海外社团 | 埃克塞特大学科幻奇幻社团介绍

日语翻译田田老师受平台委托首先向13所日本高校科幻社团发出采访邀请函，并陆续收到了回信（相关回信可查看《海外社团》栏目）。2021年年末，河流向英语地区部分海外高校通过邮件取得联系，接下来，高校科幻平台将陆续刊登这些回信。

协会全称：埃克塞特大学科幻奇幻社团（The University of Exeter Science Fiction and Fantasy Society）

成立时间：60 年代以来，社团以各种形式存在。最近，它从“科幻奇幻恐怖协会（Sci fi and fantasy and horror）”更名为”科幻奇幻（Sci fi and fantasy）”，去掉了恐怖（horror）类型，目前能找到最早的官方文件是二十世纪七十年代的。

Dear Alliance of Sci Fi Societies of China,

We are very glad to hear from you and hear of the increasing numbers of societies like our own all over China. We too have struggled with membership over the recent years and are constrained by our university guild (who manage us). Although this year we have had better membership and attendance than ever! We are very happy to share how we do things with you and we hope that it helps you spread sci fi even further in your communities!

1. The University of Exeter Science Fiction and Fantasy Society

2. The society has existed in various forms since the 60s. Most recently, it rebranded from Sci fi and fantasy and horror to just sci fi and fantasy. The earliest official documents we can find are from the 1970s.

6. Recruitment in our society starts in September each year, we recruited around 65 during the first week of our first semester. Throughout the first semester we increased our numbers passively to 102. We estimate we will gain 4-10 more members at the start of the second semester.

7. Rather than departments, we instead just have positions in a committee which manages society affairs. We have a president, vice-president, treasurer (Handles money), librarian (manages our book collection), mascot (dresses up at events and helps manage crowds), 2 social secretaries (manages and organises social events) and 2 general secretaries (manage general affairs, social media and take notes in meetings).

8. We meet up once a week (or sometimes twice). We run quizzes, challenges (like from tv shows), lightsaber fights, cinema trips, tabletop games (like battletech, warhammer and magic the gathering), boardgame playing nights, movie nights, art creating nights, sci fi and fantasy themed debates, trips to the pub (bars) to drink and socialise, fancy dress socials, bowling/group activities and roleplaying games (like dungeons and dragons). We also offer books to borrow.

9. We currently have not the time or resources to run special events. A few years ago, however, we used to run a convention called Microcon, which covered all things sci fi and fantasy and had special guests.

10. We have not received any awards. We have had difficulties with managing numbers, acquiring spaces to host certain events, getting risk assessments and finances approved by the guild, timing issues due to bureaucracy and waiting on things going through and general management of finances and paying for things from our society bank account.
