There’s a fairly common viewpoint that I see often on Chinese forums, that causes a lot of fans there to actually commonly cheer for western teams at internationals - the idea that if the gap gets larger then the entire international league esports ecosystem will collapse since EU and NA fans would lose interest.

It absolutely is true I’ve seen so many Na and Eu fans say that they’ve just stopped watching because they know the end result is gonna be the same Korea or china just take the win.

I'm not sure if there are actual numbers to prove this, but I highly doubt this was the case. It's been known for years that China contributes a large part of Worlds viewership and the Worlds viewer numbers were steadily growing even before 2018.

Thing is, that data only shows that there was a huge spike in LPL interest in 2018, which makes sense since it was the first time China won Worlds. I wasn't disputing the spike in interest after 2018, in fact I would be surprised if it wasn't the case.

What I doubt is that interest in the LPL was actively falling off prior to 2018 like what's happening to LCS/LEC now. Although there's no data from before 2017, given that the 2017 numbers are comparable to the 2022/2023 numbers, it suggests that interest in the LPL was still at a decent level then.

I'm one of those players who watches worlds every year but only until the last NA and EU teams are eliminated. Once that happens I MIGHT watch the finals, but I'm more likely to just watch some highlights and get the cliffnotes on what happened after the fact. Even if NA and EU get demolished this year I'm sure I will watch worlds next year anyway, but only until all the western teams get eliminated again.

I don’t even watch NA or EU regular splits. I want to see quality league games and I’m not gonna see the best plays unless I watch LCK and LPL. That also makes me more in touch with who’s actually got a shot at upper bracket at worlds.

Same here. I watch nearly all of LCK live and then some LPL. I'm not overly interested in watching LCS (I am in the US) or LEC so much. The quality of play is lower and frankly the casting isn't anything to brag about aside from a few casters here and there. Also, LCK actually has high enough quality content between games that I watch it and enjoy it. LCS often seems to target an audience of pre-teens with their skits and activities.

Each to their days own, I completely understand people who love lpl cause it’s a blood bath. I pefer lck mainly cause of I find it more relaxing but can also have some lpl games ( any kt vs t1 series)

I really loved how LPL teams play, good teams with actual draft. LCK teams you already know what teams are gonna pick before the match even starts.

Last year was such a dissapointment, I really have zero expectations of any western team. Not even gonna meme around it, just don't care.

I personally stopped watching NA and EU games this year. Even the best teams aren’t super interesting save for some EU rivalry. The matches themselves also seem slower and more dull compared to LCK and LPL.

Problem is that I don’t feel like they went down kicking. They just qualify, go for a vacation, do some scrim then go home after play in/group stage/quarter. There’s no fighting in them to hope that they would be able to make it deeper within a few years, all that they gives me is just “welp, another year of NA and EU as per usual”

I haven't watched 2023 worlds and I already know the results for NA and EU regions; 1-3 losses all around. I won't be watching it to cheer neither region but to watch good players play league.

Its always been this wide. We havent won since 2011 except once with G2. Even at Korea and China's weakest, Europe still barely won once with their best team ever. It will never shrink. Europe has always been the historic # 3 reigon. I've been arguing it since 2014 and idiots who thought eu was better or just as good as china back then.
