1.  格雷格森警探的夜访调查

格雷格森：请问是夏庞蒂埃太太吗？

Gregson: Is this Madame Charpentier?

夏庞蒂埃：是的。

Madame Charpentier: Yes.

格雷格森：晚上好，夏庞蒂埃太太，我是伦敦警探格雷格森，这位是我的同事莱斯特雷德，你认识伊诺克·J. 德雷伯先生吗？

Gregson: Good evening, Madame Charpentier. I'm Scotland Yarder Gregson. This is my colleague Lestrade, do you know Mr. Enoch J. Drebber?

夏庞蒂埃：认识。

Charpentier: Yes,sir. I know him.

格雷格森：好的，我们进屋详谈吧。

Gregson: Okay, let's talk inside.

格雷格森：夏庞蒂埃太太，德雷伯先生今晚被发现死亡，我们通过他在帽店购买的帽子留下的地址找到这里，请问最近他一直住在这里吗？

Gregson: Mr. Drebber was found dead tonight, we found this place through the address left by the hat he bought in the hat store. Has he lived here recently?

Charpentier: Yes,sir.

Gregson:At what o’clock did Mr. Drebber leave your house？

夏庞蒂埃：八点整，他的秘书斯坦格森先生说有两趟火车，一趟九点一刻开，另一趟十一点开，他们打算赶头一趟。

Charpentier: At eight o’clock. His secretary, Mr. Stangerson, said that there were two trains—one at 9.15 and one at 11. He was to catch the first.

Gregson: Is this the last time you saw him?

夏庞蒂埃：是的 (杯子掉地上）

Charpentier: Yes.

夏庞蒂埃：真是抱歉，我来收拾一下这里

Charpentier: I'm so sorry,sir. Let me clean up here.

（在厨房）

女儿：妈妈，隐瞒真相不会有好下场，向这位先生坦白吧，我们后来又见过德雷伯先生

Daughter：No good can ever come of falsehood, mother. Let us be frank with this gentleman. We did see Mr. Drebber again.

夏庞蒂埃：你哥哥要死在你手里了！愿上帝宽恕你！

Charpentier: God forgive you! You have murdered your brother.

女儿：阿瑟肯定也希望我们讲真话。

Daughter：Arthur would rather that we spoke the truth

格雷格森：最好告诉我所有真相，话说一半比知情不报的情节更严重。再说，警方究竟掌握了多少情况，你们根本不知道。

Gregson: You had best tell me all about it now. Half-confidences are worse than none. Besides, you do not know how much we know of it.

夏庞蒂埃：先生，我通通告诉你。我之所以一提到儿子就着急不安，并不是怕他犯了命案。他绝对清白无辜，我是担心你和其他人怀疑他有罪，他是绝对不可能犯罪的。我儿子为人正直，有正当工作，没有任何前科，绝对不会做出伤天害理的事。

Charpentier: I will tell you all, sir. Do not imagine that my agitation on behalf of my son arises from any fear lest he should have had a hand in this terrible affair. He is utterly innocent of it. My dread is, however, that in your eyes and in the eyes of others he may appear to be compromised. That however is surely impossible. His high character, his profession, his antecedents would all forbid it.

格雷格森：想要证明他无罪，最好的办法就是实话实说，放心，如果你儿子真是清白无辜，没人会冤枉他。

Gregson: Your best way is to make a clean breast of the facts. Depend upon it, if your son is innocent he will be none the worse

夏庞蒂埃：我原本不想跟你讲实话，谁料可怜的女儿一句话捅破了真相，我别无选择。既然下定决心告诉你，我会毫无保留全说出来，决不隐瞒。

Charpentier: I had no intention of telling you all this. but since my poor daughter has disclosed it, I have no alternative. Having once decided to speak, I will tell you all without omitting any particular.

格雷格森：这才是最明智的决定。

Gregson: It is your wisest course

夏庞蒂埃：德雷伯先生和秘书斯坦格森先生一直在欧洲大陆旅行。我发现两人的箱子上都贴着哥本哈根的行李标签，应该是刚从哥本哈根来到伦敦。他们在我这儿住了差不多三个礼拜。斯坦格森不怎么说话，性格比较内向，待人彬彬有礼；可他的老板，恕我直言，完全是另一个模子倒出来的，脾气粗暴，举止龌龊。

Charpentier: Mr. Drebber and his secretary, Mr. Stangerson, had been travelling on the Continent. I noticed a “Copenhagen” label upon each of their trunks, showing that that had been their last stopping place. They has been with us nearly three weeks. He Stangerson was a quiet reserved man, but his employer, I am sorry to say, was far otherwise. He was coarse in his habits and brutish in his ways.

夏庞蒂埃：他喜欢对女仆们动手动脚，一点都不避讳。最恶心的是，这个下三烂的东西很快对艾丽斯放肆起来，三番几次说些轻浮又下流的话，幸亏我女儿年轻单纯，不懂话里的含义。今晚他闹得太离谱了，我忍无可忍，马上下了逐客令，这也是他们离开的原因。

Charpentier: His manners towards the maid-servants were disgustingly free and familiar. Worst of all, he speedily assumed the same attitude towards my daughter, Alice, and spoke to her more than once in a way which, fortunately, she is too innocent to understand. He's gone too far tonight, however, and I gave him notice to leave on account of it. That was the reason of his going.

夏庞蒂埃：看着他坐车走了，我总算松了口气。但不出一个钟头，有人按门铃，那个德雷伯先生又回来了。他兴奋得不得了，一看就喝了不少。当时，我和女儿正坐在房间里，他闯进屋里走到我们面前，竟然当着我的面要艾丽斯和他私奔。就在这时，儿子阿瑟走进房间。接下来发生的事，我就不太清楚了。我只听到咒骂声和扭打声，乱哄哄混成一团。我害怕得连头都不敢抬，等我抬起头时，看见阿瑟站在门口手里握着一根木棍，他拿起帽子，追上街去，我一直在家等着儿子，但等来的却是你们。

Charpentier: My heart grew light when I saw him drive away. But in less than an hour there was a ring at the bell, and I learned that Mr. Drebber had returned. He was much excited, and evidently the worse for drink. He forced his way into the room, where I was sitting with my daughter,

He proposed to Alice that she should fly with him before my very face. At that moment my son Arthur came into the room. What happened then I do not know. I heard oaths and the confused sounds of a scuffle. I was too terrified to raise my head.

When I did look up I saw Arthur standing in the doorway with a stick in his hand. he took his hat and started off down the street. I've been waiting at home for my son, then here you are

格雷格森：明白了，你儿子出门多久了？

Gregson: I see. How long has your son been out?

夏庞蒂埃：也许是两个小时，也许四五小时，先生，我很害怕，我真的记不清楚了。

Charpentier: Maybe two hours, maybe four or five, sir, I was scared, I really can't remember

格雷格森：没关系，夏庞蒂埃太太，你儿子还会回来的对吗？

Gregson: It's all right, Madame Charpentier, your son will come back, won't he?

夏庞蒂埃：是的，他是个好孩子，他从来没有夜不归宿过。

Charpentier: Yes, he's a good boy. He never stays out at night.

格雷格森：莱斯特雷德警探，夏庞蒂埃太太的儿子阿瑟有重大嫌疑，他不知道我们在这里，我们就在这里守着他回来吧。

Gregson: Detective Lestrade, Madame Charpentier's son Arthur is a serious suspect, he doesn't know we're here, so let's stay here and waiting for him to come back.

莱斯特雷德：就按你说的吧。

Lestrade：As you say.

格雷格森：请问是阿瑟么？

Gregson: Is this Arthur?

阿瑟：我是。

Arthur：I am

格雷格森：阿瑟，我们怀疑你跟一桩谋杀案有关联，请随我们走吧。

Gregson: Arthur, we suspect that you are involved in a murder case, please come with us

阿瑟：我猜你们来抓我，一定认为我跟德雷伯的死有关。

Arthur: I suppose you are arresting me for being concerned in the death of that scoundrel Drebber

莱斯特雷德：格雷格森，我觉得你太早下定论了。

Lestrade：Gregson, I think you're jumping to conclusions.

格雷格森：我知道你不相信我的能力，莱斯特雷德，但是这次你错了。

Gregson: I know you don't believe in my abilities, Lestrade. but this time you're wrong

莱斯特雷德：你对他作案过程有何高见？

Lestrade：What is your theory, then?

格雷格森：我是这么推断的：他跟着德雷伯到了布利克斯顿路，两人在那儿又吵得不可开交。争吵之间，德雷伯挨了一棍，可能正好击中心窝，所以他当场送了命却没留下伤痕。那天晚上大雨倾盆，周围一带没有行人，阿瑟顺利地把尸体拖进空屋。至于蜡烛、血迹、墙上的血字和戒指，通通都是他故意布下的圈套，无非是想给警方制造一点麻烦。

Gregson: Well, my theory is that he followed Drebber as far as the Brixton Road. When there, a fresh altercation arose between them, in the course of which Drebber received a blow from the stick, in the pit of the stomach, perhaps, which killed him without leaving any mark. The night was so wet that no one was about, so Arthur dragged the body of his victim into the empty house. As to the candle, and the blood, and the writing on the wall, and the ring, they may all be so many tricks to throw the police on to the wrong scent.

莱斯特雷德：我认为案件还有一个关键人物，德雷伯的秘书斯坦格森。我这有一条线索，晚上八点半左右，有人在尤斯顿车站看见他们两人在一起。凌晨两点，德雷伯死亡。作为德雷伯的秘书，他的嫌疑也很大。我去把他带回警局，一起审问。

Lestrade：I think there is another key figure in the case, Mr. Stangerson, Draper's secretary.

I have a lead here that the two of them were seen together at Euston Station at about 8.30pm. At 2 a.m. Draper died. As Draper's secretary, he is also a strong suspect. I'm going to take him back to the station and interrogate him together.

格雷格森：你自己去吧，这是白费力气，这个案子已经很明确了，阿瑟就是凶手。

Gregson: Go on your own, it's a waste of effort. The case is clear, Arthur is the killer.

莱斯特雷德：等着我的消息吧。

Lestrade：Wait for my message

2.  莱斯特雷德警探旅馆探案

服务员：早上好先生，我能帮你什么？

Waiter：Good morning, sir. How can I help you.

莱斯特雷德：早安，我是警探莱斯特雷德，请问有一个叫斯坦格森的人入住这里吗？

Lestrade：Good morning, this is Scotland Yarder Lestrade, is there a man called Stangerson staying here?

服务员：我需要些时间查查。你可以先享用这里的早餐

Waiter：I need some time to check.

服务员：先生，我们刚刚发现斯坦格森死了

Waiter：Sir, we have just found out that Mr. Stangerson is dead.

莱斯特雷德：什么时候的事情

Lestrade：When was it?

服务员：我刚刚上去发现斯坦格森先生房间门开着，里面有血迹，我进去看了下，发现斯坦格森先生身穿睡衣，整个身子蜷曲成一团。四肢僵硬冰冷，应该早就断了气，墙上还有血字RACHE

Waiter：I had just gone up and found the door to Mr. Stangerson's room open and there was blood inside. I went in and found Mr. Stengersen in his nightdress and all huddled up. He was quite dead, and had been for some time, for his limbs were rigid and cold.There is also blood writing letters 'RACHE' on the wall.

莱斯特雷德：这个案子越来越复杂了，你们有看到什么可疑人过来吗

Lestrade：This case is getting more and more complicated, have you seen any suspicious people coming?

服务员：让我想想，旅馆后面有条小巷，通向马车房，今天早上，我注意到平时横在地上的一架梯子竖了起来，对着三楼一扇敞开的窗户。我走过去以后，又回头看了一眼，正好看见一个男人从梯子上爬下来。那男人不声不响、不慌不忙，我以为是旅馆的木匠在干活，也就没怎么特别留意，只不过觉得这个时间开工未免太早了点。那男人高个、红脸，身穿棕色长大衣。

Waiter：Let me think. There is a lane which leads from the mews at the back of the hotel. This morning I noticed that a ladder, which usually lay there, was raised against one of the windows of the second floor, which was wide open.After passing, I looked back and saw a man descend the ladder. He came down so quietly and openly that the I imagined him to be some carpenter or joiner at work in the hotel.l took no particular notice of him, beyond thinking that it was early for him to be at work.The man was tall, had a reddish face, and was dressed in a long, brownish coat.

莱斯特雷德：早上？大概是几点？

Lestrade：In this morning? What time is it?

服务员：六点多吧

Waiter：about six o’clock.

莱斯特雷德：晚了一步，不过这么说来，凶手肯定不是阿瑟了，我还是去找福尔摩斯吧，这个错综复杂的案子，也许只有他能解开了。

Lestrade：One step too late, but the murder is definitely not Arthur anymore, I'd better go to Holmes. only he might be able to solve this intricate case.

3.  福尔摩斯解开谜团

福尔摩斯：早上好啊，莱斯特雷德警探，你终于来了。格雷格森警探在这里已经等你许久了。

Sherlock Holmes：Good morning, Detective Lestrade, you've finally arrived. Detective Gregson has been waiting for you here for a long time.

格雷格森：是的，我正在跟福尔摩斯先生说昨晚我们抓捕了凶手阿瑟呢，这个案子已经真相大白。

Gregson: Yes, I was telling Mr. Holmes that we caught the murderer last night and that the case had come to a head.

莱斯特雷德：格雷格森警探，你错了，今早六点左右，在哈利戴私人旅馆，斯坦格森先生被杀死了。

Lestrade：Gregson, you are wrong. Mr. Stangerson was killed at the Halliday Private Hotel at about six o'clock this morning.

福尔摩斯：我知道了，你在旅馆房间里有没有找到跟凶手有关的线索？

Sherlock Holmes：I see. Did you find nothing in the room which could furnish a clue to the murderer?

莱斯特雷德：都是些无关紧要的东西。床上有本小说，应该是死者的睡前读物。身旁的椅子上放着烟斗，桌上有杯水，窗台上有个木质小药盒，里面装着两粒药丸。

Lestrade：Nothing of any importance. The man’s novel, with which he had read himself to sleep was lying upon the bed, and his pipe was on a chair beside him. There was a glass of water on the table, and on the window-sill a small chip ointment box containing a couple of pills.

福尔摩斯：最后一环破解！大功告成！这团乱麻的根根线头，我已经捋得清清楚楚，当然，部分细节还有待补充，但是，所有重要环节都有十足把握。药盒里的两粒药丸，一粒无毒无害，另一粒含致命剧毒

Sherlock Holmes：The last link！My case is complete. I have now in my hands. all the threads which have formed such a tangle.There are, of course, details to be filled in, but I am as certain of all the main facts.Of the two pills in that box one was of the most deadly poison, and the other was entirely harmless.

格雷格森：请听我说，福尔摩斯先生，我们都承认你聪明能干，办起案来也有自己的套路。可眼下，不需要纸上谈兵，也不需要空洞理论，而是要捉拿凶手，破案才是硬道理。我调查到的情况已经告诉你们了，如此看来，我的推论站不住脚，阿瑟那小子不可能插手第二起谋杀。莱斯特雷德的追踪目标是斯坦格森，显然也是大错特错。你东扯一点，西拉一点，好像比我们还了解案情。事情到了这个节骨眼上，我们有权直截了当地问一句：你到底掌握了多少案情？能不能说出凶手是谁？

Gregson: Look here, Mr. Sherlock Holmes.We are all ready to acknowledge that you are a smart man, and that you have your own methods of working. We want something more than mere theory and preaching now, though. It is a case of taking the man. I have made my case out, and it seems I was wrong. Arthur could not have been engaged in this second affair. Lestrade went after his man, Stangerson, and it appears that he was wrong too. You have thrown out hints here, and hints there, and seem to know more than we do, but the time has come when we feel that we have a right to ask you straight how much you do know of the business. Can you name the man who did it?

莱斯特雷德：我不得不站在格雷格森这一边，先生，我们俩都尝试过了，也都败下阵来。自从我进了这屋子，你就不止一次说掌握了所有证据。事到如今，你就别再守口如瓶了。

Lestrade：I cannot help feeling that Gregson is right, sir. We have both tried, and we have both failed. You have remarked more than once since I have been in the room that you had all the evidence which you require. Surely you will not withhold it any longer.

Sherlock Holmes：The murder will soon be caught and hopefully everything will go as smoothly as I planned, we just have to wait. Patience, gentlemen, let's have a cup of tea.

Sherlock Holmes：Good boy. Just a minute, I need to get a pattern. Why don’t you introduce this pattern at Scotland Yard?. See how beautifully the spring works. They fasten in an instant

莱斯特雷德：不管是老款还是新款，只要能铐住凶手，就是好手铐

Lestrade：The old pattern is good enough.if we can only find the man to put them on.

福尔摩斯：说得好，请车夫上来帮忙搬行李箱吧

Sherlock Holmes：Very good. The cabman may as well help me with my boxes. Just ask him to step up.

小孩：好的，先生

Kiddo：Ok, sir.

福尔摩斯：车夫，请帮忙扣紧这个皮带锁扣。

Sherlock Holmes：Just give me a help with this buckle, cabman

（手铐扣上）

福尔摩斯：各位 。请允许我介绍一下，这位是杰弗逊·霍普先生，杀死德雷伯和斯坦格森的凶手。

Sherlock Holmes：Gentlemen.let me introduce you to Mr. Jefferson Hope, the murderer of Enoch Drebber and of Joseph Stangerson.

Lestrade：Go get him.
