As the moonlight paints the stones white, and night wind blows chill, causing the tendrils of the campfire to snap and crackle... Amidst the calls of nocturnal birds winding across the distant sand dunes, the Jinni begins her tale...
jinni (单数) / jinn (复数): A Jinni, in Arabic mythology, is a spirit inhabiting the earth but unseen by humans, capable of assuming various forms and exercising extraordinary powers. In common folklore, jinn are capable of assuming human or animal form... Jinn delight in punishing humans for any harm done to them, intentionally or unintentionally, and are said to be responsible for many diseases and all kinds of accidents. However, those human beings knowing the proper magical procedure can exploit the jinn to their advantage. (摘自:britannica.com/topic/jinni)
Thousands of years have passed since the events told of in this tale. The desert had yet to become so desolate, and the oases spread out across the land like glittering jewels...
In those days, the Jinn walked the earth in great numbers, and they lived within the silver night wind and the flowing sands, in the ripples of the unknowable ocean, and in the pattering of the rainforest springs...
walk the earth = to exist, be alive
We Jinn were not ordinary creatures, but we were the servants of the mistress of flowers.
We were untroubled by basic want, nor were we shackled by material thirst. It was "life" itself that greatly fascinated us...
The blooming and wilting of flowers, the gathering and scattering of birds — these were the things that held us in thrall.
in thrall = [literary] in a state of being controlled or strongly influenced by someone or something
Apart from that, only our "true names" could bind us.
We were carefree so long as our mistress walked the earth, and we enjoyed her eternal paradise, her love, and her comfort...
But tragedy would come, and our paradise crumbled as the mistress departed... Our revelry turned to mourning, and all that was good and lovely was violently perverted in that anguish...
pervert = to change sth so that it is not what it was or should be
And so we gave Al-Ahmar our true names, and became his servants... For he promised to find us our eternal companion, our true master.
Deluded hope and trust did we harbor in our hearts, and so forsook our freedom, accepting imprisonment within silver bottles and servitude to his realm...
and so = and therefore
servitude [n.] = the condition of being enslaved or of being completely under the control of someone else
But what was lost was forever lost, never again to return.
But do not think that the Jinn were wanton servants.
Only a love bordering upon madness could make the Jinn give their "true names" willingly.
border on/upon sth = 接近于,近乎
For it was their deep love for the mistress of flowers that drove them to embrace the desert from the first.
Yet, waking to face the tomfoolery of this barren world caused a surly Jinni to fall incurably in love with the shepherd...
【2】
The cold of the desert nights bears a heft to its chill, and murmurs of secrets whisper over the midnight dunes basked beneath the silvery fang of a crescent moon...
With a low voice, the Jinni breathes life into a tale from an age long past...
Once, a Jinni and a mortal king found themselves entwined in love, and from their union came children...
But as time flowed, the mortal could not break the chains of power and ambition that clung to him, betraying the love of the Jinni...
Hence, on the path of revenge, she twisted the fates of her children, wreathing them in a plot to unmake their father and kingdom...
And time sailed ever onward...
The children of the Jinni grew to become king and queen, yet fell to the same schemes, to the same curse... Until their kingdom was finally shattered upon reaching calamity's end.
Such an ending, then, was that which the Jinni had orchestrated from the very beginning...
orchestrate = to arrange sth carefully, and sometimes unfairly, so as to achieve a wanted result

Through the Jinni's entranced eyes, you see a ragged shepherd boy along with a dancing maiden, her presence resplendent like a limpid gem beneath the moon's gaze...
resplendent = shining brilliantly; gleaming; splendid
Festering hatred assails your senses, before alchemizing into primal, burning love in a sudden instant...
Such love cannot be contained by the vessel of a mortal. It is an emotion that can swallow one whole.
contain = to control or hide a strong emotion
"Then, mortal... What desire of yours can I make manifest?"
【2】

You see the pomegranate juice flowing freely, like the wine of tyrants, the infatuation of lovers, and the fresh blood of innocent victims...
You see the plump pomegranate being handed to the shepherd boy...
"Take a bite and use it to quench your thirst. But be careful not to let it burst in your hands..."
【3】
Through the Jinni's entranced eyes, you see flaring flames and blunt blades...

You see the freezing moonlight and viscous honey...
Through the golden honey, you see the underlying scheme...
The princess sees the consequences of her innocuous error, her sanity giving way to madness...
Her invincible husband is shaken by the tragedy, his greedy heart blinded by ecstasy...
All the sorrow, joy, and madness are finally turned into food for the Jinn-Mother to devour...
"It is curtains for the carnivorous Night of Honey — Such is the end of the Jinni's lover..."
【4】
Through the Jinni's entranced eyes, you see a vortex of decay and betrayal...
The Spirit of Victory fell into madness due to a signet ring most dark, and in a series of tragedies, Queen Shirin brewed the honey-colored catastrophe before her mind yielded to hysteria...
The people turned against each other, and the Jinn scattered across the lands... Broken souls became fuel to a titanic machine, and the mindless descendants of the Seelie were degraded into slaves of infinite power...
Then, the merciless era of the Spirit of Victory began... The crazed king and the nobles rejoiced in their superiority...
Yet none were aware that all the happenings within Gurabad were created by the scheming hands of the Mother of the Jinn...
"Shiruyeh is Khorramdin."
Thus says the man in the brass mask.
"There will be no heirs to your name. I will do away with the many idols your temples. I will consign you to your grave, for such does one as despicable as you deserve."
(Nahum)》1:14,"There will be no more children born to carry on your name. I will cut out the graven and molten images from the temples of your gods. I myself will dig your grave, because you are vile."
Says the man in the brass mask.
Through the Jinni's entranced eyes, you bear witness to Gurabad as it is engulfed in darkness...
The city of Gurabad has long been a reservoir of water, but now its inhabitants scatter like a torrent.
《那鸿书》2:8,Nineveh was like a pool of water from its first day on. But now its people are fleeing.
The Jinn, devoid of intellect, pour out from cold machine husks, from the soldiers' weapons... And the scarlet wine, the juice of the pomegranate, bursts forth...
The pomegranates are crushed and cracked, and they are trampled into a mass of mud... Plump or withered, rich or humble... The scarlet fruits, with hue and cry, tell of the Khorramdin's coming — the joy of life and the joy of vengeance.
hue and cry = a loud clamor or public outcry
The juice tastes as sweet and mellow as sweet wine, and flows through the city, turning the reservoir into a vast red sea...
The sea first drowns the slaves, and then their masters howl as they flounder amidst the roiling waves of night.
出自德国诗人Bertolt Brecht的诗"Fragen eines lesenden Arbeiters"(一个工人读书时的疑问):"Selbst in dem sagenhaften Atlantis / Brüllten in der Nacht, wo das Meer es verschlang / Die Ersaufenden nach ihren Sklaven.",看了几个英译本和一篇德文解析(grin.com/document/277648)似乎都理解为即使在城被大海淹没的时候,溺水之人还在呼叫他们的奴隶(例:Even in fabled Atlantis, the night that the ocean engulfed it / The drowning still cried out for/screamed for/bawled for their slaves.)。
Finally, you see the brass-masked king. He flees into the shadows — into Shirin's arms...
Her face is old and dim, all traces of life and reason having vanished from it like dust in the night's wind.
And then there is King Kisra, who turned into a dark monster... they all are your flesh and blood, yet you rejoice, and you exult in that retribution.
O Gurabad, you are mortally stricken, your shame shown to all...
All who receive these tidings shall clap and shout for joy...
For is there anyone who has not felt your unending tyranny?
I will hurl abominable filth upon you, making you look foolish, and making an example of you." (International Standard Version)
你所行的恶谁没有时常遭遇呢?"(和合本)/ "There is no healing for your injury — your wound is fatal. Everyone who hears about you will applaud, because who hasn’t escaped your endless evil?" (ISV)
【6】
Through the Jinni's entranced eyes, you see a palace shaped by bricks of crimson jade bound to a garden, flourishing with a multiplicity of vibrant plants that bask in infinite bird-song.
The Jinn are the most intelligent servants of the Mistress of Flowers, and to her they are minstrels and cupbearers both.
In her garden, addled monks and ragged wanderers dance, spiraling in step with the daffodils, supping the lifeblood of the daughters of the vine...
addled = confused, especially mentally
Here is a garden unlike any other, the place where the Lord of Flowers once lived, the place where she now sleeps...
"The roses blossom like crackling flames, setting the lives of nocturnal birds aflame. And though the candles smile gently, they offer the approaching moths only ruin."
The fire of the cheek of the rose consumed the nightingale’s harvest: The moth’s calamity, the laughing face of the candle, became."(译者:Henry Wilberforce Clarke)
You see her reach out and behold her skin gleaming with lunar sheen. You gaze upon her mien and witness ineffable beauty. Her appearance is like the totality of her Jinn, their wondrous aspects only mere petals to her complete flower, her being the quintessence to every last scent in existence...
mien [literary] = a person's appearance, especially the typical expression on their face
And then, you meet her gaze—
And face nothingness.
You greet the endless void, falling into its embrace, mind afire with constant terror...

Ormazd was once the lover of the one called Liloupar. It was by the Jinni's love that he rose from a lowly shepherd to become a king amongst mortals.
l once believed that he was no mere mortal companion. Foolishly, I fell for those eyes of his... But the vanity and selfishness that kings are wont to have seized him in the end.
be wont to do sth = to often do something
He turned out to be no different from those mortal rulers who live one day and die the next, wandering amidst dreams of conquest and persecution, building their palaces upon quicksand.
Like I said, I punished him — handed ruin down from father to son, across three generations.
Kisra Parvezravan, Shirin, they are my blood... It was by schemes of blood, honeyed execution, and raging ambition that I punished them all.
Parvez [Persian] = victorious;ravan [Persian] = soul, spirit
Vain Parvezravan, my dear child... He wanted unlimited power, and so I gave it to him.
l designed for him machines driven by the remnants of Jinn spirits, and in a dream of pitch-black darkness, I inspired him to build a colossal machine that could swallow up and spit out a torrent of artificial objects...
They brought him untold wealth, but they also robbed the laborers of their lives and the farmers of their property.
Thus the lords and the rich men wept, crying: "Verily this is the triumph of mortals, the end of slavery!" But only I knew. Only I understood...
This abolition of slavery was itself the beginning of endless and cruel servitude — slave owners were freed from the obligation to raise their slaves, and the slaves were deprived even of small mercies like a full stomach...
Poverty is accompanied by hatred, and hatred begets ambition... Riches lead to greed, and greed also fuels ambition.
It was ambition that drove him to force his queen, Shirin — his elder sister by blood — to create Jinn, mindless and malformed... And her suffering pleased me... it empowered me...
...And I was thus able to foster their flesh and blood.
You refer to Shiruyeh...】
Yes, Shiruyeh, brass-masked Khorramdin. The smallfolk and the slaves saw him as an emissary of my mistress, as a savior to them in their misery.
So he led them to embrace justice... To embrace death.
"The Brass Mask"...】
Ah, yes... Khorramdin, brass-masked King Shiruyeh. "The Emissary of the Mistress"! "Savior of the Commoners and Slaves"! Haha. A gifted charlatan.
And in the end, he led those who followed him to their doom... The earth swallowed them whole, and they fell into a dark chasm together with the entire city.

"At first, a life of slavery is pure suffering. You will feel humiliation and exhaustion. Your dignity will flow from your limbs, from your heart like fresh blood. You will grow cold and you will ache..."
"You will wish to complain, to resist, but your bloodied hands and feet and the barbed whips that strike exhaust you and silence you yet you crave life and fear death..."
"And so you become cowardly and subservient. You still desire freedom, of course, but that freedom leads you to the slave market exhibition, to the gleaming bidding boards and an endless clamor that you've never seen before..."
"And your wicked master shall order you to expose your body, display your talents. And you will do your best, even amidst an ocean of shame, for you no longer wish to live like an animal in a cage, swarming and snatching for every last scrap of food..."
"You see the glamorous dancing girls and their gyrations, the valiant strongmen lifting large rocks, the poets and scholars with their songs and rhetoric..."
"And so you give it your all, until the crowds' ratings become your standard — until that which is displayed on the bidding boards becomes your values. Until jealous slaves and merchants whisper behind your back."
"Till the nobles' eyes follow the movement of your hips, till the emirs praise your surpassing martial skills, till the poets fall before your agile voice and your brilliant words... And even in the ignominy of being displayed, you shall glean the comfort of pride..."
emir = in certain Muslim countries, a ruler, prince, or commander

...To Lord Hibehrous, General of the Cavalry,
After much deliberation, the Council of Nobles has decided to reject your request for funding...
It is apparent that the shrinking of the local oases and degradation of irrigation facilities has had no impact on overall agricultural production, and that any negative consequences can be resolved via the self-regulating nature of long-term commercial and industrial operations.
...Considering the long-term state of poverty and rebellion in Panjvahe, and the increased activity of the adherents of the "Brass Mask," the Treasury believes that any sort of monetary reward, industrial or commercial investment will prove futile, and indeed, will damage the interests of the nobility...
...Do recall, Sir General, that the noble estates are the pillars of the nation. Your duty is to put these rebels and heretics down with an iron fist and to spur the people unto hard work and prosperity... not to arbitrarily request funding with which to aid the indolent and the insurgent.
In the name of His Majesty, Parvezravan the Spirit of Victory, the Council of Nobles once again hereby transfers thirty riot control constructs and four hundred weapons of various types (swords, spears, crossbows among them) infused with Jinn fragments... to you, General Hibehrous, for your judicious use.
judicious = having or showing reason and good judgment in making decisions
...To my dear friend, Mehrak...
... Three times has Hibehrous requested that funds be sent out in the name of "alleviating the situation in disaster-stricken areas" and "repairing the oases and irrigation systems," and has indeed made much ado about it, though perhaps not out of goodwill, I fear...
The priests' calculations indicate that such a motion would add much unnecessary burden upon the treasury without any concrete benefit in return.
...This person is of mean birth and has no backing in the Council of Nobles. Only by the request of His Majesty Parvezravan that he quell rebellions has he attained high rank. And now, he asks for gold and silks, ruins honest folk, and rouses the rabble! Truly does he hold us nobles in contempt...
...We are but humble subjects who serve our great king out of the nobility handed down to us by our forebears. How can we hand our hard-earned fortunes over to these indolent louts and rogues? Is not the protection of one's property the most basic of rights?
...Moreover, this fellow was born to mountain shepherds, making him by nature rebellious and cruel, given to bold-faced violence.
given to = used to say that a person often behaves in a specified way
Though he may be a General of the Cavalry and may have His Majesty Parvezravan's ear... But with how he ruins the greater body to enrich himself, and how he indulges in sloth and lapsing judgment, one cannot say for sure that he is not one of Brass Mask's accomplices...
have someone's ear = have access to and influence with someone
...I urge all my fellow nobles to look into this matter and stay on your guard!

His Majesty Parvezravan, the Spirit of Victory, has been lax of late in the practice of his faith in King Deshret. The temples and the carvings have not been maintained in some time.
of late = recently
As priests, we believe that the shrinking of the oases, the deterioration of the harvests, and the rise of the Brass Mask heresy all find their roots in this lapse in faith... Failing in one's faith is tantamount to a failure of morality, and moral rot leads a nation to chaos. We urge the High Priest to remonstrate with His Majesty in time...
tantamount = being almost the same or having the same effect as sth, usually sth bad
...As for the dissatisfied citizenry, clergy of all levels should spare more time and effort to teach them to love their neighbor and help to maintain order, rather than pursue these baseless fantasies... to prevent the stirring of trouble from nothing and the destabilization of society.
(Much of the content in the middle has either become blurred or is missing altogether. Either way, these sections are indecipherable.)
...King Deshret no longer answers the cries of the High Priest. This bodes ill...
...Queen Shirin has ceased to be seen at court, and His Majesty Parvezravan does not ask after her whereabouts. Perhaps the folk tales of the "Demon Queen" may yet be true... Or perhaps it maybe possible to exaggerate that title and turn folk-gossip to better ends, such as suppressing the spread of this Brass Mask heresy...

...To the Council of Nobles,

...The threshold of King Deshret's temple has been modified to serve as an assembly practice site to better meet the constructs... needs, and to facilitate quick assembly...
...The production of Jinn fragment-infused weaponry and constructs has been expanded further, while the hiring of mortal troops has not decreased...
... We must draw manpower for military use from areas that pose a security risk, cut off any contact they might have with the rebels, and provide suitable training and living conditions such that any identification with the insurgency may be eliminated...

...The third and fourth honor guards have not sent word for a long while, and the Dusk Birds sent to them have not returned...

...Perhaps this is due to the ubiquitous and thick smoke. It must have scared them all away...
...It is the thirteenth day of the Great Revolt... The temple guards have resisted 4 charges this day alone...
...These people were dressed in rags, but they bore brass masks. Some of them wore masks made of wood or paper painted that color...
...Some holy statues were destroyed, and all the statues of His Majesty Parvezravan were toppled... Despite the construct forces defeating them time and time again...

...Perhaps they were fueled by overwhelming hunger, or anger...
...General Hibehrous has gone to see His Majesty. Perhaps this is the last time we shall see mighty Parvezravan give a royal order in person...

...Sandstorms have become more common recently. We hope that all villagers will work together to dredge the river and thus avoid its blockage by sand and gravel...
