PWS AND NUTRITION
With a slower metabolism people with PWS can only consume 60% of the kilojoules that someone else of the same age can. This is to maintain weight – less if weight loss if required.
Nutrition plays a vital role, to make sure that every mouthful counts.
Additionally, people with PWS are less effective at processing carbohydrates and put on weight much more easily when they are consumed. The reward mechanism in the brain is more pronounced with the consumption of refined carbohydrates for people with PWS, making them almost addictive.
A five-year research study concluded that a diet lower in carbohydrates, moderate in protein and increased quality fats is more beneficial. Fibre is an extremely important component of this mix also. The carbohydrates need to be complex and mostly derived from vegetables.
Research also suggests a diet rich in the right foods can improve energy levels, learning, speech, mood and gut mobility.
With regular access to expert nutritional advice for these specific needs extremely difficult to obtain, parents are often forced to undertake this role. Many parents spend countless hours researching and then preparing meals. Ratios and portions are constantly monitored and controlled.
It is therefore very disheartening when family and friends make comments like “come on, one won’t hurt” or “are you sure you’re feeding her enough” or “he’s a growing boy, he needs more carbs”. The diet of most people with PWS doesn’t allow for extras.
