The peony borrows its name from Paeon, the legendary physician to the gods at Mount Olympus. In ancient China, the handsome flower was designated the “King of Flowers”. Throughout the world, the sweet-scented flower is considered an omen of good fortune, health and longevity, and prosperity. Some peony plants are said to live for as long as one hundred years. The generous flowers are also associated with fairy mischief as well as compassion.
