On November 22nd, Argentina star Lionel Messi was holding his head in despair after his side were beaten 2-1 by Saudi Arabia in their World Cup opener.
Four weeks later, on Sunday, Messi was holding the World Cup trophy, his side bouncing back magnificently from that shocking defeat to claim their third title and first in 36 years. And they did it in what many observers say was the greatest football match ever played, beating defending champions France in a penalty shootout after the teams were locked 3-3 over 120 minutes. Messi's confident penalty after just 23 minutes was the just of an incredible sequence of events at the Lusail Iconic Stadium. Argentina were in full control as Angel Di Maria slots home his side's second in the 36th minute. The French looked bereft of the ideas until the 80th minute. A penalty by Kylian Mbappe and France suddenly came to life. Just one minute later, Mbappe volleyed in the equaliser to spark wild celebrations among player and fans. On to extra time and Messi again, pouncing on a rebound to give Argentina a 3-2 lead and one hand on the trophy. But France were not done. After a handball offence, Mbappe stepped up to score his third - the first World Cup final hat-trick since England's Geoff Hurst hit a treble in 1966. But it was all in vain for Mbappe. In the penalty shootout, France missed two kicks while Argentina converted four to claim the title.
