 40 Lesson 7 - Painting Combined with Photos Part 1 - Painting + Photo - W

P40 - 00:01

so far, we've covered a pure painting. And then we went into a pure photo bashing. I'm pretty sure you can guess what's going to come next.

Like, come on. Clearly we're learning graphic design today.

Yes. Today we are going to discuss how to design with the font Helvetic. No, I'm kidding.

we’re going to be combining both photo bashing and painting.

Like someone once thought that, cake is really delicious, but so are strawberries. So if I mix them together, then I guess strawberry shortcake.

or someone thought, hm, I love jeans. I also love high heels. So I'm gonna make jules, Jean high heels. Okay. So maybe not everything in the world should be put together.

If you do own these specific pair of shoes. not judging, I promise. Okay, maybe a little bit of judging. Please send me a picture, if you're wearing it. Oh my god!

But I promise that for bashing and painting definitely fit well together. Ok.

So far in our concept art pizza, we've gone over the dough, which is our black and white values and composition.

Then our sauce, which is our color and our lighting.

Now we're simply changing our topics, which is the actual technique that we use to carry everything else out. Our VisDev painting, you can think of it as like a pepperoni pizza,

like so. And then our photo bashing, you can think of it as a mushroom pizza like that.

And now we combine them together into the ultimate pizza, pepperoni and mushroom pizza.

I realized that in this photograph, there is neither pepperoni and mushroom pictured. You would be surprised at how difficult it is to find a very large image of a pepperoni and mushroom pizza. But as long as it proves my point, man, I'm just hungry. Now. Anyways, you're probably wondering, well, what portion of the industry does painting with photos fit into, like if this VisDev is more for animation and photo bashing is more for live action and video games.

But what about painting with photos? And the answer is everything.

painting with photos is honestly the standard for concept art now. everyone is using it, whether it's animation and feature, live action, video games, commercials, advertising illustrations, absolutely everything,

some pieces. And some people use photos more heavily and some others use painting  more heavily. It's all about the specific effect that you want. There is no right or wrong. Just doing.

For example, think about the paintings in the live action where they have to use a specific actor or actress. Do you think the artists who have to turn into a painting a day are going to carefully plot in draft out the actors likeness? No, they're going to use a photo.

We now have photographs and it would be stupid of us not to use the technology that we have. In fact, it doesn't even need to be a photo.

Many people these days use 3D models. And in the industry, there's usually someone on your team who is a specialized 3D modeler, who will provide you a model to paint over.

My point is, though, is that it is a standard skill to be painting on Top of things or adding in photos and textures as a finishing touch, basically adding and stuff for fun or whatever.

It's always super cool to see the usage of photographs and paintings and all sorts of mediums blended together.

Art shouldn't be a purist thing. We should always be trying to innovate and looking for new things.

For example, one of my favourite Anime of all time is a Madonna Magic, which is a on the surface, an incredibly bright and cheerful anime.

But the monsters for the Anime is to use the photographs and collages them to create strange creatures that really don't feel like they fit into the world.

But that's kind of what makes them all the more horrific. I love this show so much.

Another one is something that I just recently watched, which would be the Mitchells versus the machines movie.

This movie was so good. It is a completely animated movie. But there was a scene where they put in a real photo. I know that this looks photo shopped, but this is an actual scene from the movie. And just to see a photograph in a completely animated movie was so unexpected. And it was absolutely hilarious.

Essentially, adding different mediums should be totally natural, whether if it's because the photographs make the speed faster, whether they could help something feel more realistic, or if they're here to make a contrast affect, the possibilities are endless.

Once you learn how to do it, you can use it for whatever you want. after all, I am here to teach you a process, a foolproof process.

And looking back, you'll see now you have both the skills necessary for painting and the skills necessary for a photo bashing.

Combining is going to be a piece of cake. It's much more difficult to teach someone how to do painting with photographs, right off the bat,

because it's kind of like trying to learn two different things at once. It makes a lot more sense to take a little time to get used to and master each one separately so that you're not overwhelmed right off the bat.

You have spent the past two modules on purely photo bashing.

And unless you've been photo bashing from the very beginning, you've probably also been painting to some degree long before you ever took this class.

So it is now time to combine our two powers.

I'm going to paint an entirely new piece. And this time rejoice all of my Cinderella lovers, I am choosing Cinderella. No more little red, little red riding hood. I banish the.

And also I know a lot of people may be thinking. Airi, you've only been trying exteriors. What if I want to paint the inside of a building?

Do not worry my friend. I have thought of everything. I may not be able to show you how to draw absolutely everything in the entire world from phytoplankton to snicker at glitz. But I'm gonna make sure that you get a solid foundation on drawing what you'll most likely be painting in your everyday work or hobby. And part of that would be interiors.

The reason I had put it off until now is because I'm going to teach you perspective as well,

which is the key to painting anything with buildings or manmade structures.

And don't worry like the rest of the class, i'll teach it to you in a fool proof way. It will be painful. Now let's jump right into it. Let me preface that though. I'm showing you only one way, which is the way that I personally like to paint. And I encourage you to take these techniques  and do whatever you want with them. Trying different ways to improve my ways. Make cool stuff, and have a good time at doing so. There is nothing more infectious than seeing true passion and piece.

So I'm going to paint a piece from Cinderella. And just like we've been doing, I'm gonna take a little spin on it. Instead of having it set in France, as it was traditionally, I'm taking it to be set in historical China instead.

And the first thing I do with any pieces, once I have an idea, I go ahead and do a little bit of research. I wanted to pick my Cinderella in the tang dynasty. So the 7th and 8th century, the tang dynasty is very well known for its varied clothing and was one of the wealthiest and most prosperous dynasties.

during this time. The QiXiongRuQun was one of the specific on food that was prominent.

And then look specifically at the tang dynasty paintings of the time. And I don't just look at the wealthy and high class, but I specifically look for these servants, the common folk,

because Cinderella, she's supposed to be a maid essentially. So this is what she would be wearing.

Not necessarily the fancy freely for full stuff. Now that I have my Cinderella ready to go in my head, I ask myself what kind of scene I want to paint, to properly show off the interior. I think i'll have a hiding from in spying on kind of scenario where we can see Cinderella cleaning.

I want to make her feel trapped by her environment.

But because she's supposed to be such a kind hearted girl, I want her to look still very dignified, even though she is cleaning,

maybe she's taking a break from cleaning. And as the audience we are peeking into her life, as if getting introduced to her.

Ok. So I have these ideas down now and I'm going to marinate them into my head.

And I'm going to run off now to look for some inspiration and photos that I will be using as part of piece.

I'll catch you guys in the next video.

41 Lesson 7 - Painting Combined with Photos Part 2 - Easy-PZ-Perspective

P41 - 00:02

Tackling interiors is more nuanced than the exterior. The reason is because mother nature is a very organic designer.

The ground of the forest is a bumpy and lumpy and misshapen.

There can be larges, there can be hills. All of that is totally normal. You can make the ground and to basically any shape that you want to, you can have a lump here. You can have a lump there. But as soon as you introduce a man made structures,

we can't be lumpy and bumpy anymore. Human made objects usually have a very rectangular quality to them, unless everything that you own furniture to your computer is a lumpy bean bag. But I don't think any of us have lump bean bags. Your PC is probably a rectangle. Your table is probably also in the shape of a rectangle or a cylinder. So your table might look like this. Or your table might look like this. They're very solid objects and comparison to say like a rock, which kind of has no shape whatsoever.

So essentially, we now need to properly place these in a way that makes sense. Let's take this room, for example.

Let's say I want to add in a rock, with this rock. I can pretty much put it wherever I wanted to go. I can put it here. I can put it here. I can put it here. So it's a giant rock on this bed. Or I can place it here. No matter where I put this rock, it feels pretty accurate because this rock doesn't have much of form.

So we don't really need to worry too much about where to place it. But let's say that I want to put it in a chair. Now as things start to look a little bit weird.

If I put my chair here, something was really wrong. If I place my chair here, something still looks really wrong. But if I place my chair somewhere in the middle and it feels kind of accurate, I don't know. It feels a little bit less strange. But why do I feel that it fits in the middle? But it doesn't fit anywhere else?

The reason for that is because of the perspective, the perspective lines will follow whatever the direction the objects in the room are facing.

If I put a grid on Top of this image, the grid would look like this. And now let's look at our chair. If you follow the lines from the bottom of our chair, we can find the perspective of this chair.

So now I can properly try and fit my chair to the perspective lines.

And by looking around. I can tell that my chair would be able to fit somewhere here, but I wouldn't be able to put my chair here, because you can see that my perspective lines no longer add up.

This is basically all of perspective, which is just that you need to make things match and line up.

So if I place my chair right here, and I do a little bit of editing. Then I can kind of make the chair blend into my surroundings.

The situation gets a little bit more complicated when you introduce objects that could be turned around.

So for example, a chair in a different perspective. Now there is a way to be able to properly grid out this kind of stuff.

But for me, when it comes to objects that are being turned around, I rely on two things.

The first one is intuition. Typically as humans, we usually have an eye and a pretty good eye to tell whether or not something is in or out of perspective.

The second would be using the horizon line.

So when I was learning perspective, this is what they all taught me every single time is that you have a vanishing point horizon line.

Everything lines up to the vanishing point. And I honestly could never really understand perspective this way.

I don't know why this seeing it like this in a simple drawing where the buildings just went into space just not make much sense to me.

in real life. Yes, everything does follow this rule very exactly.

But it's also a little bit more nuanced than that. When I look at the world, not everything falls onto a grid for me.

Things didn't start clicking until I really just simplified it down and started looking at real life examples.

So ever so quickly, let's go back to our room and I'm gonna simplify perspective into this way.

It did not require an IQ of 200, which is that where everything is converged. This is my horizon line. Okay. Yeah, don't. But here's the thing.

Everything below my horizon line. I will see the Top of so i'll see the Top of this. I'll see the Top of the floor. I will see the Top of this table. I will also see the Top of any chair that I put in.

And if it's above my horizon line, then I will see the bottle and I won't see the Top.

So. I can see the bottom of this little light right here. I see the bottom of my Top floor, which in this case would be my ceiling.

And if I put a chair up here, so if I had to dangle a chair from the ceiling, then I would see the bottom of that chair.

I would not see the top of that chair. And that rule alone has helped me to draw anything I ever wanted or to collage in anything I ever needed into my piece.

For example, if I wanted to envision myself looking down on the scene,

then I just need to know one simple thing. I'm probably gonna see the Top of a lot of stuff, which means that my horizon line is going to be a very high.

here i have turned on the grid. You'll see that all the lines converge towards this point. That is completely off the screen that I am not even able to show you,

because that's just how far off it is. This means that everything in this scene is below the horizon line.

And so I should be seeing the Top of everything. And the further it goes out from our horizon line, the more of the Top that I will see vice versa with the other side.

If I want to do a low angle.

So this is like the pov‘s  backing cleaner.

So if I want to do a low angle, then turning on the grid, you will see that, the lines all converge down to this point here.

Now, obviously, unless you were able to make everything float in the air and go below the floor, then you'll be able to see the Top of the things like the floor and the rug, which make sense, because it is below the horizon line and everything that is above the horizon line. So here you should be able to see the bottom of all of these different things.

For example, we can slightly see the bottom of this ledge.

or we can see the slight bottom of the stored up.

So the next question is, well, how does that help me make my own piece?

I find that the biggest struggle with perspective and some of the most challenging parts of it is that you know how it works. You know about horizon lines. You know all of this stuff. But it's so difficult when you actually have to start a piece, to try and plot everything out. That sounds so intimidating.

For the longest time. It was very intimidating for me. But I'm going to show you a hack that literally transformed my entire outlook on perspective,

which is just take your own photos. Here's a photo from a road trip to my friends went on, rather than me starting from a blank canvas.

So completely white screen and just trying to map out perspective.

I would start off with a photograph first to get my perspective on the check.

Now for me my favorite tool to use would be the perspective tools. So this is a photograph that my friends and I took when we were going on a road trip to the grand canyon.

I'm gonna show you two ways to be able to create perspective lines out of a photograph from pretty much nothing.

The first method is my favorite method, which is the perspective tools method.

This is a specific tool for photoshop, where all you have to do is you just make two lines.

One line here and one line here, you go to the grid, and the AI will literally create a grid for you, just like that.

Now, the specific photoshop tools that I use is the one by Sergey Kritskiy, which does cost money.

But the amount of time that this tool alone has saved me is well worth over 16 pounds.

No, this is not sponsored. I just love this tool to death.

But I also know that some of us don't want to pay money for anything. And you know what? I totally get that. I was in that camp before too. I refuse to pay for anything in my entire life. So let me show you a different way.

You can download perspective Russia’s. So here I have perspective brushes from artist called pixel stains. And I have the tool called the one point perspective.

All I do is I go to a new layer. Let's say that I put my tools on blue and I'm just going to drop randomly one brush.

So now they basically gave me an entire grid. And all I have to do is just move the brush all the way down until I get the proper grid.

The only caveat is that you can see that the brush unfortunately does not go off the canvas. You can hack that by starting off with a really big canvas and then cropping it down later on.

But this is still going to help you so much more. And it is completely Free. I specifically got these brushes by a user named pixel stains.

But there's a lot of different people out there who have these Free perspective grid brushes for photoshop procreate. And I believe that clip studio paint has their own form of perspective which ever method you use.

My entire point is that having these grids is going to be paramount, to help you be able to create interiors or anything with a man made structure.

So now let me run you through my mind as I think about how to make my new Cinderella piece and how I'm able to incorporate perspective into it.

First step of course is to start off with a sketch. And this sketch is just for me, myself. And I, and while I'm showing it to you here now, you'll never ever see me post this anywhere else.

She would have these doors coming in and the light is streaming into these doors.

And then Cinderella is here. Maybe she's taking a break from cleaning.

So here’s her legs, maybe she's looking outside so that her eyes going this way. There are some things in the front, like really big items in the foreground,

so that we can make her feel like she's really trapped.

And I want to keep her somewhere in the 2/3 zone.

So if I had to divide my canvas through the rule of thirds. She would place somewhere on this intersection here.

I think I want a somewhat low angle so that it feels as if we are closer down to the ground as if our point of view was a mouse,

kind of as if we were picking on her by being a little mouse in the story.

Since I still want to go for a little bit of the hiding from in spying on kind of composition.

So now I have my sketch. I kind of know what I'm doing. Obviously, if I turn this into someone people with a maniac, but this is not for them. This sketch is just for us.

Now with the technology of today, I am able to take my phone which has a camera on it. And most phones these days do have cameras on it. And I'm assuming that most of us are living in a square shaped room,

or at least am living in a place that has at least one square shaped room. I've never seen a house or apartment that is completely circular.

That would honestly be super cool. But I don't think most of us live in a circular shape room.  So that means that you have access to be able to create perspective photos with your own phone.

So I went to a particularly rectangular shaped portion of my house. And knowing that I wanted a slightly lower angle, I leaned down really close to the ground and I took this photo. And from this photo, I'm going to create my perspective grid.

Now that my greatest done, I simply take this away and I get my grid.

And I can use this for anything that I want. There's no more having to guess your way into a grid.

And there's no more having to think really, really hard about how high your horizon line should be or how wide your angle should be.

I just take a photograph and I built on Top of it. to me, it takes out all of the stress that makes perspective so intimidating.

And I can also use my photograph as a base to tell myself, OK, I want my floor to be here. My wall can start from here and in this photograph. And this was the key that really unlocked perspective for me.

So without further ado, I'm just gonna go in and re draw my sketch a little bit, still at a very unfinished level.

And that sketch will help me prepare for my photo back painting and tell me exactly what items I'm going to need.

Whether it's to paint or collage.

So as I'm near the end of this sketch, you can see that it's definitely a lot more understandable than the first sketch that I did.

This is still in a very unfinished stage, and things still don't make a little bit of sense. But I can kind of see where this is going.

I see the doors. I see a general perspective. I can see Cinderella. I know where my focus is. So this completely serves the purpose that a proper sketch should serve.

Now, one thing I notice is Cinderella is now shifting away from the original position that I wanted, which was the 2/3 and 1/3 line here.

And that's completely okay. That's a art. Things change.

So instead, I'm actually going to be moving the entire piece a little bit higher and to the left.

Cause now I want Cinderella to be more on the left side and on the left intersection.

In terms of the 2/3 rule, she won't be perfectly on it, but she can get pretty close.

I just don't want her to be too much in the center. initially, because I want to do that hiding from spying on kind of composition. You'll see that I have my wall right here.

This wall here is going to be very forbidding as if it's closing in on her.

If I cover too much, then I won't be able to demonstrate interiors for you guys.

So I have to keep the space relatively open. That being said, having the wall here, I think would be a great place to make her feel as if she's being constructed.

So she would be in this kind of long hallway cleaning the floors.

I note the direction of the light. So that's going to stream in like this. And I also note a little bit of the direction of the shadow, because the sunlight is a very linear ray.

And so the shadows that are caused by sunlight are going to be standing out in their own sort of perspective line,

but we'll get to that. When we get to that. We don't have to worry about that right now.

My next step is to figure out what exact object that I will need.

If I want to either photo bash it or find it references for it, or simply draw it.

So i've got a bucket, I got some doors, I have decor, I have a floor that I want to look at.

I don't want something in the foreground, I'm not sure just yet.

It may be something here for the foreground too. And of course our wall. So knowing these things, this is my new game plan.

With my game plan in hand, I am not able to go off into the world and go look for those specific references that I have mentioned in this piece.

So without further ado, i'll catch you in the next video.
