Officials say debris from an Indian anti-satellite weapons test conductedearlier this week will likely burn up and 'vanish' in a matter of weeks, amidoutcry over its potential to the already pressing issue of space junk inEarth's vicinity.

Acting U.S. Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan said on Thursday heexpected debris from the destroyed satellite test to eventually burn up in theatmosphere instead of creating a lasting debris field that could threaten otherorbiting craft.
美国代理国防部长帕特里克·沙纳汉周四表示，他预计被摧毁卫星测试的碎片最终会在大气层中燃烧，而不是形成一个可能威胁其他轨道飞行器的持久碎片场。
The comments came after an estimation by India's top defense scientistthat the debris would burn up in about 45 days.

The Pentagon said on Wednesday the U.S. military´s Strategic Command wastracking more than 250 pieces of debris from India´s missile test and wouldissue close-approach notifications as required until the debris enters theEarth's atmosphere.

The official added that there was no information so far to cast doubt onthe claims made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
