Lilies are among the most exalted flowers in the world, held in high regard and long considered sacred by numerous ancient civilizations. In Christian lore, the lily is said to have sprang from the repentant tears of Eve after her expulsion from the Garden of Eden. The lily was also regarded as the symbol of the Virgin Mary’s purity. In pagan and Christian cultures and throughout Victorian times, the lily was a sign of chastity before marriage, and of fertility afterwards.
