key” fashion , by inserting the index finger in that hollow which is found in its cross(192),so that the grip is fast and secure , able to resist violent action , and one doesn’t lose the grip on it , which could easily happen , if one held it in another way , or tried to play with it like he was using a rapier . Antoinio Marcelli

(Antoinio Marcelli)

This finger aids the thumb in all its workings ; it also leads all the cuts , and as such is called the leading finger ; and because quite often it is put into the ring or loop , we can also call it the ring finger . Michal Starzewski

这根手指帮助拇指完成所有的工作;它也引导所有的切割,因此被称为leading finger(即食指,译者注);因为它经常被放入环或环中,我们也可以称之为ring finger(这个词的意思是无名指,但在此处仍然指食指,译者注)。 (Michal Starzewski)

Marcelli refers to the most secure grip of the saber as the Locked-Key grip , and correlates with Starzewski’s advice . In this grip , the hand makes a solid fist around the hilt ,while the thumb is placed through a thumb-ring(if present) , or pressed tightly against the knuckles of the index finger(193) . Both Starzewski and Marcelli make reference to a loop , possibly a leather loop , for the index finger . When moving the sword , the thumb and index finger help to direct it . When actually making a cut , the middle , ring , and pinky fingers can tighten upon the hilt to deliver more strength into the attack .

192 Maybe it’s a finger ring in this case , this would suggest an Italian Storta is the weapon Marcelli writes about . –Translator’s note-

193 Starzewski refers to the index finger as the “ ring finger “

Heussler depicts the occasional use of a much looser grip , where the thumb and index finger are pinching the hilt and the last three fingers are loose . This can gain range in an attack , but should be used sparingly because it is not a secure way to grip the sword and is susceptible to beats .

The left hand , or off-hand as it is also called , can be placed on the hip , open along the back , tucked in belt by the thumb near the stomach , or limp and near the chest . The left hand can be used to come to grips with an opponent , but otherwise should stay out of the fight so as not to be struck incidentally(194).

194 Rapier masters such as Fabris described the use of the left hand . However , with a saber , any attempt to grab a moving blade would likely result in missing fingers . Grabs should be to the opponent’s arm or wrist .
