DIFFUCULTY LEVEL
THIS CAMPAIGN IS NOT FOR ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS AND NEED SOME SKILLS DESCRIBED BELOW
You have to be somewhat proficient in flying the Hornet in order to succeed in this campaign. The required skillset includes: CASE I/II/III landings, formation flying, waypoint creation and management, bullseye referencing, air to air refueling (though not mandatory), ATFLIR operations, A-A and A-G weapons empolyment and countermeasures use. You will also receive many task in real time and without proper knowledge of the aircraft, you can be "behind the jet" at times. Don't say you were not warned.
YOUR WINGMEN - THE AI 你的僚机 - AI
USE F-10 RADIO MENU TO CONTROL YOUR WINGMEN
NORMAL RADIO COMMANDS WILL NOT WORK
Contrary to my previous campaigns, Raven One does not use the built-in radio menu to control your wingmen (so Wingman 1-4), but utilises F-10 radio menu options based on the mission context. You will always be notified by text message whenever such an option is available. The main reason was to increase the effectiveness of your wingmen. Two other reasons are immersion (you will only hear one voice throughout the mission) and realism (allowing your wingmen to hold high overhead while you attack etc.).
Still, AI is an AI and will do dumb things from time to time. Please don’t blame me if they
do!
THIS CAMPAIGN USES ADVANCED RADIO MANAGEMENT
EASY COMMUNICATIONS OPTION NEEDS TO BE TURNED OFF
YOU NEED TO BE TUNED TO CORRECT FREQUENCY / ON CORRECT CHANNEL TO HEAR COMMUNICATIONS
REMEMBER ABOUT ENABLING MONITORING GUARD FREQUENCY
As all my previous campaigns, this one utilises realistic radio procedures. Make sure to check your channels and frequencies in the kneeboard before the mission and follow on-screen instructions to change them as necessary / appropriate.
Throughout the campaign terms “PRI” (COM1) and “AUX” (COM2) are used. “PRI” is your primary, left radio. “AUX” is your auxiliary, right radio.
NOTE: it is a good habit to have the GUARD monitoring enabled. In order to do that, you should turn on background monitoring of guard by pressing the GRCV button on the UFC.
MOST OF AWACS CALLS USE BULLSEYE REFERENCE AND ARE MISSION SPECIFIC
AWACS calls are prerecorded by voice actors and specific to the missions, they also use the bullseye (in our case: ROCK) references rather than BRAA (although these calls will also come in occasionally). Make sure to learn how to use your SA page and radar to efficiently utilise these.
IN ORDER TO PROGRESS YOU NEED TO LAND AFTER THE MISSION
YOU CAN LAND ON THE CARRIER OR DIVERT FIELD (IF AVAILABLE)
SCORING REQUIREMENTS ARE OUTLINED AT THE END OF THIS GUIDE (WARNING: CONTAINS POSSIBLE SPOILERS!)
If you don’t land, you won’t progress - as simple as that. If you divert to land, the campaign will continue normally, but you will loose points (it is assumed that you have flown back to mother a few hours later or on the following day). The divert field is clearly stated in the briefing material. If you land anywhere else - don’t finish the mission, refuel and continue.
Also, If you fail to achieve your mission goals but land afterwards, the campaign will still move forward. So make sure to hit that “replay” button if you want to try again!
KNEEBOARD IS YOUR BEST FRIEND CONTAINING ALL THE RELEVANT INFORMATION - USE IT OFTEN!
You will find all the basic info there: frequencies, loadout, flight plan, mother and tanker, code words for the day (very important in some of the missions, as threats or other objects of interest are often referenced by these codes instead of real names), divert field information, maps etc.
READ EACH BRIEFING CAREFULLY !
CHECK THE DESIGNER’S NOTES AT THE END OF EACH BRIEFING
There is a lot of important information there that - if you miss it - may lead to errors and even being unable to finish the given mission. Read them carefully! Written by Kevin Miller and Jell-O, these captivate to the fullest the spirit of the briefings conducted in the ready room by real USN aviators.
TAKEOFF SEQUENCE
ALWAYS CHECK DESIGNER’S NOTES FOR SPECIFIC INFORMATION
WAIT FOR THE SIGN FROM THE TAXI DIRECTOR AND GO TO THE ASSIGNED CAT
In most sorties the Taxi Director will give you a sign when you should start taxiing and which CAT to use. It is important to follow these closely, as the deck can be pretty crowded.
FLIGHT PLAN
ALWAYS CLOSELY FOLLOW YOUR FLIGHT PLAN
If you don’t you may miss some trigger zones and break the mission! Usually, after the attack you should fly to the GET WELL point.
ON RTB YOU MAY HAVE AN OPTION TO PERFORM AAR
FOLLOW THE ON-SCREEN INSTRUCTIONS
REMEMBER TO KISS-OFF YOUR WINGMEN USING SPACE BAR
Most of the instructions on RTB are pretty self-explanatory and augmented by text messages on screen. You should always have a recovery tanker overhead which you can use if you need to or if you fail to trap.
AIR TO AIR REFUELLING IN THE MISSION
SOME MISSIONS WILL REQUIRE YOU TO TAKE FUEL IN ORDER TO CONTINUE
IN THESE MISSIONS A LIMITED “SAVE GAME” FEATURE IS IMPLEMENTED
WORKS IN MISSIONS 14 AND 15
In two of the missions AAR is mandatory. If you are not good in air to air refuelling, at the start of the mission there is an option to advance to the point after the AAR. So if you fail at tanking, end the mission, restart it and choose the point directly after refueling. In some missions AAR will help, but with correct fuel management will not be necessary.
ALL MISSIONS ENFORCE CERTAIN TYPES OF OPTIONS; IT IS ADVISED THAT YOU ALLOW THIS TO HappEN (BY NOT TICKING THE BOX TO ENFORCE YOURS)
IT IS RECOMMENDED TO PLAY THE CAMPAIGN WITH LABELS SET TO “DOT NEUTRAL”
IT IS RECOMMENDED TO PLAY WITH CIVILIAN TRAFFIC SET TO OFF
The labels are especially important and “DOT NEUTRAL” option is a very good middle ground between no labels (which would make some missions very difficult) and full labels (that would make them too easy).
SOME MISSIONS FEATURE EA-6 PROWLER, WHICH IS NOT AVAILABLE IN GAME. FOR THE TIME BEING IT HAS BEEN REPLACED BY ADDITIONAL F/A-18C.
As soon as Heatblur’s A-6 AI is added to DCS, it will take over the role with a correct skin.
