二、原文
I had a letter from my sister yesterday. She lives in Nigeria. In her letter, she said that she would come to England next year. If she comes, she will get a surprise. We are now living in a beautiful new house in the country. Work on it had begun before my sister left. The house was completed five months ago. In my letter, I told her that she could stay with us. The house has many large rooms and there is a lovely garden. It is a very modern house, so it looks strange to some people. It must be the only modern house in the district.

had a letter from sb 收到某人的来信 = receive/get a letter from sb = hear from sb

she said that … 间接引语，L 15课学过
3、 Work on it had begun before my sister left
work工作、作业，这里作抽象的不可数名词，前面可不加冠词
Music is everything to me. music是抽象的不可数名词
Life is short。 life是抽象不可数名词
本句用了过去完成时,before 引导的时间状语从句-L14
4、There is a lovely garden. It is a very modern house, so it looks strange to some people.
1) there be 句型说明人或物的存在，时态比较灵活，be的单复数取决于紧跟在后的第一个名词单复数形式(就近原则)
there be 否定：be + not
There isn’t a computer in my room.
there be 一般疑问：be 提句首
Is there a computer in your room?
某些状态动词如remain, lie, exist, live 和位置转移的动词如arrive, come, enter, follow, rise,也可以用there +… 结构
There remain some problems to be solved.
2) It 是为了避免重复某个名词或事情而用来指代的, 也可指时间、距离、天气，作形式主语、形式宾语等
It is Sunday today.
It is raining again.
5、形容词的位置
1）单个形容词的位置:限定词+形容词+ 名词
I am reading an interesting book.
注意修饰something, anything, nothing, everything, somebody, someone, anybody, anyone, nobody, no one, everybody, everyone 等不定代词的形容词要后置
I have something important to say.
2)多个形容词的位置
观点形容词+描绘形容词
a beautiful white table
名词短语中，形容词的顺序总结如下：限定词，描绘形容词，尺寸大小，形状，年龄，新旧，颜色，国籍出处，质地材料+中心名词
