Périgord is one of the oldest regions in France. Especially in Dordogne, where there are many well-preserved medieval castles, one can easily imagine a princess or a knight. It was during the reign of Charlemagne in 778 that the area was established as a county. In the centuries that followed, the territory suffered the destruction of time: in the 14th century, during the Hundred Years' War, Castelnaud Castle and most of its departments were taken by the British. In 1442, the French won the war, and the castle was returned to the Camon family who had owned it since 1368.
Castelnaud Castle belongs to the village of Castelnaud-la-Chapelle and was listed as a historical monument in 1966. It overlooks the Dordogne Valley and offers a magnificent panoramic view of the Marqueyssac gardens and the villages of Roque-Gageac and Beynac. The building is one of the most iconic buildings in the medieval war. It also has everything you want, including a fortified castle with dungeons, mechanized buildings and lots of traps! Today, the castle has been converted into a medieval war museum, where you can admire the massive reconstruction of artillery, as well as an astonishing number of weapons and armors.
