This is Breaking News. Good afternoon. We interrupt your programming with breaking news. Canadian wildfires are causing an air quality alert for the tri-state area for a second day. Houth concern and danger to millions of people. Hello, I'm Dana Tyler. We are monitoring the smokey haze as it blankets our area. People are being warned to stay indoors and avoid going outside of possible, especially if you have any compromised health conditions. This is a live look at Manhattan from our Earth camp. Orange skies and when you are outside, you can't smell the smoke in the air from those wildfires, hundreds of miles away. As far as flights, a ground stop was issued at North Liberty International Airport. That ground stop has been lifted, but there are delays. So earlier today, there was a ground stop at Lookwater Airport because of low visibility. That's been lifted, but there are flight delays. No issues at JFK Airport. We have a time lapse video of the city skyline from our Earth camera. And as you watch the smoke thicken, it's dense. You can barely see the buildings. Of course, the beautiful world trades and are standing tall there, but tough to see one real trade. City leaders say the air quality has not been this bad since the 1960s. Let's go live now to CBS 2's Alice Gainer. She's in Hoboken, New Jersey. We see you are wearing a mask. Certainly that has been advised by health officials and elected officials. Tell us about where you are right now. What is it? Feelings smell like Alice. Sure Dana, we're along the waterfront here in Hoboken. And within the past hour of visibility has actually improved. If you look across the river here, the Hudson River, you can actually make out the skyline behind me. No earlier. It was orange, yellow, very, very hazy. We really couldn't see anything across the river. Here on the waterfront on a day like today, normally people would be out and about biking, running, pushing strollers. It's kind of like a ghost town out here. The city of Hoboken tweeted a short time ago. The air quality alert has been elevated to hazardous here. Residents should stay inside of wood's trenduous activities. Outdoor recreation activities were canceled today. And tomorrow outdoor library activities are also canceled for tomorrow. We spoke with some businesses along the waterfront here. Restaurants very popular this time of year. They're concerned about business because they can't do any outdoor dining tonight. So that is one thing they are worried about, especially coming out of COVID. A lot of these places are still recovering. We also know that in the city of Patterson, New Jersey, they just had a press conference a short time ago. The mayor and other city officials there announcing they've got a plan in place, especially because they're seeing a spike in respiratory calls. They have more ambulances now available on the street. They should they need to respond to anybody. And you mentioned a wearing a mask. We spoke with a lot of doctors, both in New York City and here in New Jersey. Everyone's saying they're seeing an increase in calls, not just in people with underlying conditions, but people who are otherwise healthy. So they recommend a mask. Just like this one is perfectly fine. But if you do have an underlying condition, you are urge to earn N95 and even better. Stay inside. Limit your exposure outside. Live in Hoboken along the waterfront, Alice Gainer, CBS 2 News. Okay, Alice, thank you for that. It vise we have another live look at the Smokey conditions. This is the RFK Tri-Burro Bridge. We have a live look at that. Do we? Yes, there it is. And that appears a condition seam a little bit better than they were in our ago. Let's get the weather expertise on this Vanessa Murdoch is here just where we're standing and what we can expect in the forecast for a break from this Vanessa. Yeah, Dana, a significant break is not expected really until Friday. And especially the week and that's when we see a weather pattern shift finally in the short term. We are going to be stuck with that time. Heavy smoke across the region, just as we have outside right now. 66 degree reading with poor air quality, how poor on a scale of 1 or rather 0 to 500. We are at 3 24. This is the air quality index. All is said it has it is out there for not just those with underlying conditions for all of us. Tomorrow maybe some slight improvement in this but we still have an air quality alert. In effect all the way through midnight tomorrow across the Tri-State area and also for portions of New England back in the Pennsylvania upstate New York. Visibility's haven proved. We can see that with the numbers when we spoke just about an hour ago visibility in the Cindywoods under a mile. Now is at one and a third miles but we see a Long Island visibility has worsened. It is still terrible as we look toward inland Jersey. Overhead we see a few showers well to the north and cloud cover too above the smoke. The sun is shining overhead but we cannot see it. The smoke is thick over top and it will stay that way through the overnight. We watch as we make our way toward your Thursday morning. The smoke is still thick but slightly better. Expecting to be more like it looked the morning and it should stay that way through your Thursday again that air quality alert right now. In effect, in midnight tomorrow we could see that extended in a Friday before much improvement arrives over the weekend. Dana back to you. Vanessa, thank you. You've been watching Breaking News coverage of the air quality alert affecting the Tri-State area. We'll bring you updates on our streaming channel CBS News New York and on our website CBSNew York.com. I'm Dana Tyler.
