Returning to the Oceans for Days of Nature 2023

Days of Nature approaches! Across nearly three weeks of this event, celebrate with a new story and friends in the Sanctuary Islands, and share ways to connect that story with real-world efforts making the waters we all share cleaner and healthier.

From 00:00 April 20th through 23:59 May 7th (all times PDT, UTC-7), the Nature Guide Spirit in Home will offer to take players to one of the Sanctuary islands of Daylight Prairie. On those familiar shores, a new Light Creature can be found, unable to return to the waters until you’ve lent it a hand.

Once the creature is able to move, follow it farther out across the waves where both the creature and the Anxious Angler from Season of Abyss await Sky children’s help to confront a new challenge, as debris and other darkness from Sky’s other realms accumulate in these Sanctuary waters.

Free other creatures and clear out the affected area, and earn a bit of Light process, too. During the event’s three phases, the amount of debris will increase as the currents bring it in, before gradually decreasing as Sky children gather to clear it away. This quest—and more importantly, the new Light Creature friends!—will remain in the game after the event ends.

Pitching in for Cleaner Oceans 为更清洁的海洋而努力
While this event can be played in Sky, one of its most important elements goes beyond our screens. Like other events, Sky kids can choose from a number of items as mementos available for both in-game currency and for purchase. However, the majority of IAPs for this event will be charity items, and a portion of the revenue from each charity item sold will be donated to real-world ocean clean-up efforts. We’re excited to share that this year, we’ll once again donate the proceeds from Days of Nature charity items to The Ocean Cleanup to support their ongoing efforts to rid the oceans of plastics.

The Ocean Cleanup’s core work is focused on developing and scaling technologies to both remove the legacy plastic pollution from the oceans and prevent plastic emissions from rivers from reaching the oceans. In fact, each year between 1.1 and 2.4 million metric tons of plastic end up in the world’s oceans, perhaps most notoriously in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

This includes not only items like bottle caps, toothbrushes, crates, bottles, and toys, but also countless so-called “ghost nets” that are left adrift after being used for fishing. In fact, as we planned this year’s event, we were shocked to learn that ghost nets and other discarded fishing equipment make up more than 75% of all plastic waste in the ocean.

These plastics are devastating to humans and animals alike. Marine life is sickened or killed by this pollution, and when plastic breaks down, it releases microplastics and toxic chemicals into the food web, ultimately reaching the people who eat those fish and other creatures.

2023 Days of Nature Charity Items

A little more than half of the total list price of items listed here will be donated to ocean clean-up efforts. Of the remaining amount, 30% will cover platform fees and 20% to a portion of development.

This year’s new items—the sea shell and glasses pack—can be found in the in-game shop menu. The returning items will be available from the Friendship Tree of Chill Sunbather Spirit who will be walking around the beach where the Nature Guide Spirit is waiting in Sanctuary.

Long-time players may note that the amount going to our charity partner this year is based on the list price, rather than a portion of net proceeds (the amount that remained after platform fees were paid). Our hope is that this makes it easier to understand in advance what amount of each purchase is being donated. This change will also allow us to update the community more quickly with the results from this year’s Days of Nature charity purchases since time won’t be spent calculating different deductions, and we expect that across all items, the overall proportion of proceeds that will be donated to charity should be at least the same as previous years, if not a bit higher.

The past two years of Days of Nature have focused on ocean clean-up efforts, and in those two years, players have raised an incredible total of $1,333,201 to support the work going into those efforts. Donations aren’t the only way to get involved with these efforts, though! If making a donation doesn’t work for you, there are other meaningful ways to keep plastics and other pollution out of oceans and rivers:
