The picture above collects the most frequently used slangs on the Internet among youngsters at present, also pervasive to see at a sport meet where cheerleaders lifting high on the LED name cards shining on.
As a product of the digital age, together for a touch of trendiness, the use of Internet slangs has grown so wide that it has made a trend irresistible for the years to come, which can be regarded as a subculture that is changing how we are communicating with the world. It is not just happening in Chinese but all humans’ languages.
The notion of diversity in language has gained some applaud, nevertheless, worries are filling the air. Conservatives put strong objections against the wave as they condemn these slangs violate what is considered “proper speaking” and may damage young people’s talking patterns.
But language itself is never lifeless, which stays relevant and current with the trends. Only when a language is profound and lifeful can it evolve and emerge into diverse expressions, which is Chinese adding to its charming melodies. The best way to deal with this, is by enhancing students’ cognition and sense of belongingness to their cultural communities and identities. Good to hear that televisions and networks have found innovative ways to give life to a profound culture in a new presence attracting new generations, which I reckon is continuing and ever-growing. These slangs mean we have a thriving and vivid language. And with the rising awareness of right patterns of communication, I hold my strong belief that we will always keep firm to what “proper speaking” is and adhere to the proper way of speaking whilst trying to keep up with the times..
