  • laurel: [植]月桂树

  • pale: wooden or metal fencing or pickets that are painted green

    eg. The garden sloping to the road, the house standing in it, the green pales and the laurel hedge, every thing declared they were arriving.

  • ostentatious: too obviously showing your money, possessions, or power, in an attempt to make other people notice and admire you

    eg. As soon as they were in the parlour, he welcomed them a second time, with ostentatious formality, to his humble abode, and punctually repeated all his wife's offers of refreshment.

  • repentance: the fact of showing that you are very sorry for something bad you have done in the past, and wish that you had not done it

    eg. But though every thing seemed neat and comfortable, she was not able to gratify him by any sigh of repentance.

  • clump: a group, especially of trees or flowers

    eg. He could number the fields in every direction, and could tell how many trees there were in the most distant clump.

  • affability: the quality of being friendly and easy to talk to

    eg. She is all affability and condescension.

  • cross: annoyed or angry:

    eg.She looks sickly and cross.
