关于“frais / fresh”这一对同源词，首先要说明三点：

1、法语的“frais”和英语的“fresh”都来自古日耳曼语，原意是“新鲜的，不含盐的”。
2、作“费用”解的“frais”（fees）与作“新鲜”讲的“frais”不是同源词。
3、法语的 “fraise”(草莓) 与“frais”(新鲜)不是同源词：它们没有关系啦。

法语的“frais”和英语的“fresh”都保留了“新鲜”的意思，常可以互译，例如：

Mes enfants adorent le pain frais.
My children love fresh bread.
我的孩子们喜欢新鲜面包。

Tu devrais manger plus de fruits (légumes) frais et moins de conserves.
You should eat more fresh fruit (vegetables) and less canned food.
你该多吃新鲜水果（蔬菜）少吃罐头食品。

但法语的“frais”还有“凉爽, 凉快”的意思，常译为英语的“cool, chilly”等，例如：

Nous cherchions un endroit frais pour pique-niquer.
We were looking for a cool place to have a picnic.
我们想找个荫凉好吃野餐。

C’est agréable, ce petit vent frais.
This cool breeze is rather nice.
阵阵凉风，可真爽呀。

在谈到饮料时，法语的“frais”意为“冰镇的”。所以，在饭馆里吃饭时，如要喝“冰水”（chilled water），就要说“de l’eau fraîche”，而加冰块的水则是“l’eau glacée”（^v^）：

Il faudrait prévoir des boissons fraîches.  Il va faire chaud.
It’s going to be hot.  We must get in a supply of cold drinks.
天会很热。该准备点冷饮。

Je donnerais n’importe quoi pour une bière bien fraîche.
I’d give anything for a nice cool /cold beer.
我愿意付出任何代价换取一杯冰镇啤酒。

法语的“frais”也有“轻寒, 微冷”的意思:

Mets ton manteau.  Il fait frais ce matin.
Put your coat on.  It’s a bit chilly this morning.
穿上外套。今早有点冷。

法语的“frais”还有“冷淡，不友好”的意思，也可译为英语的“cool, chilly”等，例如：

Nous avons reçu un accueil très frais.
We received a very cool /chilly welcome.
我们遭到了冷遇。

Les relations entre ces deux pays sont plutôt fraîches.
The relations between the two countries are rather cool /chilly.
两个国家之间的关系很僵（不友好）。

同样的意思也可以用法语副词“fraîchement”表示：

Le ministre a été accueilli assez fraîchement par la population rurale.
The minister was given a rather cool reception by the rural population.
部长在乡下并不受当地人的欢迎。

另一方面，英语的“fresh”除了“新鲜”的意思之外，还有“刚发生的，新来的”等意思：

Whenever a fresh government crisis hits the headlines, they all start clamouring for a new policy.
A chaque nouvelle crise gouvernementale, ils réclament tous un changement de politique.
每当发生新的政府危机，他们就要求改变政策。

Our new maths teacher is fresh from university.
Notre nouveau professeur de mathématiques est frais émoulu de l’université.
我们的新数学老师刚从大学毕业。

另外，英语的“fresh water”是“淡水”的意思, 一般译为法语的“eau douce /potable”：

Trout lives in fresh water.
Les truites vivent en eau douce.
鳟鱼生活在淡水里。
