In the age of Bandcamp, “prolific” has almost become a genre in and of itself. Car Seat Headrest’s Will Toledo has certainly been assigned that label due to his 11 full-length self-releases. As Car Seat Headrest, Toledo's extreme rate of production is matched in scope by his vast absorption of inspirations, and perhaps that is what “prolific” should mean in 2016. Toledo is a disciple of Michael Stipe who grew up studying the greats of Matador Records, only to get signed to that very label, and he weaves these influences into his own music all while avoiding copycat territory.

“Vincent” is from Car Seat Headrest’s second Matador release, Teens of Denial, their first featuring completely new material. The songs may be fresh, but the almost eight-minute “Vincent” still features many of the themes explored throughout the Car Seat Headrest discography: depression, “pure sadism,” the simultaneous desire to occupy and escape spaces both physical and mental, and Toledo’s encyclopedic dissection of himself and his surroundings. After a spacey, nearly three-minute intro, Toledo launches into a stream-of-conscious discourse: “If I’m being honest with myself/ I haven’t been honest with myself,” he murmurs. After he admits he is just “in it for the beatings,” that paradox makes perfect sense.
