The very soul of Cambridge is in a river. The river Cam , I daresay, is the most beautiful stream in the world. Its name is Granta, but some call it the River Cam, maybe to indicate, I am not quite clear, the difference between the upper and lower reaches. The river meanders with many bends. The upper reach boasts the famous Byron's Pool, where the poet used to roam for pleasure. Here lies an ancient village called Glancester, which has an orchard where you can recline sipping tea in the shade of peach and plum trees laden with fruit. You let some of the fruit drop into your cup, and little sparrows would come down to your table to peck something to cat, so that you have the sensation of being in quite another world. This is the upper reach. The lower reach runs from Chesterton down to where the river broadens to afford an ideal spot for boat-racing between spring and summer. A dam separates the two reaches at a point where the current becomes swift. To listen under starlight to the sound of the water, the chimes of evening bells wafted from a neighboring village, and worn-out cows grazing at the river's edge: these are some of my most mysterious experiences at Cambridge. Here the beauty of Nature, its tranquility, its harmony, flood your soul in spite of yourself, with the starlight and the shimmering waves looking on, as it were, in acquiescence.
