Christ’s students often compare the College to the Tardis: the inconspicuous vessel that transports sci-fi hero Doctor Who through time and space. It looks small on the outside, but has extensive grounds and gardens, concealing a theatre, three eateries, several libraries, a squash court, gym and swimming pool. It’s right in the centre of the city, less than a minute’s walk from supermarkets and nightspots, but somehow escapes the noise of traffic and the attention of tourists. It takes you on a journey from picturesque medieval Cambridge, through the landscaped splendours of the seventeenth-, eighteenth- and nineteenth- centuries, to the futuristic concrete of the 1970s ‘Typewriter’ building. And its famously friendly, international community has been home to pioneers of all descriptions, from ground-breaking naturalist Charles Darwin to radical poet John Milton.

Christ’s contains a mixture of buildings and facilities dating from the Middle Ages to the twenty-first century. These pictures show students enjoying some of its historic charms, as well as a few of the College’s more contemporary features.

Christ’s is unique among Cambridge Colleges in being designed not just to honour a member of the royal family, but to accommodate one: Lady Margaret Beaufort, affectionately known here as “the mother of all Tudors”. As a woman, Margaret could not mix freely in what was in the sixteenth century a clerical community. Instead, she observed the scholars at dinner, and at prayer, from discreet windows in her residence, the Lodge; a secret passage from the Chapel enabled the Chaplain to take communion to her; her choice of texts on Theology, Law, and Medicine formed the core of Christ’s library; and the buildings of First Court were arranged to allow her access to the Lodge from a side street, without crossing College ground. Her care for scholars’ wellbeing extended to supplying Christ’s with a sanatorium for use “in times of plague”; she was less concerned for their entertainment, and our recently discovered Tudor playing cards were probably used out of her sight!

There is some debate around the coolest place to hang out in Christ’s. The College has a longstanding reputation for academic excellence, which may owe something to the popularity of the study spaces and Working Library; the glazed Library foyer is certainly one place to see and be seen. Many members of College sing the praises of the Old Library, which houses Darwin’s undergraduate letters, among other treasures, and proves that suffering from exam stress and the after-effects of partying are not exclusively twenty-first-century phenomena… So much love is lavished on the bust of Milton in the Hall that he always has lipstick on his collar, and the JCR, MCR and Boathouse all have advocates. There’s little debate, though, around the coldest place to hang out in Christ’s: our seventeenth-century swimming pool may be less icy than it was when the waters came straight from the city’s sluices/gutters, but it’s still a bracing experience, best enjoyed on a hot summer day.

Christ’s grounds host a surprising variety of flora and fauna, including seventy kinds of iris, foxes, jays, kestrels (and the occasional enterprising otter); the Fellows’ stipend includes one pot of honey from the hives and one pot of jam from the mulberry trees, each year. There have been intermittent attempts to introduce more exotic species: students once mounted a campaign for peacocks and the goat-like Yales on the gatehouse have inspired calls for similarly spotted miniature goats. But the one constant in Christ’s history has been its appeal to cats, as evidenced by “cat holes” in courtyard walls and pet memorials near the swimming pool. We may have been most popular with felines in Jacobean times, when accommodation included the notorious “Rat Hall”, but even today, there is usually at least one claimant to the title, College Cat. Current incumbent Rocket is famed for the vigour with which she pursues nocturnal interlopers onto “her” territory: this may be why Christ’s only reported ghost has not dared visit his former haunt in the Fellows’ Garden for some years!

Christ’s students have long pursued a variety of extra- and super- curricular activities, alongside their degrees: the modern game of tiddlywinks was devised by undergraduates of the College in 1955, while the somewhat higher-minded Modern Humanities Research Association  first met here in 1918. There are still dozens of College clubs and societies, and the opportunities these present to meet new people, nurture long-standing interests, and discover new ones, are key to the student experience.

Our oldest recorded society is the Christ’s College Music Society, founded in 1710, which arranges termly concerts and recitals and oversees several ensembles including the non-audition Christ’s Voices, the Orchestra, jazz and chamber music groups. The Chapel Choir  sings at weekly services as well as other events, tours internationally, and has played a significant role in promoting the work of female composers.

They put on several shows each year, including a student-written pantomime, a Freshers-only production, Shakespeare in the Fellows’ Garden, comedy nights and a regular Monologue Clash. Performances are staged around College, and many have non-competitive auditions.

Some students find that the Feminist Society or one of the subject societies – Classics, Economics, History, Law, and Medicine – are more their speed. The Darwin Society brings together scientists of all levels, and the Politics Society, named after Davidson Nicol, invites journalists, academics and activists to the College.

The Undergraduate Student Union, the JCR, and Postgraduate Student Union, the MCR arrange a range of events, both academic and social, as well as stress-busting sessions to help when things get hectic. Some of these events are intended for a general audience, others for the various communities within Christ’s, including LGBT+, BME, International and Women students. MCR members are particularly active in running the College’s Emerging Research Seminars, together with Meet the Fellows Mixers, themed dinners, trips to galleries and museums and even sushi-making workshops.

Our sports clubs are open and accessible to all students, no matter how experienced or knowledgeable about the game they are. Football (men’s and women’s) and netball (mixed and women’s) are both popular choices, alongside badminton, squash, swimming, rugby, cricket, mixed lacrosse, hockey, tennis, climbing, volleyball and ultimate frisbee. Christ’s College Boat Club benefits from its own recently-renovated boathouse – the oldest wooden-framed boathouse on the River Cam – and welcomes many novice rowers every year.

First Court is home to Christ’s café-bar, the Buttery, and our in-house barista. Come evening, it’s the College’s main social hub. The undergraduate common room (JCR) has table tennis and pool tables, as well as a TV, books and board games; there’s a bigger TV with streaming services, sports channels and PlayStation in the Television Room. The split-level postgraduate common room (MCR) has its own bar, kitchen and games consoles, as well as foosball.

Self-service meals take place in our cafeteria, Upper Hall, and caterers use local, ethically sourced produce wherever possible. There are vegan and vegetarian options, and you also get ‘unlimited sides’ – after you’ve bought your meal you can go back as many times as you like to top up on vegetables, salad or chips! A more elaborate, three-course dinner is available six nights a week in the sixteenth-century Hall, where ‘formal halls” allow students to socialize with friends and guests from across the University.

Students have a choice of study spaces, from the 24/7 Working Library to the grand Plumb Auditorium; if you study Law, you will probably use our specialist Law Library too. Manuscripts and archives can be consulted in the picturesque Old Library, which also mounts regular exhibitions. Our gardens are famous within Cambridge; the Fellows’ Garden occupies almost a third of the College grounds, and is an oasis of tranquillity (with excellent Wi-Fi – like everywhere else in Christ’s).

Christ’s rowers enjoy the fact that we’re one of the closest Colleges to our boathouse. As well as the boats themselves, the boathouse has a well-equipped gym, changing rooms, showers, river balcony with TV and speakers, and indoor area with sofa, cooking facilities, and coffee machine. On the College site itself there is a squash court, second gym, and open-air swimming pool (seventeenth-century, but refurbished for modern use!). We share a sports ground with St Catharine’s, and playing fields and tennis courts are only a short cycle-ride away.

Lectures, plays and film screenings occur in our modern tiered theatre. Our historic Chapel is home to concerts and services, and we have a function room with a bar that can be booked for parties and other student-led events. These are also convenient practice and rehearsal facilities, including pianos, a music room and meeting rooms.

Undergraduates can live in College accommodation every year of their course. Most students have rooms on the main campus; another sixty live in houses just behind it, on Jesus Lane and King’s Street. Everyone has a room to themselves, and 40% of rooms are en suite (pretty good for a College with buildings dating back to 1505). Shared bathrooms often have multiple shower cubicles, and all rooms have access to cooking facilities, as well as high-speed internet.

Christ’s aims to house all postgraduates who request it, and much of our accommodation is located within five minutes’ walk of the College. There is also postgraduate housing near the West Cambridge site and the train station. Most of Christ’s postgraduate students live in single rooms, but we do have seventeen flats, of which six are suitable for couples.
