IT WAS THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT WHEN WE LANDED IN SAN Francisco. When I booked the flight, I hadn’t considered the time difference, nor the autumn nights could be chilly in California even if the days were still warm. Shuffling through the arrivals hall I wished I’d worn a jumper, jeans and some thick socks, not canvas shoes and a cotton shirt and slacks.

We stood at the carousel waiting for my shiny new backpack to appear through the rubber curtains and glide its way towards me. I suddenly remembered the missed call – from Bryony. I frowned then set the phone to ‘do not disturb’ and shoved it back in my pocket. I considered switching it off altogether, but at least this way I could still use the Internet.

Tang sat on the carousel ledge, despite my protestations, and trailed his grabber along the conveyor belt. He had to pick it up and move every few seconds before he got swept along.

When at last it circled towards my feet, my backpack was heavier than I remembered. An international airport and one couldn’t hire a car in the middle of the night? I didn’t consider getting in a cab. Instead: ‘Come on, Tang, we’re catching the bus.’

Formless shadows shuffled around in the dim artificial light of the bus station, and every now and again a broken door on one of the tall lockers that lined the wall banged open and slammed closed again. A tramp in a stained overcoat sat in a corner eyeing my new backpack.

One solitary android ticket attendant sat behind bulletproof glass in a tiny booth. He was wearing a flak jacket. You know it’s a bad place if an android needs protection. They often get assigned jobs like this – somewhere a human doesn’t really want to work but which needs something a bit more than a straightforward machine.

防弾ガラスを張った狭いブースに、チケット係のアンドロイドがぽつんと一体、座っていた。防弾チョッキを着ている。アンドロイドに防護が必要という時点で、危険な場所なのは明らかだ。アンドロイドはよくこういう仕事をあてがわれる。人は働きたがらないが、ただの機械を置いてしまっては味気ないような場所だ。

 

For some reason, it was important to me not to lose face in front of Tang, so I attempted to maintain a breezy composure and walked straight up to the booth, leaving Tang to follow in his own time.

僕はどういうわけだかタングの前では威厳を保ちたく、如何にも悠然とブースに向かった。タングには自分のペースで追いついてもらえばいい。

 

‘Excuse me, do you know of this corporation?’ I held up my phone upon which I’d stored the name of the company I thought I’d found on Tang’s underside.

‘I’m afraid I don’t understand, sir. Can you tell me what you mean by “Well?”’

‘Sir, an assessment of our conversation suggests that you have not asked a question about the location of Micronsystems.’

‘Oh, for goodness’ sake!’ Bloody android. This was exactly the kind of pedantic shit that made me not want to bother with one at home. Tang could be literal, but at least he was amusing. I asked him if he could tell me the whereabouts of Micronsystems.

I sighed. ‘Then where is it? Actually, no, don’t answer that. Tell me this instead: is there a hotel nearby?’

‘Yes, sir. There are a number of hotels in the area. There is one just across the street.’ He pointed.

Here is some printed information for you, sir.’ The android turned one hundred and eighty degrees at the waist and pulled out a leaflet for me.

‘Tang, I told you – give it back.’

He glared at me and wandered off, leaflet in hand. I turned to the droid to ask for another copy.

タングは僕を睨むと、リーフレットを持ったまま、ふらふらと歩き出してしまった。僕はアンドロイドに向き直り、同じものをもう一つくれるよう頼んだ。

I asked him when the next number twenty-two was due.

‘In twenty minutes, sir. The journey will take exactly fifty minutes. Unfortunately, for a journey of this duration there are no toilet or catering facilities on board. However, in the unlikely event of a road-traffic incident there are fire extinguishers and first-aid kits located at the front and back of the cabin.’

「二十分後でございます。所要時間は五十分ちょうどです。残念ながら、その程度の走行時間のバスには車内トイレはなく、飲食物の販売もございません。ただし、万が一交通事故が起きた場合には、バスの前方と後方の二ヵ所に消火器と救急箱のご用意がございます　」

I thanked the android and requested two bus tickets.

‘Yes, one adult and a… and a…’ I waved a hand in Tang’s direction. He was heading for the lockers. ‘Tang, don’t go far.’

‘No,’ he called, without turning round.

「やだ」タングが振り向きもせずに言う。

I asked him again for two adult tickets. Then I looked around for Tang. He was reaching up to try one of the locker doors. ‘Tang, leave the lockers alone! Come back, will you?’

I wasn’t sold on the idea of spending another minute in the bus station, let alone twenty, but at this point there were no quicker options. We’d just have to sit tight and hoe that a skinny Englishman and a bored robot didn’t attract any attention. With a heavy heart, I took a seat on a fixed plastic chair and looked around again for Tang. He was now jabbing at the locker door with a grabber, making a loud ‘donk, donk, donk’ noise.

Suddenly, a door next to us burst open and a grey, pale-looking man in a grey tracksuit emerged, shoving Tang out of the way as he left the bus station at a run. Tang wobbled, regained his balance and stared wide-eyed. Then he shuffled back to me and picked at his gaffer tape.

I watched the station clock tick down the minutes. Like an exam clock, every second that passed sounded louder than the last. I slumped down in my seat as best I could and ran my hands through my hair. I hadn’t done a great job of taking care of Tang and myself so far, I imagined Amy raising an eyebrow and making some comment about how if I’d more common sense then this wouldn’t have happened. And she’d be right.

An hour later, we were in a lovely rural guesthouse drinking hot chocolate.

Tang struggled to make it up the bus steps, and I had to push him from behind with my palms flat on the plates of his back. The bus he’d travelled in when he turned up in my back garden was a low rise, disability-friendly bus, but there was no such luck here. The steps were one challenge, but then there was the narrow aisle of the bus itself. Tang scraped and squeezed his way along, banging the elbows of sleeping passengers, which didn’t endear us to anyone.

タングはバズのステップを上がるのに苦戦し、僕が後ろから両手で背中を押してやらなければならなかった。タングが我が家の裏庭にやってきた際に乗ったバスは、体の不自由な人にも優しい低床バスだったか、ここではすんなツキもなかった。苦労してステップを突破しても、今度は狭い通路が立ちはだかる。タングが体を擦るようにして強引に進むせいで、寝ている乗客の肘にがんがんぶつかり、当然のことながら僕たちは全員から白い目で見られた。

 

Fortunately, the back seats of the bus were free. It meant that Tang could heave himself up into the middle of them and have plenty of room. We bounced along over the bus’s suspension, Tang with his round eyes fixed straight ahead while I lay my head against the window pretending to the doze, but all the time keeping a keen eye on Tang. I didn’t want to worry him by unpeeling his flap all the time to look at his cylinder, but on the other hand I had no idea how much time we had. Maybe I should have tried to find someone closer to home that could fix him. Maybe this was a stupid idea. Or maybe…maybe it would all work out in the end. I had no way of knowing.

ただ、幸いにもバスの最後尾の席が丸々空いていた。これならタングがその真ん中に重い体を引き上げさえすれば、ゆったり座れる。道中、僕たちはサスペンションの動きに合わせて揺られていた。タングは丸い目でまっすぐ前を見据え、かたや僕は窓に頭を預けて寝ているふりをしながら、タングの様子を注意して見ていた。タングを心配させたくなかったから、胸のフラップを何度も開けてシリンダーの具合を確かめるようなことはしなかったが、果たしてどれだけの時間が残されているのか、見当もつかなかった。家の近くでタングを直せそうな人を探すべきだったのかもしれない。こんなところまで来るなんて、愚かな選択だったのかもしれない。でも、もしかしたら……もしかしたら最後には万事うまくいくかもしれない。どう転ぶか、僕には知る由もなかった。
