Greatness in Ordinary
Greatness in Ordinary
a book review of Titanic Survivor
Recently, I read Titanic Survivor, which tells us a story of Harold Bride, a Titanic survivor, just as its name implies.
Harold was the ship’s radio operator, just 21 at that time. On that terrible night, he was rolled up by a huge wave and was saved by a lifeboat. Just due to this, he had got a chance to see Titanic gradually disappeared slowly under the sea, feeling a sense of fear.
Although the event was disastrous, some ordinary people, as the story shows, revealed their bravery and greatness, such as the band on the ship, incredibly, continued playing music in spite of sinking with Titanic. Moreover, the person who touched me the most was Jack Phillips, Harold’s workmate. Jack kept busy sending the call of assistance, even if the captain suggested him run for life. It was his persistence that saved the survivors’ life, but eventually, he lost his own life.
The band playing until the very end, the radio operator staying at the wireless...... Those, who may just be ordinary people in someone’s eyes, all showed the exceeding greatness. That is to say, they were no longer ordinary people, but heroes.
