8. Visualizing Your Story---1-1.Lesson Overview

Welcome to our final lesson number eight. So what we will be doing in this lesson, we’ll be going back to our abstract composition, picking up a few frames, refining those sketches,

8. Visualizing Your Story---1-2.Color in Photoshop 3D

Let’s talk about color a bit right? Color is true based upon a slight, learning a master color is another life time challenge.

That’s why I felt like giving you color last lecture could be a good things to do. Because before I felt that we need to concentrate on creating good graphic design, which Is a very solid fundamental knowledge or story telling,

and color is another very strong storytelling element. it complements the graphic design that we were trying to learn previous eight lesson.

And I think this is a good time now, to show you some color basics. And once again, teaching color is really needs another eight week course.

But I will be trying to show you different very simple techniques, how you can use everything I showed you so far to kind of make those shortcuts and to create convincing colors without actually painting color from scratch.

So the first step would be getting a good reference. If you go to my reference folder, you will find a different good skies and stuff like that.

And make sure when you’re looking for references that you're picking up a good reference note, like heavily for the edited one.

I will do a separate chapter on that one. Just make sure that you always find a good reference that hasn't very kind of nice ballot because we’ll be using that as a starting point. So right now what I'm having here, I'm having a background that is beautiful sky.

I'm having this 3D sphere like I created, because I think, showing you how it works in 3D is much easier and less time consuming for you as well.

So I just created this sphere. And I’ve got one light over here.

So there is this one light. And by rotating it, I can match the direction, because I can see the photo behind the sphere,

And I can start actually matching my lighting with my plate. So if I go proximity here, if you see it's almost kind of a lining with that,

So now also I would choose color which I already did, if you click over here. and then you basically need to find a good space. try not to use the hot spot overhear. because it will be very heavy and strong. so I would choose some color over here. It will still give us this really nice red team. And still be lighting this sphere very nicely.

And now basically what you have here, I have a very strong, light source coming from the sun. But also we have all those beautiful balls lights, like coming from the sky, From all over the place.

So in order to get that, you need some kind of bounce light system. And it is very easy to do it, to fake it in photo shop 3D.

All you need to go to the environment. And first you need to copy your sky. So I'm copying my sky and I'm going back to my environment. And over here, you just say edit texture. And copy paste it. So I already did it.

I'm just trying to show you how I made those. For example, if this was black, like imagine if he had another sky, And we wanted to create the fact of that sky.

Let’s actually do it so you can see how it changes. So now you can clearly see that my sphere takes all the lighting Information from my reference and now I know how the lighting will look on the object that has this color.

let's quickly just change the situation. And go to my reference folder. And pick up some kind of sky. Let’s do something different now. let's go look at it like this, And it's going to be fairly dark, because you can see like over here. But let’s see if we can match the color of this car over here, Through all this sphere.

So we select this. Go to my example. Going to destroy this guy.

We can actually do this way. We create the second version. And we create this version. copy the sphere. And this sphere, let's go back to our 3D mode.

Pick up our light. let's move on a sphere, maybe over here.And now having a light. And the problem with this picture is that we don't have a direct source of light hitting our scene.

Because if you look carefully, the sun is blocked. And this car is picking some highlights because there is a reflection. So it would be very kind of smart with it.

And I think what we need to do, we will have a light. It will be not as strong. It will be very diffused as well.

So we will have a light. Let's pick the colors. I would say it's gonna be a very reddish kind of color. so this is exactly what you are getting on this people. If you take a closer look.

There's not much highlights, because the sun is blocked by the shadow. But what is there in this picture from the sky is a lot of these balance like quite a lot of like dark blue. So in order to get that one will copy this one, go to our HTRL. Go to our environment. Edit texture.

And we will replace that one. Now, as you see, environment was replaced by that different environment.

And if we go back to our scene, suddenly you see our sphere is picking up all the calories information in that scene. So in a nutshell, if you're doing a scene, and if you are not sure how to proceed with the color. First. We will find a good skier.

You will find a good reference. And then even by using photoshop 3D, you can fix this color. you can make it like your own study inside.

8. Visualizing Your Story---1-3.Understanding RGB Sliders

so let me show you how to apply color from a reference today's very simple graphic shapes that they usually create when we are doing our graphic design stage.

We just broke out stuff in black and white and then we will hit the point where we will try to put some color Information.

And I will show you how to do it. So the first question that you usually need to ask yourself before jumping into color,what is the local color of the object? Local.

So what is the actual colour of this object? When there is no light?
P83 - 00:45没有光的时候应该什么颜色。
So let's just drop a random set of colors. Like that's just big base color. Let’s pick something bluish color, All of our first questions was local color. And the second question would be you value,

P83 - 01:12颜色 一本色二光影阈值。
Like, what is my value? Because in order to be physically correct, color wise your object needs to have the proper value to it. And by saying what I mean is that, for example, this kind of looks like it can exist in this place, When it comes to this guy, it's kind of too bright, isn't it?

And I'm not saying it can not exist in this place because be glowing object.
P83 - 01:45可能是冉冉升起发光的颜色。
The same with this one.but if this was a regular object with one emission, If this object is not creating light, for example, If we are considering the object that is not creating the light, then it can offer proper decent to it.

if you consider this object, they're not creating the light, make sure that your value like the brightness of your object stays considerably integrated in the scene.

So probably I need to go back and kind of changed the lighting of these guys.

Then this guy looks like it can exist in this scene, And I'm kind of eye bowling. There is no extreme rule of this in this scene. So don't overstress yourself. Trying to create the perfect match.

But just understanding that you need to have watch the brightness of your value is very important.

After the deciding what is your local calories. So now it is time to kind of start dropping. Let me actually combine those three guys. Start dropping the lighting Information from this reference,

And now it's very tricky. Is it just a matter of color or something? Like, can you just go and do this? selected bright color of the sky. And paint this.

And as you see it, it doesn't work that very well. And the reason is because unlike traditional media, when you mix your colors in digital media, when you just apply color, it just applies some top of it with actually not mixing it with the local color that the object has.

So in order to fix that one. What do we need to do? We need to use our RGB sliders.

If I press up six of my machine, you will get these guys over here. And these guys will help you to actually start mixing this local color with the light source or whatever like a balance color or stuff like that.

So let me actually kind of move of the spheres closer together. And I want you to get some balance happening in between.
P83 - 04:09融合颜色平衡颜色。
So now we will pick up this color, and it's kind of bluish color. And we know that the light source has some redness to it,

Like because we can see in the sky and wherever the highlight is, it's kind of reddish, right? So instead of picking this color and painting it, it will never give us a physical representation, a real lighting model. We’ll go and start increasing our yellow colour inside these bluish color.
P83 - 04:44不能涂抹光。里面含有蓝色。
So you see this red over here, we'll start increasing it. And also going and probably also making it brighter as well.
P83 - 04:56增加RGB蓝色,球体蓝色亮些。
because it's being lead by that that color. So we’ll go and make it brighter. and we’ll move and do this.

P83 - 05:04选择蓝色主打色RGB调节后。
And now let's try to paint this one. now it's much better. It's because now it's a blue sphere. picking up nice warm color from there.
P83 - 05:18现在再用光涂抹蓝色就对了。
So we cannot even take this color at a little bit of a yellow. same with this guy, Like the green guy. Go and increase to red this. decrease the blue, And I think these guys probably too bright, so let’s drop the saturation.
P83 - 05:59比如绿色太亮了,降低饱和度。
Same with this guy. you can see over here on the sand. The way it works. So we will go like this. and we'll apply some color. same with the color balance. We know this kind will bound on this back of period.

P83 - 06:22类似沙土颜色涂抹。比如这阶段。
but instead of just painting it like this, which will never give you a correct model of the lighting scenario. what we will do. We know there is some science, And we know there is some blue as well. We will pick the lucky color and it will just reduce redness, To get more silent and get more blue.
P83 - 06:46蓝色可以中和阳光中的红更静。
Especially put these guys over here.once I increase the blue we'll start painting. And now it's picking up this color, same with these guys over here. So you can already see it happening over here. And because we pick the local color of this object,
P83 - 07:32比如给球体涂上蓝色。
you can see it’s almost would you see over here. So you kind of referencing it from the existing picture. And it's almost matching like it's not 100% perfect,

but at least it does show you a better model of what you would care if you would trying to play these objects into the scene rather than just colour picking and applying that will never give you a good result.
P83 - 08:06都好过直接选择颜色涂抹效果。
And also, like, for example, these two spheres, like all these three spheres, they will have bounce light between each other.
P83 - 08:14比如三层颜色彼此平衡。
So you cannot just pick the green light and paint it just over here. it wouldn't be right. Instead of that, you need to pick up this color. you can add some more green, because we know the sphere is green. I need some less blue.
P83 - 08:29比如绿色的可以稍微加入蓝色。
And then once you paint over here. Same with this one. You can pick this color and say, okay, I need some blue balance.
P83 - 08:40比如蓝色的加入绿色平衡。
I'm kind of exaggerating right now. But you got the point in order to paint the change of light color and to get affected by environment, you need to start with local color and actually drag the slider to get where you want to get. And before I discovered this matte, it was very extremely, very difficult to kind of readjust my colors. Because I wouldn't know, for example, if I'm picking this blue and I want some red. Should I go over here? Or like, should I go here?
P83 - 09:25比如蓝色中和色不知道选择上下。
It was very confusing. But now I know if I want something a little bit more red. I would just pick this color and say, okay, for some reason, I wanted a little bit more red and you're paint the red, right?
P83 - 09:40比如需要一点红色,就涂抹点红。
So for example, you can pick this one and say, okay, I need you a little bit more red as well.
P83 - 09:49比如选择中间的可以加入红色。
Let's see if I pick up this guy over here. Put the ball over here. Just paint out of the color.

Bring back the balance line. And now I know that this sphere should get some balance light from this reddish kind of sand.

I could not just pick this color and paint it in. It wouldn't give me a proper model. As I know, as I already know, what I need to pick this one. And I say there is some orange, So I will get some red. And decrease in blue light.
P83 - 10:44橘黄色是红色减去蓝色。
Probably we readjust value as well.so now I'm getting a very nice kind of bounce light. And yeah, and you can see like this sphere becomes more and more integrated inside the scene.

P83 - 11:08绿球装上沙土色,融入沙土环境。
And the more work it out, the better it will become. And I'm really picking a very crazy colors. if I would stay very sad, I would probably get even better results with that. So don't forget, let's just summarize.

First, you need to ask yourself, what is the local color? Then you need to check your values. And then use RGB sliders to add colors. Very straightforward.
P83 - 11:59本色 光影 RGB颜色。
And just by checking those three questions, you can always see if something is all right. If something is not looking good in terms of unlike if it's not for the real or not, it just means some of these guys are all fried, like either we used the wrong values or didn't use RGB sliders.

So that's why it's a very safe way to start from a very simple shape with a graphic design, which was first step graphic design. And then he said we had some local colour checked values and used to be slide as to add some colors.

All right. That's pretty much it about color. And to be honest, colour is it very different type of beast itself. So don't get stressful if you're not getting color from scratch. And the good news is you don't need to do so. 8. Visualizing Your Story---2-1.Demonstration 1

let me show you how to actually go and apply color to your black and white sketches. It's always a big question. How do we proceed from black and white graphic design towards a final colorful illustration and concept.

So let me just do it very quick. sketch over here, black and white sketch. if we are aiming to get some likes on Facebook, we definitely need some rocks. Maybe introduce some clouds, A very basic simple sketch.

So how do we get from here? towards nice colorful picture. it is actually very simple. What are going to use. Once again, we will get recognized for reference. Like for example, let's see. You can even use this one. Take this one copy it. Bring it in.

P84 - 01:34参考图,粘贴到绘制图上。
So so now, or what we will basically be doing, we will be using blending modes like double click and let's say exclude darks, To establish the sky.
P84 - 01:48双击修改天空。
So we'll move around in the sky. Don't worry about the tree. at any point, we can get rid of the tree. But what we want to get in and we want to get some really nice mood and sky.

And let's say that's actually copy the tree, because we will be using some Information from that tree as well.So we will now use content aware filter to shift at five.

I just get rid of the tree itself. so I'm not sure if we need this clouds right now. So it'll definitely be. And I want to bring those back from now. I've got a really nice kind of lighting in the background.

And as for foreground, what I will be doing like, i'll still have my tree, This guy over here. And I like the colors over here. So basically, i'll take those. For example. Now we will exclude whites. So when I stretch this. I’ll go down, It just shows me the structure where the dark color is. So basically what I can do, it can quickly fill out rocks or whatever they are. anything big and monumental will get a lot of likes on Facebook.

P84 - 03:31前景裁剪出树木的样子。
I will just fill the gap over there. So it's kind of very squashy and blurry. But when we zoom out, we actually see a lot of cool things, so afterwards would basically we'll do. We'll start painting over, introducing some textures like some painting information on the pool. Because we color sampling from an existing image. It will be already having a very good solid base to start painting.

And you can do the same for the rest of the picture. like go on. We're here. And now it's for the ground. Kind of do the same, I will take this grass. Apply it over here. Doesn't necessarily need to be. exactly the same grass. It's just a nice ground right. And now it's because we were using a picture with no fault whatsoever.

P84 - 05:07用原底图的默认值。
But because we've got a lot of colors, you can go and start actually applying some really nice atmosphere as well. just by picking those colors. Just knocking everything backwards.

It may be introducing like a lot of these bounds like that we have in the sky. Now we need to have kind of the same on the ground as well. And that's actually pretty much it. that this is the way how you do it. And like you can start because that's the good thing about having a very nice solid reference. you can start color sampling from that reference and just bringing some clouds and all sorts of different things.

P84 - 06:49草地绿色的。大山云雾缭绕的。
Even increasing the amount of fog we are having. And as for sky, because they are already having a nice base, where you can start sketching like refining this guy. Make it a little bit more graphic looking.

P84 - 08:08放大雾气。精调天空。
And as a final touch to blend those colors together, we will be using mixer brush.
P84 - 08:12用混合刷子工具。
So general, I'm using this one, and I will go simple all layers. Same with this smudge tool. As I’m almost using, this magical j softer because it gives me, it helps me to soften the edges. to blend those together.
P84 - 08:40用混合刷子和柔化工具处理。
What is the basis of the problem? Now use burn tool. Maybe we can indulge and burn tools. Dark a little bit here and there.

P84 - 09:25用暗化工具加深。
Got some birds then. Birds always bring extra likes. So everybody likes birds.
P84 - 10:30天空中绘入一些飞鸟。
And that's it. you can see like starting from a black and whites cage, we were able to quickly get a very decent kind of color composition, without actually spending a lot of time trying to paint everything from scratch, which is true.

It is a good exercise to do. But now, I don't have time to do that. like if they ask me to deliver four different concepts by the end of the day.

I don't have the luxury to paint a reference from scratch. And there is no need to do it because using for reference and using all different shortcuts. It just gives us so much flexibility.

And like colors that you would probably never get. If we were painting from scratch, Introducing a couple of storms will be nice.
P84 - 11:36加深轮廓,加亮湖泊。
And all I'm doing, I'm just picking the balance light. because like stones will always pick the really nice balance nice. those bars light on the sky. I'm introducing these bright spots just to create some foreground elements. And ultimately to create this zigzag motion remember I kept talking about all the time when we would take our first lectures, you always want to have this motion inside your picture, some kind of curves. So to do that. It’s very good to introduce different bright spots here and there.

let’s just smudge it a little bit here as well. is also one of my favorite tools because it allows you to kind of separate things and make selections without actually going properly heavy on precise on the way you select things.

It's all about efficiency, this is some of the birds back. It is pretty cool. So if you only can include a character because including characters always get you more likes. Just a very foreground element. that's pretty much it,
P84 - 16:38前景加入角色。
It's not just. The birds is very 2D dimensional. a little bit of life. why should they be birds. let's create dragons, So we’ll pick everybody likes dragons, from here to there very quickly, just because I was using a good reference. I was trying to sample and get a lot of things from that reference.

So let me do another example just so you really understand how to move starting from those black and white sketches because that's what I think is very important.

And even in the first composition is much more important than trying to further bash something from the very beginning.
