Frank Ocean songs may not arrive as part of album-scale events these days, but they’re still appointment listening. “Dear April” and the mainly Spanish-language “Cayendo” are his first new singles since last year’s slowly building “In My Room,” and they reward the same type of obsessive late-night headphone sessions that greeted the surprise release of 2016’s landmark Blonde.

“Dear April(亲爱的四月)”和以西班牙语为主的“Cayendo(下坠)”是他自去年缓慢创作的“In My Room(在我的房间)”以来的首支新单曲。

Though only “acoustic” versions of the songs are available for streaming, the synth-like washes of “Dear April” sure sound electronic. Ambient pop more adequately describes the languid atmosphere of this beatless ballad. “You woke me up,” Ocean proclaims toward the end, but the slow-motion jazz guitar figures and Sandman sprinkles of keyboard make the song feel like a dream. The slightly left-of-center lyrics, which seem directed at a person rather than this cruel month, add another layer to what might be his most understated stunner yet. It’s not the Ocean you would’ve wanted to see at the now-postponed Coachella, but it’s the Ocean we needed to hear holed up alone together in our bedrooms. “Dear April, are you watchin’ him dance?” Ocean repeats until the song breaks off abruptly. Only in our minds, Frank.

“You woke me up(你把我吵醒了),”Ocean在片尾这样说道,但是慢节奏的爵士吉他和睡魔的键盘让这首歌就像是一场梦。 Ocean。“Dear April, are you watchin’ him dance(亲爱的四月,你在看他跳舞吗)?”Ocean重复着这句话,直到歌声戛然而止。
