当晚香玉于17世纪从南美和亚洲首次传入欧洲时，它的名字引起了相当大的混淆，尽管它的简单意思是“从块茎或球茎生长的花”。异国情调的晚香玉，因其诱人的香味和被认为是炫耀的性感外观，引起了很大的轰动。法国王后 玛丽·安托瓦内 特命令她的香水师为她创造一种专供她使用的诱人的香气。在19世纪的俄罗斯，这种花是禁止 宫廷皇室以外的任何人使用的。在马来西亚，晚香玉被称为“夜之情妇”。

When the Tuberose was first brought to Europe from South America and Asia in the 17th century, its name caused considerable confusion, though it simply means a “flower that grows from a Tuber, or bulb.”The exotic Tuberose caused an even bigger stir for its provocative fragrance and its voluptuous appearance that was considered ostentatious. Marie Antoinette commanded her perfumers to create an alluring scent from the flower exclusively for her. In 19th century Russia, the flower was forbidden to anyone outside of the Imperial Court. In Malaysia the Tuberose is known as “the mistress of the night”.
