重读《爱玛》丨晚期的奥斯汀成熟在哪里?
今天重读了《爱玛》。一方面,因为是重读,所以我在阅读时已对人物关系了然于胸,这使得我可以更集中精力去理解作者的处理而非故事本身;另一方面则是因为自己的理解能力要比年初时更上一层楼(相对来说),再加上不久前刚重读过《傲慢与偏见》,所以也就比以往更充分地理解了《爱玛》到底比《傲慢与偏见》成熟在哪些地方。需要声明的是,在我看来,《傲慢与偏见》是无瑕的,和奥斯汀的晚期作品相比,它只是不那么“成熟”(具体理由参见精读《傲慢与偏见》的专栏)。
《爱玛》成熟在哪里?正确的答案当然是:成熟在对各章各节、各段段落各词句的处理,但鉴于精力有限,只选择挑几个大的框架去粗略谈一下(《傲慢与偏见》中已有的优点不会再提)。
(1)文风
奥斯汀不仅挥别了虽然有趣但因不断反复而在阅读过程中逐渐显得单调的过度反讽,而且文章的幽默比以往要节制了许多。如果说《傲慢与偏见》的奥斯汀是在直白地给我们讲一个个精彩的笑话,那么《爱玛》则是一幕幕喜剧,角色们(主要是“爱玛”)依照自己的视角去思考、去说话、去行动,这是那么地合理,但因为读者掌握了更多信息,自作聪明的爱玛也就显得十分滑稽。概言之,幽默的不是某个单纯的段落,而是这些段落与之前段落的综合。
这种“信息差”的存在使得这部作品的幽默是作者与读者合力完成的,且不那么“直白”。不仅是奥斯汀,成熟期的作品相比早年的作品总是不那么“直白”(比如劳伦斯):一方面,太直白就将要表达的意思都讲尽了,反之则读者的思考和回味空间都更大;另一方面,直白的讲述使得读者仅是信息的接受者,而不直白的讲述会使得作品的效果经由作者和读者合力完成,令读者更花精力、更多付出,从而也就有了更深的体悟。
(2)人物
第一,爱玛的人物弧光真是令我惊艳。做错事——自己意识到(或被别人批评而意识到)做错事——改正,这种模式在作品中太常见了。它时常令人感到违和的原因之一在于人物转变得太快了,然而,就像俗话说的那样,本性难移,一下子就从恶变成善的处理方法实在不够有说服力。
奥斯汀是怎样做的呢?除了高超的技巧本身外(精力原因没法在此提及),人物设定也很重要:爱玛虽然有种种缺点,但她本质不坏,且非常聪明,这两点使得爱玛的转变本质上不单单是传统上的从恶到善,而是一个渐渐褪去无知的过程——这样就不会使得爱玛的转变太突兀,不会使道德说教感太强。
第二,爱玛是一个缺点很明显的角色,如何以这种角色为主角又不至在观感上太过令人厌烦?这是一个非常非常具有挑战性的工作。
奥斯汀详细剖析了爱玛对事物的分析和情感历程让读者(至少是我)深入到了爱玛的内心,从而觉得爱玛的缺点“情有可原”(拥有种种缺点的我们又何尝不是“情有可原”?),此其一;现实与幻想不一致所产生的喜剧效果冲淡了对爱玛行为的道德评价,此其二;爱玛不仅有许多缺点,同时也有很多优点(比如能客观认识到自己不喜欢的人的优点),所以她远非仅是毛姆所形容的“势利小人,在社会地位不如自己的人面前那副趾高气扬的样子无比讨厌”,此其三。
毛姆如此形容爱玛令我震惊,一个角色是令人喜欢还是惹人讨厌——我觉得这不该是一个大作家评判作品的方式。实际上,爱玛性格形成的原因有对父亲的继承(基因和家风)、年轻、因聪明而自负、自幼缺乏强有力的管教、被过度溺爱、经常被人奉承......等诸多因素,它们的合力使得爱玛的形象十分自然,且这些因素在文本中出现得也十分自然。此外如前所述,爱玛成长的过程也相当精妙。尽管爱玛是一个怎样的人很重要,但这只在奥斯汀如何刻画这样的“爱玛”这个问题下才有价值。
毛姆说:“我实在是对弗兰克·丘吉尔和简·费尔法克斯的爱恋提不起兴趣。”然而,这条恋爱线是重要的一环,因为爱玛(和丘吉尔)的爱慕虚荣和自负(不爱丘吉尔,却公然与丘吉尔调情)真正伤害到了深爱丘吉尔的简,如果只是调侃贝茨小姐那句话则不仅攻击力不够,而且因为只需一句道歉就能很容易化为玉帛——这两点综合使得调侃贝茨小姐的举动无法在功能上独自承担起令爱玛进行彻底自我反思的重任。
毛姆还说:“尽管贝茨小姐非常招人喜爱, 但花费在她身上的笔墨是否有点过多了?”如果他指的是那些冗长的对话,那么绝对不多——因为如果没有这些许许多多的无聊对话,爱玛揶揄贝茨小姐说话无聊就显得太平白无故了。贝茨小姐的对话冗长无聊,一点儿也不美,但这冗长却达到了“真”,敢写无聊的文字、敢写不讨喜的主角——这恰是奥斯汀的才华和勇气所在。
第三,《傲慢与偏见》中的感情线难点在于伊丽莎白对达西从讨厌到喜欢的转变,以及伊丽莎白的讨厌如何在达西求婚之前始终没被达西发觉。而这部作品的感情线难点在于爱玛心底喜欢奈特利,却始终没注意到自己的感情——注意,仅仅是没注意到,而不是不存在。奥斯汀的一个处理方式是当涉及奈特利相关的事情时(比如在有人说奈特利喜欢简的时候),一直聪明且比较冷静的爱玛会突然“炸毛”,或者说情绪很激动,而在涉及暧昧对象丘吉尔时,爱玛始终很冷静。因为爱情是冲动的、不理智的,所以最后爱玛对奈特利的情感觉醒仅仅是冰山下的火山终于彻底爆发了而已,一点儿都不突兀。
我喜欢这句话,它将爱玛的骄傲和情感都准确揭露了出来:
一个念头快得像利箭一样,在爱玛的脑海里一闪而过:奈特利先生跟谁结婚都不行,要结婚就非娶她爱玛不可!
It darted through her, with the speed of an arrow, that Mr. Knightley must marry no one but herself!
Ps:我发现奥斯汀比较喜欢写那种虚荣、喜欢漂亮小伙子并喜欢和他们暧昧,但不会对他们产生爱情的主角(《傲慢与偏见》和《爱玛》均是如此)。虽然读着不像“纯爱作”那样舒服,女主角也可能会被质疑有些“绿茶”,但喜欢漂亮异性和爱慕虚荣又恰是人之常情。奥斯汀喜欢的应该是那种文质兼备的人,单纯长得漂亮、行为优雅也许只配作为她主角们的暧昧对象。
(3)情节
这部的情节和《曼斯菲尔德庄园》比较类似,都是在前几章介绍众多人物以及他们之间的关系之后,人物们就自己动了起来。相比《傲慢与偏见》,人工痕迹比较少。精力原因,具体的情节发展历程就不一一点明了。
(4)文笔
太多太多的细节十分精彩,不一而足(比如“丘吉尔以为邮政犯错将信邮丢了,但实际上是他忘了将信寄出”呼应了之前说“邮政很伟大,几乎不出错”的对话)(尽可能注意到这些细节不仅需要观察力,还需要记忆力)。又加上太过琐碎无法全部提及,所以仅举两个文笔上更加成熟的例子吧。
第一章中少女的淡淡哀伤——那种客观来看不是什么大事,但因为年轻时的世界很小所以失去一个就几乎等于失去全部 & 敏感少女情怀,描写得十分精彩。这段文字虽然透着许多忧伤,但细究下来完全没有到撕心裂肺的程度、很适度,真是非常厉害。
令人难过的事——令人略感难过的事——终于降临了——但又绝非以令人不快的方式出现的。泰勒小姐结婚了。由于失去了泰勒小姐,爱玛第一次尝到了伤感的滋味。就在这位好友结婚的那天,爱玛第一次凄楚地坐在那里沉思了许久。婚礼结束后,新娘新郎都走了,吃饭时只剩下他们父女俩,不会有第三个人来为这漫长的夜晚活跃一下气氛。吃过晚饭后,父亲像往常一样睡觉去了,爱玛只得坐在那里琢磨自己的损失。
这桩婚事肯定能给她的朋友带来幸福。韦斯顿先生人品出众,家境优裕,年纪相当,举止优雅。爱玛一想起自己曾怀着慷慨无私的情谊,一直在尽心竭力地促成这门亲事,就不禁有些得意。不过,这件事让她一上午都感觉心里不是滋味。泰勒小姐一走,她每天将无时无刻不思念她。她回想起她以前的情意——十六年的情意和慈爱——从她五岁起,泰勒小姐就开始教导她,陪她玩耍——她安然无恙时,泰勒小姐尽量跟她形影不离,逗她开心——她每次生病时,泰勒小姐总要悉心照料她。她的这些情意真让她感激不尽。然而,伊莎贝拉出嫁后,就剩下她们两个相互做伴,七年来平等相待,推心置腹,回想起来倍加亲切,倍加温馨。泰勒小姐真是个难得的朋友和伙伴,又聪明又有见识,又能干又文静,懂得家里的规矩,事事都肯操心,尤其关心她爱玛,关心她的每一次欢乐,每一个心意。这是爱玛可以倾诉衷肠的一个人,对她一片真情,真让她无可挑剔。
她如何来忍受这一变化呢?诚然,她的朋友离她家不过半英里,可爱玛心里明白,住在半英里以外的韦斯顿太太跟住在她家的泰勒小姐相比,那差异可就大了。尽管她性情开朗,家庭条件优越,但她现在势必感到十分孤独。她非常爱她的父亲,但是父亲毕竟做不了她的伙伴。无论是正经交谈还是开开玩笑,父亲跟她总是话不投机。
伍德豪斯先生结婚较晚,他和爱玛因为年龄悬殊而造成的隔阂,由于他体质和习性的缘故,而变得越发严重。他一向体弱多病,加上既不用脑也不活动,还未到迟暮之年就已老态龙钟。虽说他不管走到哪里,人们都喜欢他心地慈善,性情和蔼,但是从来没有人夸赞他的天赋。
爱玛的姐姐出嫁的地方并不远,就在伦敦,离家只有十六英里,不过姐妹俩也不能天天来往。十月和十一月间,爱玛只得在哈特菲尔德熬过一个个漫长的夜晚,等到伊莎贝拉两口子带着孩子来过圣诞节时,家里才会热闹起来,她也才会高高兴兴地有人做伴。
Sorrow came"a gentle sorrow"but not at all in the shape of any disagreeable consciousness."Miss Taylor married. It was Miss Taylor's loss which first brought grief. It was on the wedding-day of this beloved friend that Emma first sat in mournful thought of any continuance. The wedding over, and the bride-people gone, her father and herself were left to dine together, with no prospect of a third to cheer a long evening. Her father composed himself to sleep after dinner, as usual, and she had then only to sit and think of what she had lost.
The event had every promise of happiness for her friend. Mr. Weston was a man of unexceptionable character, easy fortune, suitable age, and pleasant manners; and there was some satisfaction in considering with what self-denying, generous friendship she had always wished and promoted the match; but it was a black morning's work for her. The want of Miss Taylor would be felt every hour of every day. She recalled her past kindness" the kindness, the affection of sixteen years"how she had taught and how she had played with her from five years old"how she had devoted all her powers to attach and amuse her in health"and how nursed her through the various illnesses of childhood. A large debt of gratitude was owing here; but the intercourse of the last seven years, the equal footing and perfect unreserve which had soon followed Isabella's marriage, on their being left to each other, was yet a dearer, tenderer recollection. She had been a friend and companion such as few possessed: intelligent, well-informed, useful, gentle, knowing all the ways of the family, interested in all its concerns, and peculiarly interested in herself, in every pleasure, every scheme of hers"one to whom she could speak every thought as it arose, and who had such an affection for her as could never find fault.
How was she to bear the change?"It was true that her friend was going only half a mile from them; but Emma was aware that great must be the difference between a Mrs. Weston, only half a mile from them, and a Miss Taylor in the house; and with all her advantages, natural and domestic, she was now in great danger of suffering from intellectual solitude. She dearly loved her father, but he was no companion for her. He could not meet her in conversation, rational or playful.
The evil of the actual disparity in their ages "and Mr. Woodhouse had not married early" was much increased by his constitution and habits; for having been a valetudinarian all his life, without activity of mind or body, he was a much older man in ways than in years; and though everywhere beloved for the friendliness of his heart and his amiable temper, his talents could not have recommended him at any time.
Her sister, though comparatively but little removed by matrimony, being settled in London, only sixteen miles off, was much beyond her daily reach; and many a long October and November evening must be struggled through at Hartfield, before Christmas brought the next visit from Isabella and her husband, and their little children, to fill the house, and give her pleasant society again.
这段对话中暗藏的情意:
Emma was extremely gratified."They were interrupted by the bustle of Mr. Weston calling on every body to begin dancing again.
"Come Miss Woodhouse, Miss Otway, Miss Fairfax, what are you all doing?"Come Emma, set your companions the example. Every body is lazy! Every body is asleep!"
"I am ready," said Emma,"whenever I am wanted."
"Whom are you going to dance with?" asked Mr. Knightley.
She hesitated a moment, and then replied,"With you, if you will ask me."
"Will you?" said he, offering his hand.
"Indeed I will. You have shewn that you can dance, and you know we are not really so much brother and sister as to make it at all improper."
"Brother and sister! No, indeed."
爱玛高兴极了。这时韦斯顿先生嚷嚷着催大家再跳舞,打断了他们的谈话。
“来,伍德豪斯小姐,奥特维小姐,费尔法克斯小姐,你们都在干什么呀?来,爱玛,给你的伙伴带个头。个个都懒洋洋的!个个都像睡着了似的!”
“什么时候要我跳,”爱玛说,“我都乐意从命。”
“你准备跟谁跳呢?”奈特利先生问。
爱玛迟疑了一下,随后答道:“你要是邀我的话,就跟你跳。”
“是吗?”奈特利先生说罢,伸出了手。
“当然啦。你已经证明你能跳舞,再说你也知道我们并不是亲兄妹,在一起跳舞没什么不合适的。”
“兄妹!当然不是。”
还有一个虽然算不得文笔更加成熟,但我比较喜欢的例子,蕴含在这句话中的傲慢、撒娇(傲娇?)和幸福感:
"Do you dare say this?" cried Mr. Knightley. "Do you dare to suppose me so great a blockhead, as not to know what a man is talking of?"What do you deserve?"
"Oh! I always deserve the best treatment, because I never put up with any other......”
“你敢说这话?”奈特利先生大声嚷道。“你敢把我当成个大傻瓜,连别人说的话都听不明白吗?你该得到什么样的报应啊?”
“啊!我总是应该得到最好的报应,因为我从来不能容忍别的......”
这部作品的优点很多,想说得更细致就必须几万字起步了,要早起赶飞机,于是暂且说到这里。
