I'm coming forward about this (after being given the go ahead by multiple people).
I'm tired of being mistreated behind the scenes, and I am tired of watching my friends being mistreated behind the scenes, by SilverSlippedVA (Gabe Linan.) I could make a burner but I have no intention of hiding my opinion- and after today I have no intention of being associated with him or with his work. I am discontinuing my Mandela Art and my work in the community if it has anything to do with the character he plays.
I want to preface this by saying it is entirely within my right to talk about this as all of this has become my business after being messaged about it by fans- and it all happened in front of me, or to my face in DMs.
To summarize, Gabe set his PFP as an image of a character from the show “The Community” sporting a dark elf cosplay- but also wearing blackface to go through with it. The episode was banned from all platforms BECAUSE the joke was about blackface.
Gabe is aware of his platform- and decided to change his PFP to that character because he found it “funny” after being dared by another VA, FruitMasseuse, to do it. I confronted Gabe about this in voice chat, and he said he had no idea it would be taken as blackface or that it could even resemble that sort of joke. However, the entire scene with that character CENTERS around the blackface joke, with even another character shouting “ITS BLACKFACE” at him. It’s obvious that the “joke” is double layered. Essentially, Gabe lied to me. He also should have known it was offensive as he had to go out of his way to find the episode on other platforms, seeing as it had been banned from Netflix for being offensive. The fact it was also a dare proves the point he knew of its mal intent- seeing as if the image were not as controversial or “funny” to them, it wouldn’t have been done at all.
Gabe continued to lie, as he said messaging him in a discord DM (I will not show screenshots unless Dm’d) wasn’t the reason he apologized and took down the PFP after it was up for half a day. He said he had woken up to my Dm and came to realize the gravity of the situation from there on, as well as the mal intent of the “joke” itself- however, he had sent a message in a group chat with other VA’s two hours beforehand, the message even being an explanation of what the joke was. Gabe has lied and only held himself accountable on other occasions when I am the one to try and help him- for example, when a fan fell into a depression after he blatantly bullied them on multiple platforms (past the point of a joke) it took me DM’ing him to get him to apologize to that fan at all.
Gabe, behind the scenes, continued to create problems for multiple people- both crew and friends- and it has come to the point that he must be held accountable for it. I’m upset seeing people in his apology’s responses saying “he didn’t know any better” or “he didn’t know it would be offensive”- because that isn’t true. He has lied to his audience about his intent and his awareness of the situation, and I am tired of watching it happen.
I am angry because he has dragged me, coworkers, and friends through the mud for this “joke” and hurt many fans- his blatantly ignorant actions have led to undeniable and unneeded stress and pain. Someone needed to say something, so here’s the explanation.
