collateral

collateral的词源是从中世纪拉丁语collaterālis，再从拉丁语col- “一起”和latus “侧面”，意思是“并行的，伴随的”。

记忆collateral这个词的一个方法是把它和lateral联系起来，想象两条平行线或者两个侧面相连。

collateral有几个含义：

1. 并行的，伴随的；例如：collateral veins 并行静脉

2. 间接的，附属的；例如：collateral damage 附带损害
