Or in other words, take what the each Brit earns each year and spread that money between 20 people, that's how poor the average Indian is. Wealth gap means almost nothing. You should be looking at median real wages and standard of living for India instead. Example, US has sizable income equality but high median real wages and standard of living. The poor in the US are richer than much of the rest of the world.

I would think that this would factor in a lot. It’s one of those Factfulness quips where people outside India perceive it as a poor country with no market for leisure or gaming, when in reality it’s one of the biggest untapped markets due to its growing young population.

I've spent a decent amount of time studying India specifically. At a basic level it's simple: Indian gamers exist and want to play but don't spend money, primarily because they don't have it and secondarily because the mechanisms and habits aren't developed (people don't have credit cards, app store prices aren't tuned to their economic level, they aren't used to the idea of paying in-game). As a result, the value of the Indian market is less than developed countries a tenth of its size.
The interesting question is when Indian gamers will start spending money. In mobile, some do already. But on average the typical Indian gamer has little to no money to spend and may not even have a device that can run a game like PUBG Mobile -- extremely low end smartphones, made in India and sold for very low prices (like sub $100 or even half that) are a thing. You'll see game companies in India, that understand the issue, start to make more money over the coming years. But for India to be a "big" market could take 5-10 years.

The same thing happens with Latin America, half a continent, and we're 639 million people, but little to no industry caters to us because we just fucking LOVE pirating stuff, except for some obvious Football Games (FIFA, PES), and Online Gaming (Overwatch, CS:GO, LoL and Dota 2 seem to be the biggest ones. Also Fortnite and PUBG. At least in the past, private servers for MMORPGs like Lineage 2, Wow and such were rampant).
The biggest consoles down here were the PS2 and the 360 because of how easily they were hacked into, but MOST people play on PC, where you can pirate most games. It happens with movies and music too. Netflix has been the biggest exception to this rule, as is Spotify.

Netflix and Spotify have shown that if you offer media legally and conveniently at affordable prices people WILL pay for it. $60 USD for a game is too much for the average person in Latin America to pay. In Colombia where I'm from that is around a whole week's worth of work at minimum wage.

From what I've heard it's Brazil that has insane import taxes on electronics, anywhere from double to 10x the of the device cost itself.

I don't think there's a statistic for number of gaming devices, but if you just look at the number of people on the Internet (as a proxy for number of PCs and smartphones), the difference is staggering:

Answer to your question is, most Indian gamers have less spending power than Chinese gamers because playing video games is still considered as a casual hobby and Indian parents don't let their children play video games all day. Even if Indian gamers are interested in buying the particular game they won't be doing a recurring expenditure on the same thing (such as paid dlcs/ micro transactions/ battle pass etc). So either they go for a cheap alternative or adopt the piracy method. Also Indian gamers like 'free stuff' that's why PUBG Mobile is still going well in India. So if any game developing company is interested in entering the Indian market there are 2 words for you 'Mobile' & 'Free to play'. Sorry for my bad English.

Many reasons. The low penetration of internet (which is changing), love of piracy, and lack of knowing better (which is also changing), pricing point (as a lot of people mentioned, we don't have much disposable income), and most damning of all, the reluctance to recognise video games as a legitimate form of entertainment, on par with the movie industry. A lot of people as the common question,"what's the point of playing video games? Will it feed you?" with a straight face, but then turn around and welcome going to the movies, while not recognising the hypocrisy of that position.
India is more of a budding market, which will take some 5-10 years to fully develop, as attitudes change.

After going there and seeing it for myself, it makes perfect sense. India is poor. Like dirt poor. There are rich neighborhoods in richer cities, and these people play games. However, Indian people live in poverty. You could be above average if you make $1 an hour. Just think about that.
China is poor, but even the poorest of the poor people in china have smartphones. It's unbelievable. Somebody with a public service job that makes about $4 an hour has a brand new 6" smartphone - manufactured in China, which keeps the costs very low.
