DBCO-PEG-COOH, the terminal carboxylic acid can react with the primary amine group in the presence of an activator (such as EDC or HATU) to form a stable amide bond. DBCO click chemistry can operate in aqueous buffer solution or in organic solvent depending on the nature of substrate molecules. Reagents with PEG arms will increase the hydrophilicity of compounds. Functionalized polyethylene glycol can also be used to modify proteins, peptides and materials.
