Symbolism: Blissful Pleasure
“Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors where were only walls.”
—— Joseph Campbell
The poet Keats may have been the first to call the sweet pea by its common name, which derives from the Greek word lathyros for “pea”or “pulse”, and the Latin word odoratus meaning “fragrant”. Sweet peas of many colors provided an important element in Edwardian potpourris and wedding bouquets as a symbol of bliss. The Victorians were fond of the flower’s sweet fragrance as well as its charming butterfly shape. After an enjoyable visit, a bunch of sweet peas was customarily given as a gift to say”Thank you for a lovely time.”
