The ideal trainee, Astrid embodies the ultimate combination of focus, energy, competitiveness, and skill. She also happens to have a highly attuned sense of pride in her own work, and is quick to attack anyone not pulling their own weight.
Like Hiccup, Astrid has done alot of growing up during the development of this film, but she has tried on far more hairstyles than her male counterpart ever did. "When we gave her two braids, one on each side of her head, it was fun in design but not for animation, especially as sheturned to look another way and hitother characters," recalls Character Designer Nicolas Marlet. Indeed, she's had a varied number of braids on her head, but anything more than the single one she now sports seemsa distraction from her true, athletic, focused self.
"Astrid represents motivation: Hiccup wants to become a true Viking to impress this girl as wellas ( more subconsciously ) his father, and she herself is the most motivated Viking trainee of the group," notesHead of Story Alessandro Carloni.
