Introdution 《How to Read Darwin》
Structure
Why should we read Darwin?
His influence can be traced into all corners of modern culture - not just biology, but in philosophy, the human sciences, theology, software engineering, literature and the plastic arts.
It's easy to read.
The structure of this book
The Origin of Species
The Descent of Man
The Expressions of the Emotions
How to read it?
My preferred approach follows the philosopher and historian R.G. Collingwood, who suggested we should aim to understand the questions that people asked. The questions they had in mind may not be exxplicit, but if you can puzzle them oyt, the rest of their work tends to make more sense.
Collingwood's method forces us to be active readers, looking for sense in the text, rather than reading passively and hoping to absorb something.
……
It therefore makes more sense for most of us to understand Darwin's evolutionary ideas in genetic terms rather than in terms of Darwin's own theories of inheritance.
pose himself/herself a question: 某人给自己提出了一个问题,这个可能也有点书面语。
make sense: 平时语境中也可以用(That makes more sense.) 出自:It therefore makes more sense for most of us to understand Darwin's evolutionary ideas in genetic terms rather than in terms of Darwin's own theories of inheritance.
easy to read --> readable
has one huge advantage over something: 作比较的时候可以用
In this way, we can...
