सवेर्शां स्वागतम् ।

sarveshaam swaagatham (Welcome to all)


संस्कृ तं अत्यन्तं सरळा भाषा ।

samskrutham athyantha saraLaa bhaashaa (Sanskrit is a very simple language)


संस्कृ तेन संभाषणम् इतोिप सरळं ।

samkruthena sambhaashaNam ithopi saraLam (Conversing in Sanskrit is even easier)


वयम् सवेर् अिप सोल्पेन प्र्यथ्नेननित्य जीवने संकृ तस्य उपयोगं कतुम्

शक्नुम: ।

vayam sarve api solpena prayatnena nithya jeevane samskrutasya upayogam kartum shaknumaha

(All of us, with just a little effort, can use Sanskrit in our daily life)


आगच्छन्तु, वयं इदानीं संस्कृ त संभाषणस्य अभ्यासम् कुम: ।

aagachchantu, vayam idhaanneem samskrutha sambhaashanasya abhyaasam kurmaha

(Come, let us now practise Sanskrit convresation)


मम नाम भागवी ।

mama naama bhargavi (My name is Bhargavi )


भवत: नाम िकम् ? |bhavata: naama kim?

What is your name? (male) 


भवत्या: नाम िकम् ? | bhavatyaaha naama kim?

What is your name? (female)


उित्तष्ठतु ।

uththishTathu (Get up)


पृच्छतु । 

pruchchathu (ask)


 उत्तमं ।

uththamam (Good)


भवत: नाम अिभषेक: ।

bhavathaha naama abhishekaha (your name is Abhishek)


संस्कृ तेन कथम् पिरच्चय: करणीय: इित भवन्त: ज्ञातवन्त: ।

samskrutena katham parichchayaha karaNeeyaha iti bhavantaha gnyaathavanthaha

(Let us learn how to introduce [people] )


उित्तष्ठतु, आगच्छतु ।

uththishTathu, aagachchathu (Get up, come)


स: उदयन: । स: अरुण्कु मार: ।

saha udayanaha saha arunkumaaraha (He is Udayana; he is Arunkumar)


अिभनयं कु वन्तु । वदन्तु ।

abhinayam kurvanthu, vadhanthu (Act it out/mime and Say)


स: क: ? स: रामकृ ष्ण: ।

saha kaha? saha raamakrishNaha (who is he? He is Ramakrishna)


क: रामकृ ष्ण: ? स: रामकृ ष्ण: । 

kaha raamakrishnaha? saha raamakrishNaha (who is Ramakrishna? He is Ramakrishna)


सा िप्रया । एषा िप्रया ।

saa priyaa | eshaa priyaa (She is Priya [farther away]; she is Priya [nearby])


सा का ? का िप्रया ? सा िप्रया ।

saa kaa? kaa priyaa? saa priyaa | (who is she? who is Priya? She is Priya)


तत् फलं । तत् पुस्तकं ।

thath phalam thath pusthakam (That is a fruit; that is a book)

तत् कृष्ण फलकं ।

thath krishNa phalakam (that is a blackboard)


तत् िकम् ? एतत् िकम्?

thath kim ethath kim (what is that? what is this?)


िकम् फलम् ? एतत् पुस्तकं ।

kim phalam ? ethath pusthakam (what/which is the fruit? this is a book)


स: राम: । एष: कृष्ण: ।

saha raamaha eshaha krishNaha (That [he] is Rama; This [he]is Krishna)


स: क: ? एष: क: ?

saha kaha ? eshaha kaha? (Who is that? who is this?)


बहु सिमचनं ।

bahu samichinam (very well/good)


इदनीम् अहं एकं  एकं  वस्तु दशयािम । “एतत् िकं ” पृच्छािम । उत्तरं वदन्तु ।

 

idaaneem aham ekam ekam vasthu dharshayaami ethath kim pruchchaami uththaram vadhanthu

(Now, I am going to show/display item by item and ask

“What is this?” You answer.)


एतत् िकम्? तत् उपनेत्रम् ।

ethath kim? thath upanethram | (what is this? these are spectacles)


तत् कङ् कतम्।

thath kankatham (that is a comb/hair brush)


फे नकम्

phenakam (soap)


पणम्

parNam (leaf)

एष: क: ? स: करदीप: ।

eshaha kaha? saha karadeepaha | (what is this? this is a torch)


चशक:

chashakaha (glass/cup)


एषा का? सा घटी ।

eshaa kaa? saa ghatee | (what is this? That is a watch/ clock)


सा सरस्वती ।

saa saraswathi | (She is Saraswathi)


इदानीम् भवन्त: एकं  एकं  वस्तु दशयतु । “एतत् िकं " पृच्छतु । idhaaneem bhavanthaha ekam ekam vasthu darshayathu | ethath kim pruchchathu |

(Now, you [all] show me items [one by one]. Ask, “What is this?”)

ऎतावत् पयन्तं वयम् स: एष: सा एषा एतेषां शब्दानां अभ्यासं कृ तवन्त: । ethaavath paryantham vayam saha eshaha saa eshaa etheshaam shabhdhaanaam  abhyaasam kruthavanthaha |

(So long [until now] we practised these words: “saha eshaha saa eshaa”)


एतेषां उपयोग: कथं करणीय: एत्यिप ज्ञातवन्त: ।

etheshaam upayogaha katham karaNeeyaha ithyaapi gnyaathavanthaha | (we also learnt how to use these)


फलम् अिस्त । लेखनी नािस्त ।

phalam asthi | lekhanee naasthi | (Fruit is [here], pen isn’t)


जलम्

jalam (water)


धन स्यूत: अिस्त ।

dhana syuuthaha asthi | (Cash purse is [here])


कृष्ण फलकं अत्र अिस्त । .. तत्र अिस्त ।

krishNa phalakam athra asthi | … thathra asthi (black board is here… there)


राम: कुत्र अिस्त ?

raamaha kuthra asthi ? (Where is Rama?)


आसन्द: तत्र अिस्त ।

aasandhaha thathra asthi (Chair is there)


कण्ठ हार:

kaNTa haaraha (Necklace)


जविनका

javanikaa (curtain)


वायु: सव अिस्त ।

vaayuhu sarvathra asthi | (air is everywhere)


भगवान् सव अिस्त ।

bhagawaan sarvathra asthi | (God is everywhere)


जलम् अत्र नािस्त, अन्यत्र अिस्त ।

jalam athra nassthi, anyathra asthi | (water is not here, it’s elsewhere)


पुरुषा: एकत्र उपिवशिन्त।

purushaaha ekathra upavishanthi | (Men are present/ congregated in [this] single spot)


मिहला: एकत्र उपिवशिन्त ।

mahilaaha ekathra upavishanthi | (Women are present/ congregated in [this] single spot)


अत्र - तत्र ; कुत्र - सव ; अन्यत्र - एकत्र

athra - thathra ; kuthra - sarvathra ; anyathra – ekathra

(here - there; where - everywhere; elsewhere - in one spot)


इदं अहं वदािम । अिभनयं करोिम ।

idham aham vadhaami | abhinayam karomi | (I shall say this, I shall mime)


भवन्त: वदन्तु, अिभनयं कु वन्तु ।

bhavanthaha vadhantu, abhinayam kurvanthu | (You all say [repeat], act it out)


संस्कृ त सािहत्ये सुभािषतानां िनतरां वैिशष्ट्यं अिस्त ।

saMskrutha saahithye subhaashithaanaam nitharaam vaishishtyam asthi |

(Compared to Sanskrit literature, Sanskrit [eloquent/ benevolent] speech/saying is excessively/vastly superior )


सुष्टु भािषतम् सुभािषतं । उत्तम वचनं एव सुभािषतं ।

sushtu bhaashitham subhaashitham | uththama vachanam eva subhaashitham | (Celebrated/praised speech is ‘Subhaashitham.’ Excellent sayings alone qualify as Subhaashitham.)


अपार: जीवनानुभव: सुभािषतेश िहत: भवित ।

apaaraha jeevanaanubhavaha subhaashitheshu nihithaha bhavathi |

(Much life-centric lessons/experiences are held in Subhaashitham)


वयं इदानीम् एकं संस्कृ तं सुभािषतम् शृणुम: ।


vayam idhaneem ekam saMskrutham subhaashitham shruNumaha |

(We will now listen to a Sanskrit Subhaashitham)


उद्यमनैवसिध्यिन्त कायार्िण न मनोरथै:

udhyamanaiva sidhyanthi kaaryaaNi na manorathaihi (Only with effort actions/work succeed, not by desire alone)


निह सुप्तस्थ िसं हस्य प्रिवशिन्त मुखे मृगा: ।

nahi supthastha simhasya pravishanthi mukhe mrugaha

|(A deer will not enter the mouth of a sleeping lion)



वयम् इदानीम् सुभािषतम् शृतवन्त: तस्य अथ: एवं अिस्त ।

vayam idhaaneem subhashitham shruthavanthaha thasya arthaha evam asthi |

(We now listened to a ‘Subhaashitham.’ It’s meaning/ import is as follows)


मनुष्य: प्रयत्नम् न करोित चेत मिप फलम् नसिध्यित । के वलम्

इच्छा: सिन्त चेत् कायम् नसिध्यित ।

manushyaha prayathnam na karothi cheth, kimapi phalam na sidhyathi | kevalam ichchaaha santhi cheth kaaryam na sidhyathi |

(If people do not make efforts, no fruits will accrue. Just by wishing, work will not get done)


िसं ह: अध्यन्त बलवान् अिस्त । स: मृग राज: अिस्त । ततािप िसं ह: प्र्यत्नम्

करोितचेतेव आहारं प्राप्नोित ।

simhaha adhyantha balavaan asthi | saha mruga raajaha asthi | thathaapi simhaha prayathnam karothichetheva aahaaram prapnothi |()A lion is very powerful. It is the king of beast. Still, only if the lion puts in efforts does it get its food)


मृग: आगत्य स्वयं एव िसं हस्य मुखे न पतित । एवं एव प्रयत्नम् न कुम:र्

चेत्, िकिचतिप फलम् नसिध्यित ।

mrugaha aagathya svayam eva simhasya mukhe na pathathi | evam eva prayathnam na kurmaha cheth, kinchithapi phalam na sidhyathi |

(The deer does not come of its own accord and enter the lion’s mouth. Until one makes efforts, not even a bit of result can be derived)


वयम् अिप अवश्यम् प्रयत्नम् कुम ।

vayam api avashyam prayathnam kurmaha |

(We too must certainly put in efforts)


अहम् इदानीम् एकाम् कथां वदािम । लगु कथा, सरला कथा अिस्त । संस्कृ तेन कथा श्रवणेन, भाषाब्यास: शीघ्रम् भवित । भवन्त: सावदानेन कथां शृन्वन्तु ।

aham idhaaneem ekaam kathaam vadhaami | lagu kathaa saraLaa kathaa asthi | saMskruthena katha shravaNena, bhaashaabyaasaha sheegram bhavathi | bhavanthaha saavadhaanena kathaam shrunvanthu | (I will now narrate a story. It is a short, simple story. Listening to stories in Sanskrit results in quick learning/practice. You [all] hear the story carefully)

एक: काक: अिस्त । स: काक: तिषर् त: अिस्त । तस्य बहु िपपासा भवित । जलम् प्राप्तव्यं इित इच्छा भवित । काक: जलस्य अन्वेषणम् करोित । ekaha kaakaha asthi | saha kaakaha thrushithaha asthi |

(There was a crow. That crow was thirsty.)

thasya bahu pibaasaa bhavathi | jalam praapthavyam ithi ichchaa bhavathi | kaakaha jalasya anveshaNam karothi |

(It felt thirsty. It wished to get some water. The crow went searching for water)


अत्र पश्यित, तत्र पश्यित, सव पश्यित । कु त्रािप जलम् नािस्त । काक:

अग्रे, अग्रे गच्छित । दू रे एकं घटम् पश्यित । काक: बहु सन्तोष: भवित । athra pashyathi, thathra  pashyathi,  sarvathra pashyathi | kuthraapi jalam naasthi |

(It looked here, there, everywhere. But, water was nowhere)

kaakaha agre, agre gachchathi | dhuure ekam ghatam pashyathi | kaakaha bahu santhoshaha bhavathi | (The crow went further and further. In the distance, it saw a pot. The crow became very happy.)


स: घटस्य समीपं गच्छित । घटस्य उपिर उपिवशित । पश्यित । घटस्य जलम् अिस्त । िकन्तु, सोल्पं जलम् अिस्त । काक: जलम् पातुम् न शक्नोित ।

saha ghatasya sameepam gachchathi | ghatasya upari upavishathi | pashyathi | ghatasya jalam asthi | kinthu, solpam jalam asthi | kaakaha jalam paathum na shaknothi |

(It went near the pot, [it] sat on the pot’s top. It looked.

 

There is water in the pot. But, there is only a little water. The crow was unable to reach the water)


“िकम् करोिम?” इित िचन्तयित । स: काक: बुिद्धमान् अिस्त । स: अन्यत्र गच्छित, िशलाखण्डम् आनयित । घटे पूरयित । पुन: गच्छित,

िशलाखण्डम् आनयित, पूरयित ।

“kim karomi?” ithi chinthayathi | saha kaakaha budhdhimaan asthi | saha anyathra gachchathi, shilaakhandam aanayathi | ghate puurayathi | punaha gachchathi, shilaakhandam aanayathi, puurayathi | (“What shall I do?” thought [the crow]. That crow was clever. It went elsewhere, brought a stone. It filled the pot. It went again, got a stone and filled the pot)


एवम् एव बहु वारं करोित । जलं उपिर, उपिर आगच्छित । जलं बिह: आगच्छित । काकस्य बहु सन्तोष: भवित । स: जलम् बित । आनन्देन जलम् बित ।

evam eva bahu vaaram karothi | jalam upari, upari aagachchathi | jalam bahihi aagachchathi | kaakasya bahu santhoshaha bhavathi | saha jalam pibathi | aanandhena jalam pibathi |

(In this manner, [the crow] continued doing. The water came up, up. The water came close [to the crow’s reach]. The crow was very happy. It drank the water. It drank the water gladly.)

 

अनन्तरम् तत: दू रं गच्छित । काक: चतुर: अिस्त, खलु?

anantharam thathaha dhooram gachchathi | kaakaha chathuraha asthi, kalu ?

(Soon after, it went far away. The crow is clever, isn’t it?)


आम्, चतुर: अिस्त ।

aam, chathuraha asthi | (Yes, it is clever)


चतुर: काक: । chathuraha kaakaha | (Clever crow)
