As the knight came thundering towards them,they saw that he was huge beyond mortal size and mounted upon a horse size of a small elephant.When they saw this the damsel and the dwarf fled,leaving the parrot behind,at which the bird began to cry out to King Arthur to open his cage and set him free.But Arthur merely laughed and reminded the bird of the song it had but lately sung to him concerning honour.Then he prepared to defend himself against the huge knight.

As you may expect,this was a mighty battle,for the gaint knight was a terrible foe and King Arthur was still young and untried.But he fought bravely and with skill,and youth was on his side,so that he began to force the huge creature back before him and to inflict several great wounds upon him.It amazed the king that,whenever he stuck the knight on his armor,no matter if it was upon the shield or the helm or the leg,blood gushed force as if from a far deeper wound.Finally,he struck several blows which brought the huge fellow to his knees and with all the force in his body King Arthur cut off the man's right arm,which still held his sword.

Then the knight gave force a great roar and staggered back and forth,crying out and fountaining blood on every side.King Arthur noticed that wherever the blood fell the earth smoked as if it were burning.

Arthur stood in awe at the giant's death throes,during which he felled trees and gouged great trenches in the earth.But at last he lay still,and the king approached to examine the body.There he found a most marvelous and terrible thing.For when he tried to remove the fallen knight's helm,he found it to be all of a piece with the body,and indeed everything,armour,helm,even the weapons he carried,were all of flesh and bone.And the flesh was hot to the touch,though beginning to cool,and it was hard to dry like a snake.
