academic disciplines

n. An academic discipline is a branch of knowledge, taught and researched as part of higher education. 学科 e.g. The motion before us this eveningis one that can be explored through a wide variety of academic disciplines 2.

neuroscience

n. The study of the anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology of the nervous system 神经科学 We could consider the neuroscience of what love is in a materialist sense. 3

intrinsic

adj. If something has intrinsic value or intrinsic interest, it is valuable or interesting because of its basic nature or character, and not because of its connection with other things. 内在的; 本质的 Whether love is something that actually has a sense of intrinsic value 4

tweak

v. If you tweak something such as a system or a design, you improve it by making a slight change. 稍稍改进 e.g. For instead I wish to speak of why true love is something that we can reform, of why it is something that we of course need to tweak and clarify. 5

skirt over

avoid talking about something unpleasant or controversial. 回避 e.g. I am not going to make any attempts to skirt over the fact that true love in the way that perhaps we intuitively understand it. 6.

reciprocate

v. If your feelings or actions toward someone are reciprocated, the other person feels or behaves in the same way toward you as you have felt or behaved toward them. 报答,回报;(感情上)回应 True love is about the idea that this can be reciprocated that both parties can end up benefiting from each other whilst perceiving one of the greatest emotional feelings known to mankind. 7

hormone

n. A hormone is a chemical, usually occurring naturally in your body, that makes an organ of your body do something. 荷尔蒙 e.g. And again critics will say as the proposition already has that our perception of love is perhaps nothing more than a selection of hormones drowning our brains. 8

brush it under the carpet

To hide a problem or try to keep it secret instead of dealing with it. (把问题)置之不理 e.g. we simply want to pretend the problem doesn't exist, brush it under the carpet and go on being miserable 9.

akin

adj If one thing is akin to another, it is similar to it in some way. 相似的 e.g. I believe akin to abandoning a core tenet of the imperfect perfection of being human. 10.

irrefutable

adj. Irrefutable evidence, statements, or arguments cannot be shown to be incorrect or unsatisfactory. (证据、陈述或论据)无法反驳的 e.g. The ideal of true love has practical purposes that I think make it an irrefutable goal for every human being on this planet 11.

scroll through

If you scroll through text on a computer or phone screen, you move the text up or down to find the information that you need. 滚动;滚动浏览 e.g. Commit yourself to scrolling through thousands upon thousands upon thousands of Oxloves. 12.

teeter

v. Teeter is used in expressions such as teeter on the brink and teeter on the edge to emphasize that something seems to be in a very unstable situation or position. (强调情况)岌岌可危

rampant

adj. If you describe something bad, such as a crime or disease, as rampant, you mean that it is very common and is increasing in an uncontrolled way. 猖獗的; 泛滥的

salvage

v If something is salvaged, someone manages to save it, for example, from a ship that has sunk, or from a building that has been damaged. 抢救 (沉船或被毁楼房中的财物) e.g. In a world teetering with misery with pain with suffering, with rampant nationalism with climate change, there is something that we can hope for that we can salvage and that we can hold on to.
