Emily Goldberg
I think I might go home tomorrow
Tim Bergling
:(
Emily Goldberg
Babe, ever since we had that
talk I’ve started to notice how
uninterested you are, how ur
really tired and how your focus is
100% studio, in and out of it, and
I just get sad being around you
when I can tell ur not interested in me anymore
Tim Bergling
I am.
Emily Goldberg
and I was prepared for the studio
to be 100 percent ur main focus but
I wasn’t prepared for u not to be
attracted to me
Tim Bergling
I mean I can’t talk abt this now
There was nothing wrong with the surroundings; on the contrary. Emily liked the coolness and shadows of Tanager Way. There were many rooms, the ceilings high. The best part was the two toilets connected by an elongated, shared bathroom. Finally, there was some personal space and mysticism after all the months on the tour bus and in hotel rooms.
But Emily Goldberg did not feel good in the late winter of 2013. She had begun to feel that she worked for Avicii rather than being Tim’s girlfriend. When the guys over in Stockholm couldn’t get hold of Tim – and they very rarely could right now – they chased her instead. Emails and text messages and phone calls that Emily could not sift through at all. In the flood of commitments, what was important and what could be opted out of? How could she judge that? Everything in Tim’s world felt unbelievably important.
And while her boyfriend was making his big debut album, she had become almost completely insignificant, so it felt.
Tim sat in the studio all day, rarely coming home before three in the morning. He woke up late in the afternoon and immediately got into an Uber and drove back to Santa Monica.
He took more and more pills. Apparently, he had quickly developed a level of tolerance for the medicine he had started taking a year earlier. By now he needed extra pills to achieve the same effect of relaxation and relief as before.
That seemed to be what he needed to ease the pain.
In addition to the album, Tim would this spring make an advertising collaboration with the Swedish telecom company Ericsson. He had written a short chord progression to start from, then the idea was that fans from around the world would send in bass lines and drumbeats and effects that would be put together piece by piece into a single song. Ericsson wanted to demonstrate that their infrastructure made it possible for the whole world to be connected. At Night would be visible on thousands of people’s social media: vote for my drums, my break, my effects!
Emily had learned Tim’s pattern by now. When he was asked, he almost always thought that such a commitment was cool – he also wanted his music to be as widespread as possible. The assignment was often six months ahead of time and was still abstract enough for him to say yes.
When it later came to the actual implementation, it became more difficult. The commitments piled up the closer Tim got to them, until even basic things felt insurmountable. An email became impossible to answer, a phone call turned into the world’s highest mountain.
The collaboration with Ericsson seemed to feel just like that for him. A couple of unfortunate Swedish advertisers had flown to Los Angeles to produce a film about the project – they wanted to follow Tim’s work in the studio and do some short interviews. Tim avoided them like the plague.
More and more often, Emily Goldberg felt that she too had become a burden on her boyfriend, something he needed to tick off the to-do list. They never ate together any more. If Tim had anything at all, it was tacos or pizza, just what the doctors had advised against, before he sat down in front of the computer again.
Despite the intensive work on the record, the touring would continue. In mid-February 2013, Tim flew to Argentina, to where Ultra Music Festival had now expanded.
For a while now, there had been a couple of important staff additions to the road crew.
One of the new employees was Harry Bird, a young Brit who was behind large parts of Swedish House Mafia’s visual expression. His company Comix produced evocative film sequences that would make the audience feel Avicii’s songs even more in their stomachs. On huge screens behind Tim, animated flames of fire, flashing cobwebs and winding tunnels now rolled. Harry himself stood in the so-called front of house, an enclosed section in the middle of the audience from where the sound was handled, and in real time matched up the various film clips with the songs that Tim was playing.
Also on the tour was the new production manager Charlie Alves, a big and blunt guy from Chicago who had toured with the performance group Blue Man Group and the crooner Michael Bublé. He ran around the huge lighting rigs and stage constructions and shouted in his headset, making sure that everyone in the production played together.
They were both welcome new acquisitions – Tim and Harry had quickly realised that they both loved The Office and developed a secret language based on facial expressions borrowed from Ricky Gervais’s cocky boss character in the series. Charlie had been nicknamed Sergeant Bilko, after the talkative military commander in the 90s movie of the same name.
Forty thousand South Americans were watching Avicii bounce in the booth, illuminated by pyro and strobe light.
When Tim stepped off the stage, he was dripping with sweat, the adrenalin rushed through him. The tension of standing alone in front of so many people was impossible to get used to. When they got back to the hotel, he turned to production manager Charlie Alves.
‘I don’t wanna go to bed.’
‘What you up to?’
‘I’m gonna come by your room and we’re gonna raid your minibar.’
Tim ignored the doctors’ warnings. Sure, sometimes when he drank alcohol the stomach pains crept in again, but what the hell? He was twenty-three years old, when else would he be allowed to go and wind down if not after a gig in front of forty thousand people?
As the sun rose over Buenos Aires, they sat on the balcony of Charlie’s room, opening small bottles of spirits and wine and talking about life and the universe. When the minibar was empty, they ordered champagne and, eight hours later, the lunch rush could be heard down the street.
Then it was off to Spain. At a gathering for the telecom industry, the song that had been made together with the fans would be presented. Filip Holm and Marcus Lindgren had sat on Styrmansgatan through the nights and listened to thirteen thousand entries, one bass line worse than the next. Since the components came separately, it had proved impossible to get a feel for how the pieces of the puzzle would sound together and, in the end, it had still been Tim who’d had to paste everything together into somewhat of a song. Nonetheless, it was now called ‘Avicii X You’.
In front of the suits in Barcelona, Tim was interviewed by Ericsson’s CEO Hans Vestberg, before they went and ate together with Arash, Per Sundin from Universal, and a sales manager at Ericsson.
Per Sundin was a little surprised that Tim had red wine with his meal – he had heard that Tim wasn’t drinking any more – but didn’t want to protest.
The next day, 27 February 2013, the plane took off for the Future Music Festival in Australia.
