J’ai faille attendre

        据坊间的野史，有一次,路易十四的一个朝臣恰好在约定的时间（一分不早，一分不迟）来觐见圣上，太阳王看见大臣来了，就对他说道：“Monsieur, j’ai failli attendre.”

        Legend has it that Louis XIV saw one of his courtiers (un de ses courtisans) arriving at the court exactly at the appointed hour, and said to him: “Monsieur, j’ai failli attendre.”

        “J'ai failli attendre”? 学过英语的童鞋可能会理解成英语的“I failed to wait.”——“我没能等成”？”我等了又等，可还是没等来“？

        都不对啦。太阳王是在说：“爱卿，你险些害朕等你。”（清宫戏看太多了！^v^）

        "Faillir" is not "to fail" (subir un échec, échouer), but almost to do something (but not quite)。法语的"faillir 动词" 意为“差点儿, 险些” 做某事（但实际上并没有做）。这些事通常是“不好的事”，或者“不希望发生的事”。如：上例中的 “attendre”.

看几个例子：

Il a failli tomber.
He almost fell.
他差点儿摔倒。

J'ai eu la grippe la semaine passée, et j'ai failli en mourir.
I had the flu last week, and it almost killed me!
上周我得了流感, 差点死了!

J’ai failli manquer le train.
I almost missed the train.
我差点儿误了火车。

       最后一个例子，如果一定要用"fail", 如何翻成英文呢？

I almost failed to catch the train. (But thank God I made it! ^v^)

        而英语的"fail"要做的事，通常是“要达成的目标”或者“希望发生的事”总之是“好事”，翻成法语要说 “échouer, subir un échec”, etc.。

看几个例子：

The plan failed because they ran out of money.
Le plan a échoué à cause du manque d'argent.
因为缺钱，计划失败了。

Bobby failed the exam.
Bobby a raté ses examens.
鲍勃考试不及格。

They failed to deliver the package in time.
Il n'a pas réussi à livrer le colis à temps.
包裹没能及时送达。
