Americans do not realize how safe abortions are. 

The public debate on abortion has become increasingly fraught, but many Americans remain uninformed on the issue. 

Medication abortion/ Surgical abortion

This ignorance means they are unaware that most abortions in America are carried out with medication. 

In a recent survey conducted by YouGov on behalf of The Economist, 38% of Americans reckoned that surgical termination was most common.

The share of terminations carried out with pills rose from 39% in 2017 to 54% in 2020, according to a survey by the Guttmacher Institute, a pro-choice research group.

Respondents to the YouGov survey in Europe had a better understanding of the procedure.
