One morning, about two years ago, my mother was watching a figure skating tournament on TV. I didn’t know about the sport then; I just saw that the athlete was so graceful and beautiful, and when he skates across the ice it’s like he’s gliding steadily. I took a look at the screen and was immediately attracted.
My mother told me that his name was Yuzuru Hanyu. From that day on, I began to like this sport a lot.
I knew that there are four international tournaments throughout the year; the European championships in January; the Four Continent Cup between the end of January and the start of February; the World Championships in March; and finally, the Grand Prix of figure skating in October.
Out of all the events, my favorite is men’s single skating. The world records of the short program and free skating are 113.97 and 218.63. The world record for the points in total is 335.30. These records are all held currently by American skater Nathan Chen.
There are six types of jumps in figure skating: the toe jumps, which requires the skater to strike the ice with his or her toe pick against the ice are toe loop, lutz and flip; the blade jumps which don’t need striking are salchow, loop and axel. The axel is the hardest jump because it starts forward unlike the other jumps, so the skaters need to rotate half more a circle. Those who can do an axel jump perfectly can usually execute the other elements very well too. For example, Yuzuru Hanyu is known for his triple axel.
I love this sport because of its complicacy. The skaters are judged from lots of different points of views, and the scores are made up from lots of parts. The lost of one single element would affect the scores greatly.
Also, I love this sport because of its beauty. I feel like every move the skaters make on the ice along with their music and costumes are creating precious art.
But moreover, I see the power inside this sport, and my love also comes from this. Skating holds the power to affect the audience and bring lots of different emotions to the world. It has the power to create unforgettable moments. It has the power to inspire us in unique and different ways.
Earlier this month, Yuzuru Hanyu announced his retirement, leaving a legacy behind. I’m sad, but I also thought about the precious lessons he taught us.
Like all of the athletes in this sport, we should always believe in our dreams even if we are experiencing difficulties in our life. We should be persistent in our life because it is the foundation for us to reach higher and accomplish our goals.
Yuzuru Hanyu once said: “I hope that the me tomorrow is greater than the me today; that is the life I want to live.”
I would like to end my speech with this quote, and I believe in this way, everyone’s dreams would come true.
