Australia has almost eliminated the coronavirus — by putting faith in science
The nation of 26 million is close to eliminating community tranSmission of the coronavirus, having defeated a second wave just as infections surge again in Europe and the United States.
No cases were reported on the island continent Thursday, and only seven since Saturday, besides travelers in hotel quarantine. Eighteen patients are hospitalized with covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. One is in an intensive care unit. Melbourne, the main hotbed of Australia's outbreak which recently emerged from lockdown, has not reported a case since Oct. 30.

"I never thought we would really get to zero, which is amazing," said Sharon Lewin, the Melbourne-based director of the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, which provided forecasts in February that formed the basis of the Australian government's response. "I've been going out nonstop, booking restaurants, shopping, getting my nails done and my hair cut."
As North America, Europe, India, Brazil and other regions and countries struggle to bring tens of thousands of daily infections under control, Australia provides a real-time road map for democracies to manage the pandemic. Its experience, along with New Zealand's, also shows that success in containing the virus isn't limited to East Asian states.

Perhaps most importantly, though, leaders from across the ideological spectrum persuaded Australians to take the pandemic seriously early on and prepared them to give up civil liberties they had never lost before, even during two world wars.

"Regardless of who you vote for, most Australians would agree their leaders have a real care for their constituents and a following of science," McLaws said. "I think that helped dramatically."

It's seasonality. Just like in Europe we nearly eliminated it in the summer. And in northern USA the same. Tropical places not so much.
Lockdowns have nothing to do with it.
Paulkaz
That wouldn’t explain why hot India and tropical Brazil have drastic infection rates? Europe and USA didn’t lockdown enough to eliminate the virus. It took Victoria 3 months of hard oppressive restraint to succeed. An amazing effort that saved the rest of us Australians.

The facts prove otherwise. We were in hard lockdown right throughout the bitter cold of winter (yes it gets cold in the southern states of Aus!). Lockdown works. It saved lives. Australia is proof.

Elizabeth Grey
Hmmm... I lived it. And I think you are wrong. Lockdowns work - If you do them and don't keep sneaking out to break the rules. We pretty much did stay home & only went out for the basics of exercise, food & care giving. We eliminated in the winter... We did it twice in Victoria.

We in Australia have not yet experienced it in Summer. Started in Autumn, went to through winter spring.
Brazil which is pretty warm all year round had a high rate of cases.

and your qualifications on epidemiology, virology, public health and chronic diseases come from where?
Michelle Scragg
It's not summer in Australia, it's Spring. Lockdowns, isolation, hygiene, distancing, all contribute to why we are doing so well...oh and we seem to be mostly a bit more intelligent

Climate plays a Small part. Parts of Australia (TaSmania) get as cold as some European countries. The main advantage Australia has is strong borders & relative population density

I’ll introduce you to an Australian saying: “Yeaaaaah-nah.”
We got this down with rules, faith in science and a lotta resilience WELL before the weather changed.
Not to mention the latency of the virus meant we had it nailed down, what, about 2 weeks before cases hit zero.

Temlei
Mate I am in Australian and this ain't even close to summer. Please learn more about the world

What has happened in Australia has only happened due to closure of international borders & quarantining of every person who steps onto our soil. Victoria screwed up because we have a corrupt fascist govt here & they purposefully created a 'second wave'.

Greg Latham
I seem to remember recently that hundreds of passengers were allowed to disembark from a covid19 riddled passenger liner called the Ruby Princess.
So much for the "quarantining of every person who steps on to our soil.

We were in strict lockdown for months, wear masks & have restrictions on how many people we’re allowed in our home. All that said, I’m super grateful not to be living in fear Covid every time I leave the house now. We can go out and enjoy the reward of our hard work in peace
Tick
And you have hit the nail on the head. The economy will fare much better if people don’t fear having to leave their house. Short term pain for long term gain.
Sue Jay
We did. It was hard but we put people and science first. We just came thru our winter and now 0 cases because we did the right thing.

The inclination of the Federal Gov vs the State Gov’s meant Australia got the balance between health and economy right. It’s a pity miSmanagement in Victoria let the rest of the country down.

We did it with no help from our useless Prime Minister who pushed to stay open. Instead we listened to ou state Premier and Chief Health Officer who put health before dollars.
Kenneth Ng Mendez
Hahaha health before dollar you think those fines are for health. Nope, they’re taxes so politicians can get more money. Government always wins and they’re getting more money.

You mean by closing our borders and locking us in our houses.
Our government has gone into so much debt our grandchildren will be paying it off.
Geometric
No thanks to our Prime Minister Scott Morrison and his right-wing Federal Government.
The Victorian State Premier,
saved Australia, despite the efforts of the Federal Government, Conservative Politicians & the Rupert Murdoch dominated media to deny the science.

For those saying ‘at what cost’, do you not realise it means we can open up our economy sooner and close to 100% giving us a net benefit vs the rest of the world. We went hard, quickly so we can open up hard and quickly.
Rhiannon Smith
Our Prime Minister and federal govt was completely useless and actively tried to hinder suppression efforts. The victory goes to the state premiers/govts who got control and kept control. We are only here because of them, as well as the work of citizens over months and months.

Its wasn’t the federal govt that help control the virus apart from-closing all incoming and outgoing travel. the credit should goto the state leaders especially Dan Andrews from Victoria.

Sher Campbell
It was the work done by the Premiers of the States. The Right Wing Federal Government criticised from the sidelines aided and abetted by the Murdoch Press. Thank goodness we believe in science and not snake oil saleSman.

This Up pointing backhand indexUp pointing backhand indexUp pointing backhand indexAll Australia is indebted to Dan Andrews & his team for holding course despite Murdoch Press and our Prime Minister and Treasurer efforts to undermine. Lets ask those fellows about (avoidable) aged care home deaths.

NO thanks to our federal govt who wr worse than useless. All thanks in Australia go to our fabulous state Premiers (like your Governors) who followed the scientist's recommendations and the vast majority of people saw sense and followed the directives.
Eric Leotta
With all the comments on here bagging the feds I wonder how far the states would have gone without all the support packages the federal government supplied? State premiers were able to do what they did riding on the shoulders of the federal government.
Eric Neil Koenig
And they've eliminated mass shootings by buying back people's guns and making it tougher to get their hands on one so one needs a permit to use one and it can only be temporary.

Yep. Feel very safe sending the kids to school here and we are pretty much over the coronavirus here. Been a tough year but it’s paid off dividends!!

No thanks to the conservative Australian Fedetal Government.the credit must go the States..in particular Victoria.

Carolyn Paynting
It was our state governments who saved us. The federal government was trying to bully them into opening up to save the economy. Our state Premiers chose to save our lives instead.
The federal government closed the international border and gave financial support.

We are coming into summer. Wait until we open the borders and winter is upon us. The WuFlu will be back. Being holed up in Victoria, I am sick of living like I have leprosy. This is not living!
RelsBels
We are indebted to our Premiers (Governors in US) & state govts who listened to the science & took measures to protect us. The Prime Minister & the fed govt did nothing but try to discredit them & create division.

Wayne Griffin
We are lucky we are an island, we trust our governments, we are educated, we can be compliant with rules and regulations and we are inclusive. Only countries with general compliance with rules are successful.

We did what we needed to at the start and we did well. My state had 6 deaths total. My life pretty much went back to normal within about three months of the start.

Don’t give Morrison and Hunt any credit. Thank the state premiers that stood their ground and refused to be bullied by the PM and his ministers trying to undermine their efforts.

Jonathon Nunan
It is super important to understand that it was due to the pro activiSm and stead fastness of the state governments, that Australia got on top of Covid. The federal government can take little, if any real credit.
