The Lesson 一堂课

A son took his father to a restaurant for an evening dinner.

儿子带他的父亲去餐馆吃晚餐。

The father, being very old and weak, while he was eating, dropped food on his shirt and pants.

父亲年事已高，身体也很虚弱，吃饭的时候，把食物洒在了衬衫和裤子上。

Other diners watched him with dislike while his son was calm and enjoyed the time with his dad.

其他用餐者不悦地看着他，而他的儿子却很平静，享受着和父亲在一起的时光。

After they finished eating, the son quietly took his father to the washroom, wiped off the food, combed his hair and fitted his glasses firmly.

吃完饭后，儿子悄悄地把父亲带到盥洗室，帮父亲把食物揩去，梳好头，把眼镜戴好。

When they came back out, the entire restaurant was watching them in silence, not able to grasp how someone could embarrass themselves publicly like that.

当他们出来的时候，整个餐厅都在默默地看着他们，无法理解为什么有人会这样公开地让自己难堪。

The son settled the bill and started leaving with his father.

儿子付了帐，正要和父亲一起离开。

At that time, an old man sitting among the diners called out to the son and asked him, "Don't you think that you have left something behind?"

这时，坐在用餐者中间的一位老人向儿子喊道：“难道你不觉得你落下什么东西了吗？”

The son replied, "No sir, I haven't."

儿子回答说：“没，先生，没有。”

The old man retorted, "Yes, you have! You have left a lesson for every son and a hope for every father."

老人反驳说：“有，你有！你给每个儿子上了一堂课，给每个父亲留下了希望。”

The restaurant was silent.

餐馆里鸦雀无声。
