DORIAN_ a New Musical (2019 Staged Reading)

DORIAN is a new musical theater work based on Oscar Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Gray"
It was workshopped, rehearsed and performed in collaboration with the West Virginia University School of Theatre and Dance.
The show contains adult themes and content, including minor violence and language, that may be unsuitable for younger viewers.

(Narrator)Dorian Gray was the epitome of the struggling artist. A trope he had to desperately escape.
While he prided himself on his youthful charm and well-known attractiveness,
Dorian remained anxious, not knowing if his career as an artist would ever take off.
But one day, Dorian got his shot. He landed a meeting with Henry Callahan;
a famous and well-to-do commissioner of only the finest works for his art gallery in downtown Manhattan.
This was it. This was Dorian's ticket to escape...

(Dorian)
14 years and now my shot is here and now and open
It takes a risker and a chancer to get the final closing
It's opportunity and financial stability
It's time to put the gear in high ignition
It isn't fame unless you risk it all and build those bridges
Make dreams reality, take pride in all those countless wishes
There's something coming, something big and Jesus, I can feel it
I'll take a high card from the deck of life and God will deal it
I can say goodbye to late rent and crappy phones
No more scraping by to pay those loans
They'll be house-holding my name and I'll be drowning in fame!
This is my ticket to escape!
My future's starting to take shape!
Think of what they'll say about Dorian Gray...
Nothing's certain, nothing's promised, till you get up closer
Success is limited, and I'm a freakin' overdoser
Look it in the face, look it in the eyes, don't let it get away now
Take it by the wheel and now you're cruising towards the life you wanted
There's nothing lost, if nothing's gained and trust me, there is no question
And my career is almost there,
I'll make a good impression
There's no confession of obsession,
I'm not taking questions
So sit, take notes 'cuz my new class
on fame is now in session!
Can I say goodbye to this iife of struggling by?
Time to trade this look for fancy black ties!
This is my new take on a life that I'll make
This is my ticket to escape!
This is my reason to create!
And I'll show them all this was always my fate!
Come one, come all, and...
Witness my rise to success and...
(Ensemble)Come one, come all, and...
Witness his rise to success, and...
Come one, come all, and...
Witness his success, and...
Come one, come all, and...
He's only just begun, and...
Come one, come all, and...
(Dorian)Come one, come all
(Ensemble)Witness his success, and...
(Dorian)Oh...!
(Ensemble)Come one, come all, and...
He's only just begun, and...
(Dorian)I've only just begun!
(Dorian)This is my ticket to escape!
(Ensemble)Dorian...!
(Dorian)My future's starting to take shape!
(Dorian/Ensemble)Think of what they'll say... Think of what they'll say
(Dorian)I said:
(Dorian/Ensemble)Think of what they'll say... Think of what they'll say
(Dorian)I said:
(Dorian/Ensemble)Think of what they'll say!
(Dorian)About Dorian Gray!

(Narrator)We open on a night club, a couple of tables and chairs here and there.
(Narrator)People talking, laughing and drinking,
including Dorian's old art professor and mentor Basil Hallward, and her friend, Henry Callahan
(Basil)Dorian! Over here, over here!
(Henry)Is this him?
(Basil)Yes! Dorian, Henry, Dorian.
(Henry)So this is the elusive artist Basil has been telling me about the better part of an hour... what a pleasure!
(Dorian)The pleasure is all mine, Mr.
(Henry)Oh, Henry, just call me Henry
(Henry)Do you want a drink?
(Dorian)Gin and tonic, please.
(Henry)excellent!
(Henry)A gin and tonic for a one Mr. Dorian Gray...on my tab!
(Henry)I did some research on you and found your website. You are quite the experimentalist, my friend.
(Basil)Yes, that's one word for it.
(Henry)So, tell me about yourself, Dorian. how doesn a gorgeous, young man such as yourself end up being friends with someone like that?
(Dorian)Well, I knew them as Professor Hallward for four years.
(Dorian)Got my Bachelor's in Art Design from NYU and here I am.
(Henry)No Master's degree? No Graduate education?
(Dorian)Couldn't afford it.
(Basil)Well, you might have if you kept in touch with-
(Dorian)My parents never cared about my education, I doubt they would have shelled out the money for two more years in school...
(Henry)Oh, family drama! Well, you're not getting any younger Dorian, so what do you plan on doing for yourself?
(Dorian)I'm only 27.
(Henry)My point exactly!
(Waitress)Gin and tonic, Sir.
(Henry)Looks fade my friend!
(Henry)You will not be able to charm the handsome bartender, or an equally handsome gallerist into free drinks forever!
(Henry)I would know I was just like you! Of course, I found my trade in showcasing and elevating the talent and work of others.
(Henry) Found it much more feasible as I was a piss-poor sculpture artist back in the day, I'm afraid.
(Basil)Dorian is interested in submitting some of his work for your gallery, Henry.
(Henry)A sculpture?
(Dorian)A self-portrait.
(Henry)A self-portrait?
(Henry)Well to be perfectly honest, I'm not really in the market for self-portraits as of this moment,
(Henry)especially not for this upcoming exhibition.
(Dorian)I assure you, if you just give me a chance-
(Henry)You didn't let me finish!
(Henry)it's not the usual kind of stuff I commission... but...
(Henry)A self-portrait of that gorgeous face? A permanent snapshot of youth?
(Henry)Patrons down the block!
(Dorian)Really?
(Henry)Art galleries attract certain demographics.
(Henry)Mine attract the kind of people who appreciate the longevity of art.
(Basil)Meaning they're old...
(Henry)Well, yes. but...
(Henry)a portrait of that handsome visage?
(Henry)The epitome of youth, ugh!
(Henry)people love that kind of stuff!
(Dorian)it is a bit depressing, though.
(Henry)how so?
(Dorian)a version of your younger self living on, while you age and grow old? Not a very happy reminder, is it?
(Henry)I suppose. though I guess we try not to think about it, don't we?
(Dorian)I suppose.
(Henry)So...Hypothetically...
(Henry)how long would it take for you to give me
a self-portrait of that glorious face?
(Henry)Hypothetically.
(Dorian)Well, it depends. Materials?
(Henry)Oil.
(Dorian)Hm.old-fashioned. Dimensions?
(Henry)Massive!
(Dorian)framing?
(Henry)undoubtedly.
(Dorian)well, it'll take some funds for materials and the framing.
(Dorian)And of course, I would need time to let the oil dry periodically, but...
(Dorian)I could have it done in as little as eight months.
(Henry)you have six.
(Dorian)Pardon?
(Henry)six months.
(Henry)I've paid for all of your materials. My assistant will send you over all the additional details.
(Henry)contracts, minutiae and whatnot.
(Henry)You get that portrait to me in six month's time and your face will be the very first thing my patrons see when they walk into my new exhibition.
(Henry)A face that they will not soon forget...
(Dorian)Wow, thank you, Mr.-
(Dorian)Thank you, Henry. I won't let you down. Thank you.
(Emcee)Ladies and Gentlemen!
(Emcee)May I introduce to you all our newest addition to the stage...
(Emcee)Miss Sybil Vane!

(Sybil)It's a cautionary tale...
The one that never fails...
That romance is something you can buy...
If it wasn 't for today...
You'd never have to say that consent
Is something that's required
So, open up your minds
but don t believe your eyes,
'cuz romance is my disguise!
[Applause]
Your violent silence, your watchful gaze
Condescension in countless ways
Well, It's easy to pretend
That society's on the mend!
But this is the end, my friend
If it's true that times are changing
why do I get the lower waging?
Well, it's easy to pretend
that society's on the mend
But never again will I pretend that this isn't the end
This is the end, you can't believe your eyes
Time doesn't stop for you and I
Conversation, humiliation,
Changing, mansplaining, and rearranging
Craving, raging, overstating,
Late in the game and body shaming
A tale of caution that no one buys
An encore of a sweeter reprise
Time doesn't care for heartless lies
This is the end, you have to realize,
Time doesn't care if you survive
This is the test, dont think that you can rest
Gentlemen, please, hold your applause
It's a cautionary tale...
The one that never fails...
That success is something you can earn
It's a matter of opinion,
a carefully planned decision,
Life is a business you must learn...
So throw away the dice
I'll only say it twice
Romance is my disguise!

(Dorian)She's a vision!
(Henry)If you go for that sort of thing...
(Dorian)What thing?
(Henry)Nightclub singers.
(Basil)I think we'd better go.
(Basil)I think somebody wants to make an introduction.
(Henry)Perhaps you're right. Well, Dorian, as I said:
(Henry)six months.
(Henry)don't let me down
(Henry)Keep in touch.
(Dorian)Of course, yes. Thank you, Henry.
(Dorian)Thank you.
(Dorian)Excuse me...
(Dorian)I wanted to say that was an amazing performance.
(Dorian)I really really enjoy it.
(Sybil)You did?
(Dorian)Surprised?
(Sybil)Most men make snide comments about that particular song.
(Sybil)Depends on the audience, I guess.
(Dorian)Seems like most of them are probably jealous.
(Dorian)Can I get you a drink...?
(Sybil)Sybil
(Dorian)Dorian Gray.
(Dorian)A pleasure
(Dorian)Please.
(Dorian)You know that voice of yours sounds a little out of place for the nightclub scene.
(Dorian)Did you study somewhere?
(Sybil)Just self-taught, mostly
(Sybil)I mean, I've done auditions here and there but...
(Sybil)none of them have planned out the way I wanted them to.
(Sybil)And this pays the bills,so...it can be fun
(Dorian)I think you should keep trying.
(Dorian)This is hardly an audience to appreciate the kind of talent you have.
(Sybil)I think you're not giving yourself enough credit.
(Dorian)Well, I'm an artist so I don't know too much about music.
(Sybil)Oh, so you're the stuffy Manhanttan artist type?
(Dorian)Is that your impression of me?
(Sybil)Well, we've been talking for barely a minute.
(Sybil)I feel like I'm allowed to make baseless assumption about you.
(Dorian)that's fair
(Dorian)I actually just got some of my art commissioned by THE Henry Callahan just now.
(Sybil)Who?
(Dorian)he's a big deal!
(Sybil)I'm sure he is.
(Sybil)What did he commission from you?
(Dorian)I almost don't want to say...
(Sybil)Oh, it's a secret?
(Dorian)of sorts.
(Dorian)I don't want to give it away
(Sybil)Hmm. So, do you have to go and get it, or...?
(Dorian)Well it's not done yet.
(Dorian)I mean, I haven't started it...yet.
(Sybil)Got it.
(Waitress)Gin and tonic. Ma'am.
(Dorian)Can I ask you something?
(Sybil)Go for it.
(Dorian)I know we've known each other for literally two minutes, now, but...
(Dorian)do you want to go out for drinks somethime?
(Sybil)Well, isn't that what we're doing right now?
(Dorian)Maybe perhaps a coffee? Or even dinner?
(Sybil)I think that's a record for how quick someone has asked me out.
(Sybil)And the drinks just got here!
(Dorian)Well, no point in wasting time, is there?
(Sybil)Look...
(Sybil)I will admit that you're not like most guys that I meet here,Dorian
(Sybil)And I'm flattered.
(Sybil)But I'm not looking for anything right now.
(Dorian)I sense a story there.
(Sybil)a story I don't care to get into, I'm afraid
(Dorian)Interesting...
(Dorian)Well, I suppose it doesn't matter why.
(Dorian)Though most people can't seem to stay away.
(Dorian)I've got to get going. No rest for the weary.
(Sybil)Well, thank you for the free drinks, Mr. Gray.
(Dorian)And thank you... for the wonderful company.
