80% of people in Japan say Tokyo Olympics should be called off

More than 80% of people in Japan who were surveyed in two polls in the last few days say the Tokyo Olympics should be canceled or postponed, or say they believe the Olympics will not take place.

The polls were conducted by the Japanese news agency Kyodo and TBS — the Tokyo Broadcasting System.

The results are bad news for Tokyo organizers and the International Olympic Committee as they continue to say the postponed Olympics will open on July 23.

Tokyo is battling a surge of COVID-19 cases that prompted the national government last week to call a state of emergency. In declaring the emergency, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said he was confident the Olympics would be held.

Japan has controlled the virus relatively well but the surge has heightened skepticism about the need for the Olympics and the danger of potentially bringing 15,000 Olympic and Paralympic athletes into the country.

The Olympics could also attract tens of thousands of coaches, judges, officials, VIPs, sponsors, media and broadcasters. It is not clear if fans from abroad will be allowed, or if local fans will attend events.

Japan has attributed about 3,800 deaths to COVID-19 in a country of 126 million.

The TBS poll asked if the Olympics can be held. In the telephone survey with 1,261 responding, 81% replied “no” with only 13% answering “yes.” The “no” responses increased 18 percentage points from a similar survey in December.

In Kyodo’s poll, 80.1% of respondents in a telephone survey said the Olympics should be canceled or rescheduled. The same question in December found 63% calling for cancellation or postponement.

Kyodo said the survey covered 715 randomly sexted households with eligible voters. Neither poll listed a margin of error.

The Switzerland-based IOC earns 91% of its income from selling broadcast rights and sponsorships.

The American network NBC agreed in 2011 to a $4.38 billion contract with the IOC to broadcast four Olympics through the Tokyo. In 2014 it agreed to pay an added $7.75 billion for six more games — Winter and Summer — through 2032.

Then we need to talk about how stupid of a survey this was. Why would you lump together a normative opinion with a predictive one?
Ok guys I read the article. The two questions posed were in two separate polls and BOTH of these findings were 80%. Not additive or cumulative or whatever. It was the same percentage or about so. There was no nefarious narrative pushing here, just a really terribly worded headline.

I thought the Olympics would have been held I. 2020... Weren't they called off at this time last year?

RickyOzzy
80%?
That's what I call herd immunity!
80%?

Didn’t Florida offer to host instead? How would that even work theoretically?

plural_of_nemesis
Theoretically, Florida would have more than enough existing sports facilities and international travel options to host an Olympics on short notice. They could maybe even test and isolate all of the athletes and teams from the public.
In reality, there is no way this would ever happen. The IOC won't approve it. Countries wouldn't want to participate in it. It's not going to happen in Florida.

A lot of those new hotels have crumbled .
My friend worked for one of the biggest nicest hostels in Japan , they were raking it in, she was helping plan a new hostel they were gonna open in Kyoto and bam just like that , theyre practically begging people to come, offering discounted rooms to stranded tourists
Almost everyone got laid off . The company only existed because they were banking on the olympics to break even .

nosha3000
Surely the olympics wouldn’t involve international tourists/spectators anyway? That seems utterly ridiculous during a pandemic

onizuka11
Feel really bad for Japan for having such shit luck.

azsori
I was in Japan 2016, and Tokyo 2020 stuff was everywhere, and that kick ass underground walkway was being expanded. Back then I thought, "I should just book a return trip now to see the Olympics in 2020".

Fox_Powers
I dont doubt it. 80% of residents have nothing at stake. probably more like 95% actually. They probably didnt want the olympics to begin with. Waste of money, traffic, etc.
The investment is sunk, taxes will be paid. some local business's will miss out, but they probably werent going to get the hopeful boost anyway due to greatly reduced tourism.

Kinglix
I've yet to see a country who all agree that they want Olympics (for good reason).
It always seems something that that politicians/tourist boards want, but the populace doesn't... maybe that's something we should consider.

pewpewhadouken
in japan here. i’d say that in japan there’s a lot of disinterest in the olympics and the potential for the virus to spread more. In Tokyo however, maybe only 50% are opposed. people are tired of the restrictions and the tourism and hospitality businesses are desperate for a cash infusion.

PublicTowel
Ever been to one? I have and it was the best two weeks of my life. Watched the best athletes in the world, partied day in and day out, banged girls from all over the globe, didn't even have time to wash the piece in between a couple of times.

hankhill10101
And Japanese hate foreigners anyway.

printergumlight
I thought it was already canceled?

nrsys
Currently scheduled to take place later this year after being delayed last year.
There was recent news that it had been decided to cancel, but nothing has been announced officially.

day7seven
I think whoever officially declares it cancelled (Tokyo or the IOC) has to pay for it so they are both playing chicken hoping the other one will call it off.

Lord_BrunoFernandes
It basically has been. The government decided, but it isn't "official" yet.

kantokiwi
I'd say the vast majority of these people probably never actually wanted it in the first place

LodgePoleMurphy
When I lived in Atlanta in 1995 80% of us didn't want them either.

Bikeboy76
London 2012 still 'The Best Olympics Ever.'

PolygonInfinity
I don't know Athens was pretty incredible in 04.

geekedflaco11
I thought it was already canceled

Hockinator
It was delayed from 2020 to 2021

Darwing
it would be a massive disaster if it isn't.. but that's literally billions and billions of dollars and man hours out the window

AktuallyIsDolan
as an Australian I don't want it, it's such a waste of money imo.
my city still has the housing for athletes from the Commonwealth games just sitting there cos no one wants to live in them, too ugly.

grooomps
yeah because the australian open is going off without a hitch so far /s

PolygonInfinity
I don't blame them one bit, we all know how the Olympic village goes. The athletes would never be responsible enough to handle it.

Lefty_22
The other 20% live in Tokyo and actually want the business $.

KennyMaMaNoodle
Guess I’m less sad that next Japan Olympics Winter will be held in like a decade.

whk1992
I would love to see how Olympic athletes social distance after their races.

ryuujinusa
Japan here. Agreed.
The governments feet dragging and overall lack of any good plan to attack covid is NOT a place the olympics should be held.

doublepulse
I swear I see this same headline every day but each time the percentage has risen.

luvcartel
God I feel so bad for the athletes but I understand why they wouldn’t want it. It’s be awesome if a bunch of smaller events could be held across the world for all the different sports. It just makes me so sad that some of these Athletes are in the prime of their career from a lifetime of dedication and hard work only to have it all be a huge waste of time. Most events you’re only competitive for a window of time and 4 years is a long time.

RedditUser46754
Doesn't hosting the Olympics typically lead to massive influx of tourism (more than the city can handle in such a short time) along with increased crime? I mean it's probably great for businesses but I doubt the everyday person gets to benefit from the Olympics very much.

getjustin
But they already designed the logo. And the lovable mascots!

jaredkushnerisabutt
If they do it without any audience, I'm OK with that. I think a lot of sports are having success by following pre cautions
