I’m interested in China because it seems to me to be a country of great diversity, in terms of people, way of life, geography, festivals, etc.
I lived in Shanghai, China for six months. I have a really great experience. There are so many things I like about Chinese culture.
1. Kind and friendly people

The Chinese welcome foreigners coming to China to live and do trade and business. They are friendly and accommodating to foreigners. They are not aggressive to others because, in Chinese philosophy, they believe 和为贵. That is peace and harmony are the best. I have always found everyone to be very helpful and polite. Quite a contrast to my own country. They treat all tourists like guests.

Daniel Lee
, It is just a matter of time
I like the interaction between people. Not actually the Chinese people but the interaction. People are so so complicated in China which makes socialising really really challenging and fun at the same time.
There would be a lot of time you have to ask others for help if you live and work in China. They might be your friends, friends’ friends, or even complete strangers that you have never met before. They might be easygoing, unpredictable or hard to approach. You might have to eat a lot of business meals or even get drunk if necessary. But you will learn how to praise others without sounding like bootlicking, how to Manage long term relationship with certain critical personnel you might need help from in the future, how to ask for help without annoying them and most importantly, how to sacrifice now for a better good in the long run. You will learn how to listen without looking like you are not paying attention, how to talk so that you can display your “assets” which others can make use of (no one will help you without getting something out of you) without sounding like you are showing off or exchanging something with them (even if it is).
If you master these technics, you will be someone like my mum who is only a MIDDLE SCHOOL GRADUATE but with over 2500 people in her contact list including some really impactful managers/doctors/physicians in top hospitals in Guangzhou and Shenzhen. She single-handedly opened a health examination centre earlier this year in Shenzhen CBD with a little less than 2000 square meters. And you will get to accomplish a lot of things with the help of others even if they look unachievable even unlawful.
Nothing is impossible. This is why I like China.

Originally Answered: What intrigues you the most about China?
This is a hard question to answer, because there is so much intriguing about China.
But I guess it all comes back to what interested me in China in the first place: the writing. In junior high school in California, I saw Chinese writing for the first time, and was fascinated: you mean people can actually read this? and write it? Thus began a long journey that has continued for 50 years now.

Writing, especially traditional characters, is aesthetically beautiful, has endless variation, and has deep meaning that is often not apparent on the surface. Lest I write a book to answer, let me confine myself to two examples: 黑 and 夢, for no more reason than that these are the first two that popped into mind.
黑 means black, but it’s hard to see that it was originally a picture of a criminal whose face was tattooed black to shame him and warn others. In the original, you can see 大, usually means big, but is a pictograph of a person. You see the tattoos on the face; the other marks around him may be emphasis, or just for design.
夢 means dream. This character has changed quite a bit, but you can still see the 目/eye, sideways, and the ㄇ that was originally a 人 person, the dreamer. The original had 爿 on the left, half of 木, wood, being the bed on which the person was dreaming. The person is wide-eyed, holding up a hand in surprise. In the modern form, the 爿 has been replaced with 夕 moon, night, because people usually dream at night.

I could go on and on, but you get the idea.

Xane Feng
Honestly that looks more like a pillow than being wide eyed.

Yugan Talovich

Haha, I had never looked at it that way. But that is how 目/eye was written; our modern version is turned 90 degrees.

The most interesting thing about China is that the real China, save for “made-in-China” products, is largely invisible to people in the West/US. As a matter of fact, Western politicians, journalists, and intellectuals have, quite successfully, fabricated a demonized China by reiterating and recycling the same lies about China on a daily basis. Of course, behind their lies are some stereotypical misconceptions about China, such as the “Yellow Peril”, “Oriental Despotism”, “communism”, “authoritarianism”, “dictatorship”, etc.
TRuth is, China today is one of the most progressive countries in the world. China’s extraordinary development is good for China and good for the rest of the world.
The Sinophobia that is prent in the West/US is a cultural disease named Western-centrism and also a significant symptom of the decline of Western civilization.
Chinese civilization has been around for thousands of years. China counts for nearly 1/5 of humanity. Demonizing China makes no sense. Why can't the West/US just honestly face the real China?

Annie Ruth Harrison
Yes!! A thousand times yes!
America can’t face China as she is because the politicians don’t want to admit that China has surpassed us on the world stage. They don’t want to easily accept defeat. Like Donald Trump hiding and not wanting to concede the election, that spirit is alive in our government. Sooner or later though, everyone has to face TRuth.

David Barry
Its surprising how babyish some world leaders can be.

David Barry
Thats the TRuth and known to those who have lived there.

I agree, with you, I think they are jealous of China’s huge achievement and technology advancement, I have seen with my own eyes how China has pulled millions out of poverty, and how fast China has developed, I have seen what the government are doing for the people, each day better and nicer than the day before, where the West in going backwards, and that hurts their pride to see China moving so fast ahead of the west.

Vivianne Chin
Why can't the West/US just honestly face the real China?
they have a reputation to keep, and most of them are fighting against their own peers not to run the country, but to run over the country. It is the fight to keep power the one that drains most energy and resource. So now they have to make a common enemy to reduce the growing burden.
many people at that level of pyramid do that. The only difference is the subject they choose to be made as common enemy and the timing of the choice. China have a habit of seeing internal threats bigger than external ones, USA the opposite and what we are witnessing now is the result of the two countries’ own sextion, out of their very own thinking habit.

The contrast of culture- Eastern to Western, behind the historical development. The richness & mystical history is fascinating to understand the modernisation of China, as to how it eventually opens its door to the West and assumes it’s present role as a global citizen. It’s remarkable to see the miraculous transition of a poor impoverished closed society to a well to do modern society, particularly its transformation to a market economy with capitalist character, under a socialist frxwork.
China urban areas are well developed & its many modern cities are impressive with their utilities & infrastructure that could rival if not surpass many other global cities. It’s overall technological advancement is remarkable in a socialist consumer society where tourists can enjoy paradise shopping and travel around safely.
Apart from the impressive built up environment, tourists can easily enjoy many beauties of its natural environments in its rural areas to experience this vast ancient land, just like America.

This is what I like about China
- The fact that there are no communal riots despite so many religions and ethnicities (I come from India and while we have had large scale communal riots resulting in mass killings since the 1900s - they have increased since 1984)
- The fact that it is more of a meritocracy than most other countries
- The fact that nearly everyone is keen on working hard and making a better life for themselves
- The fact that the government seems to help people genuinely (unlike India and UK - two countries where I have spent a large part of my life)
- The fact that it is safe
PS: I am from India and have lived in UK (and a few other countries) - this has formed my above answer and the impressions / comparisons that have resulted in the above .

, No one is promised tomorrow. TODAY is the day.
Thanks for the A2A!
I'm most interested in China to travel across the country, view the remarkable geography and architecture and meet and learn from the diverse peoples.
Mainland Chinese people have a skewed idea of what America is like. I am quite certain that my idea of what China is like is equally skewed.
Only by traveling, seeing with my own eyes and meeting and talking with people can I discover what a huge, diverse nation like China is really about.

, I've been living in China for ten years.
large variety of food
super cheap public transportation
pace of change is extremely quick
big city living and vibe
Chinese people’s entrepreneurial spirit
the police’s laid-back attitude
ubiquity of mobile payments
night owls (everyone is up quite late)
anything can be delivered to your home/office (and extremely quickly)
China’s lack of political correctness (refreshing!)

I'm interested in local cultural practices, businesses, and the confines of the Chinese geography.
I'm sort of interested in the language but have had to limit myself to common expressions and simple roots.
I'm interested in how Chinese have fun, plan, work, and what they are most interested in.
I'm interested in the Chinese Space Program and hope they will continue to share what they learn.

I have never been to China but would love to go. My mother was fascinated with China, learned calligraphy and other Chinese cultural wonders.
As one of the oldest cultures we have, China was home to many innovations that shape the world. I would particularly love to go to Shanghai but also explore some of the magnificent forests and rocky terrain of which I have seen photos.
The more we all learn about each other, the better we will understand one another. That sounds simplistic but none-the-less true and never more important as it is today.
