I know everyones dreading D&D as the directors, but let's remember that their adaption of GOT source material was praised up until the show surpassed the books.

I know the Soviets are something Americans know more about and maybe relate to better, but it would be nice for folks to understand that it's part of the reason WHY Chinese people behave a certain way，but they already got Chernobyl! Let us have the Three Body Problem!

I am not surprised. The west has done this for decades. Just look how Hollywood blatantly ripped off the Infernal Affairs series and changed the characters from Chinese to Irish.

（回复11）It's perfectly normal for different cultures to adapt material from different cultures and to change it in the process. I've seen plenty of Shakespeare plays with either black actors or in African setting (e.g. Julius Caesar). Cultures shouldn't be hermetic.

（回复12）yeah... well Shakespeare's plays are long standing and are already well established. We're talking about the first moving pictures series of a book, being introduced for the first time. Also the first book of the series is very much unique to China, the main character Ye Wenjie's whole motivation comes from the experience of the cultural revolution. I wouldn't mind if all the side characters are diverse in cast as long as they do a good job. However, it should be noted that the original series itself actually does feature ppl from all over the world, so I don't think diversity would be an issue.

（回复13）It’s wrong in more than just one way. Not only Chinese culture is a huge part of the story it is crucial to the characters. And these soviets... It was never really true. What Americans now know about USSR is all based on movies and tv series. It’s kind of awful. And I wouldn’t want the same thing to happen with Chinese. Oh wait... It’s happening. The worst guys in the world. Chinese and Russians. The question is who’s worse.

5、As there are non-Chinese characters in the book, an English adaptation with a majority Asian American cast with non Asian actors would be great in reaching more audiences. I just hope they keep to the original characters and settings.

因为这本书中有非中国人的人物存在，一部经过改编的英文作品，演员阵容中的一大半都是美籍华人，同时没有亚洲演员，这样做会非常有助于让更多的观众收看到。我只希望他们能忠实于原作中的人物和环境。
（回复1）Are there non Chinese characters in the first book? I remember when the story gets global in the second book that it introduces a lot of international people, but the first book is pretty contained to China. I also honestly feel like casting Asian American actors would be already be ruining it a bit - there's a big difference between Chinese and Asian American. We'll see, I think your scenario is probably the most likely, but it does remove a lot of what I liked reading the book, which is that this was a Chinese story told from that perspective and not really influenced through the Hollywood/American lens.
第一部书中有非中国人的角色吗？我记得当这个故事在第二部书中开始走向国际时，有一大堆国际人士登场，但第一部书在很大程度上是仅限于中国范围内的。老实说，我也感觉让美籍亚裔演员来演就已经有点毁原著了，中国人和美籍亚裔之间还是有很大差别的。且看吧，我觉得你设想的情况是最有可能出现的，但要是这样的话，我在读书时喜欢的很多部分就会不复存在，也即这是一个中国故事，是以中国人的视角讲述的，并没有真的被好莱坞/美国的视角影响。
（回复2）It gets international in the first book. The ETO is international, and towards the end of the book the response to the ETO is international as well. Not to mention the avatars in the virtual world are a mixture of Eastern and Western figures.
在第一部书里就已经走向国际了。地球三体组织就是国际化的，而且在接近尾声处，对地球三体组织也给出了国际层面的回应。更不用说，那个虚拟世界中的阿凡达们也混杂了东西方人的特点。

All that said, I hope it retains a largely Chinese focus. It's part of what appealed to me as a reader.

（回复3）I can get what you say. Chinese Americans, compared to Chinese, despite age and experience, may not be good at conveying/deliver that dark, suppressed "Soviet" feeling. For the international part in Book 1 where it's mostly about Evans and ETO, I also doubt actors nowadays maintain that "Internationalism" spirit (it's both romantic and dangerous cos it could be pulled to extremism like Evans) that were seen in foreigners who went to China in early days.

（回复4）Oh, just put every one in a uniform and slap a gray/blue desaturated filter on it.. That's what they do for films about Soviet Russia anyway -- uniforms and that color palette are pretty much cinematic shorthand for "repressed authoritarian country". That's pretty much what they did in The Hunger Games film series.

6、I could really see Chernobyl vibes. When I saw Chernobyl and it’s commentary it really called back to my reading of TBP.
But it’s DD making the adaptation lol

7、They certainly don't have to hire an all Chinese crew, there's lots of great Chinese characters and they should stay Chinese but to suggest the crew be Chinese is a bit much. I personally hope that the scenes that should be chinese stay in Chinese and we get subtitles. Then when it becomes more international English is used where appropriate (like at the UN for example)

8、Netflix is international anyways. America now only makes up a fraction of their viewers and they are constantly churning out non American skewed shows
