This is a shining example of the genre. Although it can be difficult to follow at times, unlike alot of novels, which fall off part way, this one only gets better the further it progresses. It feels less like you''re reading a story and more that you''re peering into another world and following the struggle and Journey /Dao of Wang Lin through his life. I absolutely love the philosophy involved and the progression of the outlook/personality of the main character; In the world of Renegade Immortal it is clear to see that one must gain wisdom and enlightenment in order to cultivate to immortality. You can see the feelings and life experiences that the author has poured into his work. The characters are human, and their stories in their realness evoke real emotions. This is an experience you shouldn''t miss.
A must read!

This is probably one of the best Xianxia novel I have ever read and my personal favorite among them (and I''ve read a sizable amount of them). For me personally, one of the reason this novel stands out among its peers is due to the sense of realism and how human the world and its characters feel. More specifically, how the cultivation world is shown and how the main character is portrayed.
The World:
One of the fundamental concepts that underpin this type of stories is that the world is a cruel, dog-eat-dog every-man-for-himself might-makes-right git-gud free-for-all battle-royale deathmatch, which makes sense given the usual concept of cultivation. Typically in these stories, however, the world that is actually shown to us is all rainbows and butterflies, where the line between good and evil is clearly defined (i.e. the main character is always in the right and those aren''t with him are against him), and where nothing of real consequence happens whenever anything happens ever (other than to give artificial power ups to the main character/villains). In the world of Renegade Immortal, however, the author isn''t afraid to show that this type of world is actually dark, cruel and brutal; where the line of morality is blurred and where one misstep or wrong move by anyone (''good'' or ''evil'') can cost you so much more than you bargained for. This thus provides the setting with so much more depth since it creates a lot of room to explore deeper philosophical questions and to provide the real character growth in addition to portray a much more interesting world whether it be the world building or allies/villains to the main character.

The Main Character (Wang Lin):
The linchpin to the entire story, Wang Lin is one of the biggest reason why I find this story works so damn well. To start off, he''s the son of a regular mortal family with mediocre talent with above average intellect... that''s it. He''s not the son of some crazy ultra omega powerful all mighty being nor does he have some absurd unrealistic latent talent for cultivation... just a regular person with no experience with cultivation/cultivators. Thus, when he finally does embark on the cultivation path as a kid, he naturally is excited and enthusiastic to start. As he travels on that path, however, he soon realizes that (as mentioned before) this world isn''t all rainbows and butterflies as he once thought. Unlike many other stories, the author isn''t afraid to throw tragedies at the main character, where (as said before) his actions have real consequences and unintended effects for both him and the people he cares about. And also unlike many other stories, Wang Lin is put in many difficult situation where it is incredibly difficult to make the ''right'' decision and when he does make an ''evil'' decision, he doesn''t try to justify it like other hypocritical main characters. Thus as he claws his way through this cruel world and furthers his cultivation, you can tangibly feel his personality change and his character grow as he tries to adapt to new circumstances time and time again. One of my favorite parts in the entire novel, which is coincidentally what cemented this novel as my favorite novel, is when Wang Lin asked his old friend after a long period of time what the point of cultivating is since only tragedies have happened to him since he started and he laments what his life could have have been if he didn''t embark on the cultivation path. This scene, to me, demonstrated the most realistic and best character growth I''ve ever seen in any cultivation novel I''ve read.

Brief Aside (The Story):
The story starts off fairly slow paced and hits a trough around the 200-300 chapter mark but picks up very quickly after around chapter 400. Overall, however, this novel is paced very well with the author balancing adventuring (faster arcs) with arcs that are more about contemplation, philosophy/enlightenment, and more about understanding oneself (slower arcs). In fact, the mortal arcs in this story are without a doubt the best I''ve seen in any cultivation novel as they are not only entertaining but also slotted very well between big arcs such that the reader can take a break from the constant action in the story and usually highlight a philosophical dilemma or a certain enlightenment. All in all, story itself flows and connects very naturally and more or less progresses in a logical fashion that makes it easy to follow and understand (with certain exceptions, one such exception being the ending). The romance in this novel is kinda meh, but it does serve to develop the main character more so I don''t have many complaints on that.
Final thoughts:
Of course there are a number of other reason why this novel is good, but the realistic world and the relatable main character is what sticks out to me the most. If you''re still on the fence whether you should read this or not, I would definitely recommend you read it as it''s one of the best novels among the multitude of novels out there (you''ll thank me later).

My favorite novel without a doubt.
If you are looking for a novel where character development is taken to the next stage, well this is the novel for you.
Wang Lin''s journey is just one of the things that not only will you read and enjoy, it''s something that will change you as a person and you will definitely come out better after you give this novel a read.
Only aspect you might feel disappointed about is romance, which let''s be honest is quite bad, but also surprisingly pure. It is NOT harem, it might by definition fall under that category, but trust me it is NOT harem.
I don''t recommend binge reading this, I think it''s more enjoyable reading it slowly and taking your time.
This is my first and only review I''ll give ever.

Timeless ancient Al6
Out of all of Er Gen''s novels, this one is probably the most well crafted, although not my favorite.
The story starts out in a slightly hilarious way, our MC is refused by a sect, returns home and then goes out to wander outside and finds his special treasure, getting badly hurt in the process, then the sect accepts him because they thought he was so sad that he couldn''t enter that he wanted to kill himself.
But this story is not comedy, although it exists it''s not the main focus.
this story is about a man longing for something so deeply that he will go to absolutely any lenghts to attain it.
It''s a story about the hardships of cultivation, it''s ups and downs, but also it''s intricacies.
It''s been said quite a few times in the story.
"If only i remained a mortal, i certainly would''ve been happier" or something of the like.

Plot development with twists? check
Character progression? check
But this story isn''t traditional, and that''s why it''s so good. if you''ve read the other Er Gen novels, there''s still a chance you won''t like this, and that''s because of our MC.
He''s a genuine "cultivator".
absolutely ruthless, with no jokes and laughs.
you''re either going to love or hate this novel, so sit down, buckle up cause if you start reading you''re in for a very long one.

It''s one of the best novels from Wuxiaworld, and this is also my favorite Er Gen novel, and I think it''s the only one in which the MC ends up with more than one female(this is not he part that makes the novel being better than the others).
Unlike his other novels, the protagonist tends to be more ruthless and bloodthirsty in the first few hundred chapters. Latter on it becomes similar to the middle chapters of Desolate Era.
The ending is especially good, unlike other novels it is not rushed and leaves no plot holes, but rather opens questions and leaves some answers to the imagination of the reader.
(Not a spoiler) One of my favorite chapters was one in which a certain someone claimed that the whole Renegade Immortal universe is the dream of the protagonist, in which he is caught due to his unwillingness to let go of his emotions. This and other philosophical chapters were extremely thought stirring.
The last chapter and the afterword are amazing, I waited for a month to buy them with Karma after the novel finished to show my appreciation.

It''s a very very unique novel... One of the finest I''ve ever read in this genre!! Non-stop thrills and chills in this one fellas. The characters, story development, plot pacing is just perfect. None of those copy paste scenarios unlike other novels where you go through the same plot & dialogues again and again. Er Gen is simply the best! He''s set the standards so high that I rue and cringe white reading other one''s out there. Uggh. You''ve basically an MC who''s brought up into a cruel ruthless world where he''s just trying to survive and live in peace.
No , it''s not your typical xianxia cliche type story. Just a simple love story. I''ve laughed, cried, and literally gone through every emotion in this novel''s journey. Never a moment of rest on this one folks. Be prepared. Enlightened one...This is what defines true quality. Highly recommended!
P.S- Worth it.

Currently the best Xianxia that I ever read.
The character development kinda slow in the beginning but it build up quite fast. The boost from the beads also only happen in the beginning too, the MC then rely on his wits and hard work.
The action, the battle, the struggle to survive is really something.
after sometime there is plot armor in his cultivation speed tho, like when some "genius" took hundred to thousand of years to cultivate he become lucky and acquire the power in just few years at most its just hundred of years, even tho it always said that without good foundation the cultivation will just become "shallow" or something.
the bad:
There is some element of romance to, not satisfying one. but it is there, and one of the main story element.
and then the ending. it just too sudden, feels like the author just don''t want to continue anymore and then drop the bomb and boom... its ending. and an open ending too boot. just pick the piece you like and that''s your ending.

It''s sad, it''s brutal, it''s heartbreaking, it''s beautiful and it''s an all and all great read. It''s Renegade Immortal. A book that I would argue is the greatest work of Er Gen''s career.
It starts brutal. The MC is awful at cultivating, the cultivation world in this novel is much more ruthless and manipulative compared to other novels and you can feel the frustration of the MC. Our MC risks life and limb, as well as his fundamental well-being to become better. To become strong enough to protect those he loves without regard to the consequences and it shows time and time again in this novel.
Give it a read, you won''t regret it.

My favourite novel by far, the MC is one of a kind in the sense that he truly compels his emotions to you, and displays a subtle array of them, a very complex character.
The history is just amazing as well, it starts with the basics of the world but has secrets all over the place that interconnects in ways that you wouldn''t expect!!.
The fight scenes don''t seem forced, and neither do the emotional parts.
The secondary characters also get nice development, and the struggle of them about the main character (mainly the females) makes them all the more interesting
It has its tiny bits of comedy but it''s mostly a serious read, packed with feelings and a world so mysterious that you want to explore to know why things are the way they are.
The best of this novel in my opinion is the writing about the Dao, so poetic, simple and yet gaves you foot for hours of thought, really
A bit rough around the edges but a must read
